SpaceX relaunches the final Falcon 9 rocket design

Image
Tonight, SpaceX has launched a satellite to geostationary orbit, but that payload isn't what makes this mission special: it's the rocket itself. The private space corporation has reused a Block 5 booster for the first time, the same one it used to launch a Bangladesh communications satellite back in May. Block 5 is the final version of the company's Falcon 9 rocket, which SpaceX expects to reuse for up to 100 times. Falcon 9 and Merah Putih are vertical on Pad 40 in Florida. Weather is 80% favorable for the two-hour launch window, which opens Tuesday, August 7 at 1:18 a.m. EST, 5:18 a.m. UTC. https://t.co/gtC39uBC7z pic.twitter.com/xT23Oaz7bu — SpaceX (@SpaceX) August 6, 2018 That launch back in May was the first time the company used Block 5 for an actual mission. SpaceX had to take it apart after it landed to make sure that it can be flown a...

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Eclipsed Moon and Mars over Mountains

Image
Eclipsed Moon and Mars over Mountains There is something unusual about this astronomically-oriented photograph. It's not obvious -- it was discovered only during post-processing. It is not the Moon , although capturing the Moon rising during a total lunar eclipse is quite an unusually interesting sight. (Other interesting images also captured during last month's eclipse can be found here .) It is not Mars , found to the lower right of the Moon, although Mars being captured near its brightest also makes for an unusually interesting sight. (Mars is visible nearly the entire night this month; other interesting images of it can be found h e r e .) It is not the foreground mountains , although the French Alps do provide unusually spectacular perspectives on planet Earth . (Other interesting mountainous starscapes can be found h e r e .) It is the goat. August 07, 2018 via NASA htt...

Ford thinks exoskeletons are ready for prime time in its factories

Image
People still build cars. While videos of giant robots welding vehicles are exciting to watch (sparks!), humans are an important part of the assembly of vehicles. However, as you would expect, doing the same thing over and over often leads to injuries. For workers reaching up all day, that motion can be especially hard on their shoulders. To help, Ford will be offering exoskeleton vests to folks in 15 assembly plants around the world. The EksoVests (built by Ekso Bionics) are available for employees that have to reach overhead multiple times a day. The exoskeleton vest doesn't have a motor or battery pack to make its wearer stronger. Instead, it's a mechanical device that offers passive arm support from five to 15 pounds. As the person reaches up, the vest offers their arms additional assistance. The higher they reach, the more support the system adds. ...

Selfie filters are driving new cosmetic surgery trends

Image
Doctors have noticed a new trend: People want to change their body to look like their edited selfies. Specifically, they're referring to photos of themselves taken with apps like Snapchat and Facetune that apply filters to instantly touch-up their appearance. Unsurprisingly, the phenomenon is rooted in body appearance issues, and it even has a name: "Sn apchat dysmorphia." The trend was described by researchers in the Boston University School of Medicine's Department of Dermatology in an article appearing in the journal JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery. It's essentially rooted in dissatisfaction with one's body when compared to how one looks in filtered photos, but this specific application isn't just about wishing to appear more like your spiffed-up selfies: It's wanting cosmetic surgery to look better in future pics, too. "This is...

Apple Pay Cash leads Consumer Reports' first payment service test

Image
Peer-to-peer mobile payment services are all the rage these days (eMarketer expects a 24 percent jump in US adoption in 2018), but which of them is actually the safest to use? Consumer Reports might have an idea. The publication has conducted its first head-to-head test of payment services, and it's clear that some services are better picks than others. While all of the payment platforms were "good enough to use," Apple Pay Cash was the victor due to its stronger-than-usual privacy and security. Apple was the only one whose policies explicitly limited the info it gathered and shared from users and their payments. It didn't store card numbers, and it promised not to sell data. It also asks you to confirm every payment, so you won't send money to someone by mistake. To no one's surprise, its limited platform support was the main setback...
