Blockchain company Tron buys BitTorrent

Image
A blockchain startup called Tron has closed its deal to buy the file-sharing service BitTorrent . Neither side disclosed how much Tron paid, but TechCrunch reports the price was around $126 million in cash. BitTorrent's staff will work out of Tron's San Francisco office. Tron founder Justin Sun says the deal makes his firm the "largest decentralized Internet ecosystem in the world." BitTorrent said in a statement last month it " has no plans to change what we do or charge for the services we provide. We have no plans to enable mining of cryptocurrency now or in the future." But it's not clear if Tron has different plans, such as prompting its new userbase to start mining its TRX cryptocurrency. One thing's for sure: the BitTorrent and uTorrent clients are not going away, nor should its more than 100 million active users have t

Nikon announces full-frame mirrorless camera system under development

Image
After years of rumors, Nikon has finally confirmed that it's working on an all-new mirrorless camera system based around a full-frame image sensor. The company has given very few details, but we know the system will use a new lens mount and thus require new lenses, though an adapter for F-mount SLR lenses will also be available. (It's unclear whether this will offer features like autofocus.) This will be Nikon's second line of mirrorless cameras after the Nikon 1 series, which launched in 2011 and was recently discontinued . Nikon 1 used small 1-inch sensors and unconventional controls, with an anemic lens range that mostly consisted of slow zooms, meaning image quality was usually closer to a point-and-shoot than a DSLR. There was an... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2mEtMfk

Astronomy Picture of the Day: The Edge On Spindle Galaxy

Image
The Edge On Spindle Galaxy What kind of celestial object is this? A relatively normal galaxy -- but seen from its edge. Many disk galaxies are actually just as thin as NGC 5866, pictured here , but are not seen edge-on from our vantage point. A perhaps more familiar galaxy seen edge-on is our own Milky Way Galaxy . Cataloged as M102 and NGC 5866, the Spindle galaxy has numerous and complex dust lanes appearing dark and red, while many of the bright stars in the disk give it a more blue underlying hue. The blue disk of young stars can be seen extending past the dust in the extremely thin galactic plane. There is evidence that the Sp indle galaxy has cannibalized smaller galaxies over the past billion years or so, including multiple streams of faint stars, dark dust that extends away from the main galactic plane, and a surrounding group of galaxies (not shown). In general, many dis

Nikon confirms new full-frame FX mirrorless cameras and lens mount

It's official: Nikon will soon launch a full-frame mirrorless camera system with a brand a new lens mount. In a press release , it announced that it's developing a "next-generation full-frame (Nikon FX-format) mirrorless camera and Nikkor lenses, featuring a new mount," adding that "professional creators around the world have contributed to the development." As expected, it's also working on an adapter that will let you use e xisting full-frame Nikon F-Mount DSLR lenses with the cameras. Nikon hinted that the new mount would allow it to make the lenses and cameras slimmer and smaller. "The new mirrorless camera and Nikkor lenses that are in development will enable a new dimension in optical performance with the adoption of a new mount," says the press release. Nikon is just confirming what we already strongly suspecte

Watch the Google Cloud Next keynote in under 13 minutes

Image
With the Google Next 2018 conference -- the I/O for cloud computing -- now underway in San Francisco, the company spent some time Tuesday morning crowing over its most recent cloud-based accomplishments and explaining where the platform will be expanding in the future. Diane Greene, CEO of Google Cloud, took the stage to announce that this year's conference is the "biggest Google event ever" with more than 20,000 registered attendees. AI and security were the two main points of focus for Google Cloud moving forward or as Greene put it, "Security is the number one worry, and AI is the number one opportunity." She hinted that nearly a dozen new security features and tools will debut at the conference this week, in addition to the twenty announced back in March . AI will play an important role in that space. It's already being used to

Sega is releasing a 'Phantasy Star' mobile game in Japan

Image
Phantasy Star is a popular Sega RPG franchise that spawned numerous titles; it was Sega's answer to the Final Fantasy series. Now, for the franchise's 30th anniversary, Sega has announced a new mobile smartphone game called Idola: Phantasy Star Saga will arrive in Japan later this year. While there aren't many details in terms of gameplay, Polygon reports that the game will be turn based and will use a gacha system for unlocking characters. The story follows Stella, who is the leader of the Aries Knights, which fights Idola monsters. More details will likely emerge as the release date nears. It's not the most promising development for a well-loved franchise. There have been high hopes for more Phantasy Star title releases in the US and Europe. It's not clear whether this latest release will make its way to the other side of the world, but f

Twitter will lock your account if you change your display name to Elon Musk

Image
Twitter has implemented a new method for combating cryptocurrency scammers: it now automatically locks unverified accounts that change their display name to Elon Musk. If you have a non-verified account that is not associated with a phone number, changing your display name to that of the SpaceX and Tesla CEO will result in an immediate lock out. Twitter will then ask you to pass a CAPTCHA test, as well as provide a phone number, to regain access. "As part of our continuing efforts to combat spam and malicious activity on our service, we're testing new measures to challenge accounts that use terms commonly associated with spam campaigns. We are continually refining these detections based on changes in spammy activity," a Twitter... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2O9tObT

Facebook deal with Washington ends ad filtering for ethnicity

Image
Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced today that Facebook has signed an agreement that will prevent advertisers promoting housing, credit, employment, insurance or businesses open to the public from excluding individuals from seeing their ads based on that person's race, creed, color, national origin, veteran or military status, sexual orientation or disability status. The agreement concludes a 20-month investigation conducted by the state's attorney general's office. While the de al makes these changes legally binding in the state of Washington, Facebook already implemented them broadly back in April. "In response to the feedback we've received, we've removed thousands of categories from exclusion targeting," Facebook said in an April announcement . "We focused mainly on topics that relate to potentially sensitive pers

DirecTV Now helped AT&T turn around its shrinking video business

Image
It's been clear for a while that DirecTV Now is keeping AT&T's TV subscriber numbers in the black , but it's now apparent just how much it's turning around its once-ailing video services. The telecom has posted second quarter earnings revealing that DirecTV Now added 342,000 subscribers in the spring, turning last year's 199,000-subscriber loss for AT&T's Entertainment Group into an 80,000-us er gain. The telecom isn't shy about what that means -- its video customer base was "stable" thanks to internet viewership. The growth helped DirecTV Now reach 1.8 million total customers -- about a million more than it had at the end of summer 2017. AT&T only just launched its low-cost WatchTV service at the very tail end of the quarter, so it didn't have enough time to provide a meaningful result. Internet viewers s
