Machine Learning vs. Deep Learning in Cybersecurity – Demystifying AI’s Siblings

Image
Beginning in the 1950s, artificial intelligence (AI) was used as an umbrella term for all methods and disciples that result in any form of intelligence exhibited by machines. Today, nearly all software in every industry – especially in security – use at least some form of AI, even if it is limited to basic manually coded procedures. ESG research found that 12 percent of enterprise organizations have already deployed AI-based security analytics extensively, and 27 percent have deployed AI-based security analytics on a limited basis. It is expected that these implementation trends will only gain momentum in 2018. During the past few years, the major subsets of AI – machine learning and deep learning – have progressed, transforming nearly every field they touch. Nowadays the terms "artificial intelligence, "machine learning," and "deep learning" are used wide

Bob Ross can mellow you out through a mobile app

Image
Be honest: if you've watched Bob Ross' The Joy of Painting , it was probably more for his ultra-relaxing voice than his artistic advice. More than a few people have admitted to nodding off to his episodes. If so, you'll be glad to hear that his dulcet tones are available on-demand through your phone. Calm has released an officially approved Bob Ross Sleep Story recording for its mobile app (simply titled Painting With Bob Ross ) that, as you might guess, uses snippets from the artist's PBS show to help your slumber. You no longer have to leave a YouTube video open or find a way to grab the raw audio. The company is well aware of why you're listening and made sure to include the brush strokes, knife scraping and palette dabs that send tingles down your spine. Naturally, you'll also find the universal bits of wisdom Ross would string througho

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Red Cloudbow over Delaware

Image
Red Cloudbow over Delaware What kind of rainbow is this? In this case, no rain was involved -- what is pictured is actually a red cloudbow . The unusual sky arc was spotted last month during sunset in Rehoboth Beach , Delaware , USA . When the photographer realized that what he was seeing was extraordinary, he captured it with the only camera available -- a cell phone. Clouds are made of water droplets, and in a cloudbow a cloud-droplet group reflects back light from the bright Sun (or Moon) on the opposite side of the sky. Similar phenomena include fogbows and airplane glories . Here, the red color was caused by atmospheric air preferentially scattering away blue light -- which simultaneously makes most of the sky appear blue . A careful inspection reveals a supernumery bow just inside the outermost arc, a bow caused by quantum diffraction . June 13, 2018 via NASA https://ift.t

Seattle quickly repeals 'head tax' that Amazon opposed

Image
Just a few weeks after enacting a so-called "head tax" Seattle's City Council voted 7-2 to repeal it. It would have charged big businesses around $500 for each of their full-time employees in order to fund affordable housing and services for the homeless, but facing opposition from corporations like Amazon, local politicians blinked. According to GeekWire , Councilwoman Lisa Herbold said the repeal vote happened because "This is not a winnable battle." Amazon had paused work on a new HQ in the city after the original proposal came up, but resumed construction after a compromise dropped the fee to $275 per employee. Forces against the levy (including Amazon and Starbucks) were funding a "No Tax on Jobs" campaign to put its fate on the ballot in November, and the Council believed it did not have the resources to win. In a statement, Am

AI detects movement through walls using wireless signals

Image
You don't need exotic radar , infrared or elaborate mesh networks to spot people through walls -- all you need are some easily detectable wireless signals and a dash of AI. Researchers at MIT CSAIL have developed a system (RF-Pose) that uses a neural network to teach RF-equipped devices to sense people's movement and postures behind obstacles. The team trained their AI to recognize human motion in RF by showing it examples of both on-camera movement and signals reflected from people's bodies, helping it understand how the reflections correlate to a given posture. From there, the AI could use wireless alone to estimate someone's movements and represent them using stick figures. The scientists mainly see their invention as useful for health care, where it could be used to track the development of diseases like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's .

Epic lines up its first 'Fortnite' World Cup for late 2019

Image
During a break before the prize round of its star-studded Fortnite Pro-Am tournament at E3 2018, Epic Games announced some information about the first Fortnite World Cup . As a cap for the 2018-2019 competitive season where it's dishing out $100 million in prizes across various tourn aments, the 2019 Fortnite World Cup will begin with qualifier events that take place worldwide later this year, where the company says anyone can play and win. Details on a Code of Conduct, platform info and schedule are still TBA, but what we do know is that while there will be some squad competition, the World Cup's focus is on Solo and Duo play. Also, traditional eSports powerhouses may take a backseat, as Epic announced that unlike some other competitions it will not sell teams or franchises and that it won't allow third-party tournaments to do so either. While you wait fo

Facebook will stream some Big3 basketball games this season

Image
Fans of Big3 will get to watch nine games for free this season as Fox Sports announced today that one game per each regular season week will air exclusively on Facebook Watch. Every week, one game will stream on Facebook and then three additional games will air on FOX or FS1. "As a start-up professional sports league, we have an innate flexibility that allows us to adapt and cater to our growing audience," co-CEO Jeff Kwatinetz said in a statement . "Given that our fans had an average age of more than 10 years younger than typical basketball fans, we want to provide digital viewing experiences so they can engage with our league in a format that best suits their viewing preferences." The Big3 league, co-founded by Ice Cube, launched last year and features three-on-three matchups of teams populated mostly by retired NBA players. The games are played

Byton's second EV is an autonomous sedan due in 2021

Image
Byton has yet to deliver a single vehicle, but that isn't stopping it from promising more electric cars. As teased in April , the fledgling automaker has unveiled its second EV, the K-Byte Concept sedan. It shares the same platform as the SUV we saw at CES (now called the M-Byte Concept) and, to no one's surprise, is designed with autonomous driving in mind. It'll include a retractable LiDAR system that kicks in during full self-driving scenarios and retracts when space is at a priority, such as wh en you're parking. The company is aiming for Level 4 autonomy where it can drive all by itself without human input, but only in specific situations. There's no mention of the interior, though we'd expect it to be laden with touchscreen tech like the M-Byte. It'll be difficult to escape the technology on the outside, at least. In addition
