Tommy Hilfiger tracks, rewards you for wearing its smart clothes

Image
How do you convince everyday people to serve as unofficial ambassadors for a fashion brand? Make smart clothes, apparently. Tommy Hilfiger is launching a Tommy Jeans Xplore garment line that uses embedded Bluetooth smart tags (connected to the company's iOS app) to provide "one-of-a-kind rewards and experiences" to buyers. The more you wear the clothes, the more points you earn -- basically, you're getting a handful of perks for becoming a walking billboard. The Xplore line includes men's, women's and unisex clothes, and is available "exclusively" in the US through both Tommy Hilfiger's website and its 5th Avenue flagship store in New York City. There are numerous questions about the Xplore program, most notably including privacy. How much data do the tags and app send to Tommy Hilfiger, for example? And how much control do y

Cisco UCS PowerTools and PowerShell

Image
Cisco UCS PowerTools and PowerShell As I mentioned in a previous post, we are upgrading our infrastructure and we are using Dell EMC VxBlock.  So far this upgrade is going fairly smooth, but we are still at the very beginning of the process.  So once I found out that the VxBlock was configured to contain UCS hardware, I began looking to see what Cisco had to offer for PowerShell modules to help manage the new hardware that we are getting. … Continue reading The post Cisco UCS PowerTools and PowerShell appeared first on Notes of a scripter . via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2AkyqJt If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr

Epic quickly nerfs the new 'Fortnite' SMG after complaints

Image
The v5.10 Fortnite update that brought back our beloved Playground mode also added something else -- this new gun. Unfortunately, the "high capacity, fast firing Compact SMG" was just a little too overpowered, and many high-profile players quickly complained that it made the game a race to get the SMG so one could chew through their enemies (and their buildings, as the starting and max health of many materials dropped at the same time). While Epic has been up front about wanting to make the endgame more exciting and less focused on build-offs as it pushes for esports viability , this particular tweak may have gone too far. As a result, the company quickly lowered the accuracy, range and damage done by the new gun and existing SMGs. Check below for the (now-live) adjusted SMG values, and a few clips of the gun at work as it existed prior to the nerf.

Study backs blood test that gauges seriousness of concussions

Image
Remember how the FDA approved a blood test that could determine the severity of a concussion ? It's now clear just why the FDA gave its approval. The Lancet Neurology has published the study at the heart of the decision, giving you a chance to verify the claims for yourself (if you're willing to pay, at least). As before, Banyan Biomarkers ' test checks for the presence of two brain proteins (GFAP and UCH-L1) whose levels rise when there are signs of internal trauma. The FDA's claims check out -- out of 1,959 eligible test subjects, just three had CT scans turn up results when the blood tests were negative. So long as the test performs similarly well in the real world, it could have a significant impact on medicine. Until now, the decision to perform a CT scan has usually relied on external symptom checks, such as reports of headaches or nausea

Philip K. Dick’s ‘The Great C’ is coming to VR

Image
A VR adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story "The Great C" is headed to the Venice Film Festival, Variety reports. First published in 1953, the story centers on a human tribe living in a post-apocalyptic world set in the future. Each year, the tribe must send a human sacrifice to a computer called the Great C that rules the world. In the VR adaptation, created by Secret Location , a woman named Clare grapples with whether to accept the tradition and let her fiancé be sacrificed or take a stand against the cruelty. "Philip K. Dick's wonderfully forward-thinking stories have always felt primed for telling in equally forward-thinking mediums," Secret Location co-founder Ryan Andal said in a statement. "Pairing 'The Great C's' provocative themes with our VR development prowess is helping us redefine how we consume sci-fi sto

Samsung's 'unbreakable' display survives UL scrutiny

Image
When Samsung Display unveiled a seemingly invulnerable AMOLED screen in 2017, there was good reason for skepticism. Could you really stretch, squeeze and bash it as much as Samsung claimed? Apparently, the answer is yes. Underwriters Laboratories certified an "unbreakable" panel from the company as capable of surviving military-grade durability tests without damage. This included dropping it 26 times from a height of four feet and subjecting it to extreme temperatures. It even survived a drop test at 6 feet without any battle scars. The key to its endurance is a flexible design with an unbreakable substrate and an overlay window that adheres "securely" to the panel. There have been flexible displays on the market for years (the Apple Watch uses one, for example), but they tend to use glass covers that partly defeat the point -- what good is an in

Ada Lovelace manuscript and algorithm fetch $125,000 at auction

Image
A manuscript written by Ada Lovelace , who's considered by many to be the first computer programmer, was just sold at auction for more than $125,000, the Guardian reports. A first edition and just one of six known copies of the book, it contains Lovelace's translation of a paper written by Italian mathematician Luigi Menabrea that describes Charles Ba bbage's plans for his "Analytical Engine" computing machine. The manuscript also contains copious explanatory notes and observations from Lovelace as well as a formula for calculating Bernoulli numbers that has been called the world's first computer program. Lovelace was the daughter of Lord Byron and her interest and aptitude for mathematics led to a years-long friendship and intellectual partnership with inventor Charles Babbage. "Until recently, her story of mathematical excellence was

Qualcomm: Apple's next iPhones won't use our wireless chips

Image
You might see the practical impact of the Apple-Qualcomm royalty feud in the very near future. As part of an earnings call , Qualcomm financial chief George Davis told investors that his company believed Apple would "solely use our competitor's modems" (read: Intel's ) in the next iPhones . Given that Qualcomm would know whether or not Apple was a customer this close to an iPhone launch (new models usually appear in September), it's safe to say tha t the chip maker has been shut out this time around. It's not shocking that Apple would drop Qualcomm like a hot potato. There was word that Apple was designing Qualcomm-free iPhones back in October 2017 , and relations haven't exactly warmed up since then with more lawsuits on both sides in addition to antitrust measures . It wouldn't be surprising for Apple to go Intel-only for wireles

The ABCs of Hacking a Voting Machine

A hacker who successfully infiltrated a voting machine at last year's DEF CON will demonstrate at Black Hat USA how he did it, as well as what he later found stored on other decommissioned WinVote machines. via Dark Reading: https://ift.tt/2uO4ZtW If New feed item from http://www.darkreading.com/rss/all.xml , then send
