Understanding vSAN Encryption – “Erase disks before use”

Image
A few questions routinely come up when using "Erase disks before use" with vSAN Encryption.   What occurs when "Erase disks before use" is used? When a vSAN cluster has this setting checked, random data is written to each device in a disk group before it is encrypted. Why random data? Astronomy Picture of the Day: Moon and Venus over Cannon Beach

Image
Moon and Venus over Cannon Beach What's that spot next to the Moon? Venus . Two days ago, the crescent Moon slowly drifted past Venus, appearing within just two degrees at its closest. This conjunction , though, was just one of several photographic adventures for our Moon this month ( moon-th ), because, for one, a partial solar eclipse occurred just a few days before , on July 12. Currently, the Moon appears to be brightening, as seen from the Earth, as the fraction of its face illuminated by the Sun continues to increase. In a few days, the Moon will appear more than half full, and therefore be in its gibbous phase . Next week the face of the Moon that always faces the Earth will become, as viewed from the Earth, completely illuminated by the Sun . Even this full phase will bring an adventure, though, as a total eclipse of this Thunder Moon will occur on July 27. Don't worr

Microsoft Edge iOS beta offers handy visual search tool

Image
Today, beta testers of the Microsoft Edge browser on iOS can now try out Visual Search, which parses images taken by your device's camera and delivers links to related information. The Bing-based feature came to early users on Android last month, and it works with just-taken photos or from those in your camera roll. Microsoft Edge beta testers on iOS also get a couple other new features. One, paste-and-search, saves you a step by letting you look for whatever's on your clipboard instead of having to paste it in a search field first. Those with a work or school account can access intranet sites from their home as well as the ability to see mobile browser activity on the Windows 10 timeline feature. Unlike the Android beta users, those who get an early look at Microsoft Edge on iOS must be enrolled through Apple TestFlight. Via: iMore

'David Bowie Is' coming to your home through AR and VR

Image
Did you miss your chance to see the David Bowie is museum exhibition and pay tribute to the late, great musician ? You won't have to wallow in regret for very long. The David Bowie Archive, Sony Music, Planeta and the Victoria and Albert Museum have announced plans for both augmented and virtual reality 'recreations' of the exhibit. These digital productions will use a series of "audio-visual spaces" to showcase 3D scans of Bowie's artifacts and let you get much closer than you might in real life. You might not only see a legendary costume, but try it on for yourself. The exhibition will arrive on all "major" AR and VR platforms at an unspecified point in the future. There's no exact pricing, but it will carry a cost for a good reason: some of the proceeds will go toward both the V&A Museum and the Brooklyn Museum.

Amazon warehouse workers in Europe stage protest on Prime Day

Image
Amazon warehouse workers in Germany, Spain and Poland are hoping to call the e-commerce giant's attention to their plea for better working conditions by going on strike on Prime Day. The workers for the company's fulfillment centers are protesting the increase in working hours even though they don't receive bonuses, as well as the lack of protection against illnesses. Stefanie Nutzenberger fro m German labor union Verdi, which called for the strike, said "The message is clear -- while the online giant gets rich, it is saving money on the health of its workers." According to The Washington Post , 1,800 workers in Spain went on strike today, July 16th, and the protest in the country is expected to last until July 18th. Thousands of workers across six fulfillment centers in Germany plan to walk out tomorrow, July 17th, while those in Poland intend

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 might come in three sizes, with an in-display fingerprint sensor

Image
Samsung's still weeks away from announcing the Galaxy Note 9 , but we're already moving on to rumors for the company's next flagship phone: the Galaxy S10. According to Business Insider , analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Sunday that he believes the S10 will come in three different sizes: 5.8 inches, 6.1 inches, and 6.4 inches. Those are very nearly the same sizes that Kuo expects Apple's next series of iPhones to come in, letting Samsung match Apple one for one. The larger two S10 models will include in-display fingerprint sensors, Kuo says, while the smaller model will include a fingerprint sensor on the side. That suggests the smaller model will be Samsung's entry-level offering, while the larger two will potentially have higher-end specs and... Instapaper buys itself back from Pinterest

Image
Back in 2013, developer Marco Arment sold his popular read-it-later app Instapaper to Betaworks, the company that had previously acquired Digg. Two years ago, Pinterest bought the little company to "accelerate discovering and saving articles on Pinterest." Now, the very same team that's been working on it for the past five years is taking Instapaper back . Newly formed Instant Paper, Inc. will receive ownership from Pinterest after a 21-day waiting period so it can give Instapaper users fair notice about the change. Not much will change for users of the service, which the new owners say they'll continue offering "for the foreseeable future." The developers also thanked Pinterest for being a good partner over the last two years, which allowed them to rebuild search within the app, add an extension for Firefox users and optimize the product

Adidas pledges to only use recycled plastics by 2024

Image
Adidas is planning to expand its use of recycled plastics well beyond its flagship shoes . The sportswear maker has promised to only use recycled polyester in its shoes and clothing by 2024. While the company's Eric Liedtke didn't provide a detailed roadmap in a chat with the Financial Times , he characterized it as a transition that will see Adidas take "right-sized bites" out of its budget to make the switch without hurting its profit margins. It's no mean feat -- about half of Adidas' material is polyester right now, Liedtke said, so an "overnight" changeover isn't in the cards. A lot of that cost likely has to do with economies of scale. Recycled polyester can carry up to a 20 percent premium over the freshly-made variety, and it could prove daunting to process the material in Adidas-level quantities. The company is likel

CRISPR might cause more unintended DNA damage than we thought

Image
A new study published today in Nature Biotechnology warns that CRISPR may not be the ultra-specific gene editor we've believed it to be. With CRISPR-Cas9, researchers can find particular sequences in a cell's DNA and cut them at a specified spot. The cell can then repair the DNA where it was cut and scientists have been attempting to use this technique to treat all sorts of diseases and disorders including ALS, Huntington's disease , HIV and sickle cell disease . The method has been thought to be rather specific, allowing scientists to target and remove only certain sequences while leaving surrounding DNA intact. But this new study says that CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing might be causing more damage than previously reported. The researchers tested three types of cells -- mouse embryonic stem cells, mouse bone marrow cells and human retinal cells -- and observed
