Preparing for Horizon View – Setting up the Database – 2 of 2

Image
Part of this Horizon view deployment will be to have the connection server logging its events and a configured view composer server. For this we'll need two databases. While I am working with the Express version of MSSQL, the following steps will also apply to other versions of MSSQL (excluding the Linux version). In a […] via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2IRxqA2 If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr

Gene-edited rice plants could boost the world's food supply

Image
Rice may be one of the most plentiful crops on Earth, but there are only so many grains you can naturally obtain from a given plant. Scientists may have a straightforward answer to that problem: edit the plants to make them produce more. They've used CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to create a rice plant variety that produces 25 to 31 percent mor e grain per plant in real world tests, or far more than you'd get through natural breeding. The technique "silenced" genes that improve tolerances for threats like drought and salt, but stifle growth. That sounds bad on the surface, but plants frequently have genetic redundancies -- this approach exploited this duplication just enough to provide all of the benefits and none of the drawbacks. There have been genetically modified rice plants that produced more grains, but those have typically involved borrowin

FDA approves AI tool for spotting wrist fractures

Image
The FDA has been approving its fair share of AI-powered medical technology , but its latest might be particularly helpful if you ever have a nasty fall. The agency has greenlit Imagen's OsteoDetect, an AI-based diagnostic tool that can quickly detect distal radius wrist fractures. Its machine learning algorithm studies 2D X-rays for the telltale signs of fractures and marks them for closer study. It's not a replacement for doctors or clinicians, the FDA stressed -- rather, it's to improve their detection and get the right treatment that much sooner. The approval came relatively quickly by using the De Novo premarket review pathway, which streamlines the process for products with "low to moderate risk." You may have to wait a while before you see OsteoDetect in use at the family doctor's office. However, you might see considerably mo

Facial recognition may help save endangered primates

Image
Facial recognition isn't limited to humans. Researchers have developed a face detection system, PrimNet, that should help save endangered primates by tracking them in a non-invasive way. The neural network-based approach lets field workers keep tabs on chimpanzees, golden monkeys and lemurs just by snapping a photo of them with an Android app -- it'll either produce an exact match or turn up five close candidates. That's much gentler than tracking devices, which can stress or even hurt animals. The scientists trained PrimNet by training it on thousands of reference photos. That's harder work than it sounds, though. As there can be huge variations in hair, fur, eye color and other factors, the team had to manually tag the eyes and mouth to help the technology along. Off-the-shelf human facial recognition tended to suffer from "overfitting&quo

Jeff Bezos outlines Blue Origin's space colony ambitions

Image
It's no secret that Jeff Bezos wants humanity to return to the Moon and otherwise spread its wings beyond Earth. Now, though, he's offering a clearer sense of what that entails -- and it's evident that his ideas stretch well into the long term. In an interview with GeekWire , he explained that he wants Blue Origin to work with NASA and the ESA to create a permanent settlement on the Moon, but will do whatever it takes to make it happen. Don't expect the company to wait if it thinks officials are wasting time, in other words. The company alreadt anticipates launching its Blue Moon lander (abov e) by the mid-2020s, but that's contingent on getting enough support. The Moon is convenient for a colony, Bezos said, noting that it's relatively close by and holds water that could be turned into air and rocket propellant. Bezos is also thinki

Vermont passes first-of-its-kind law to clamp down on data brokers

Image
Data brokers who trade your info behind the scenes will have to watch their step if they're doing business in Vermont. The state has enacted a first-of-its-kind law that both requires brokers to meet certain standards and punishes them if they fall short. They'll have to register in the state, maintain a "comprehensive" security program (including encryption for all sensitive data) and report any breaches. They'll face legal a ction if they break any of these terms or use data for illegal purposes, such as racial discrimination. The measure also demands disclosures that make it clear how and when consumers can opt out. This wouldn't necessarily prevent another incident on the scale of the Cambridge Analytica mess , but the ramifications could still be far-reaching. While there's plenty of regulation for companies that collect dat

Tesla hires executives from Amazon, Apple and Snap

Image
With Tesla losing its Autopilot lead , a key safety rep and other executives in recent months, it's easy to imagine the company having a hard time holding on to executives. Tesla, however, is determined to prove otherwise. It announced a series of executive additions from the past few weeks, some of whom come from big names in tech. To begin with, machine learning veteran Stuart Bowers (whose move was made public on May 22nd) has jumped from Snap to become Tesla's VP of Engineering for both hardware and software. Apple's tech operations leader Neeraj Manrao, meanwhile, is becoming the Director of Energy Manufacturing. Amazon logistics director Mark Mastandrea is now taking charge of Tesla's vehicle delivery services. Even Walmart is losing a tech leader -- its online grocery lead Kate Pearson is now heading up Tesla's field delivery ops. T

Buskers in London are the first to accept tap-to-pay cards

Image
The move toward a cashless society has created a problem for buskers: how do they get paid when many listeners won't have physical currency? There's now a solution on hand. The Mayor of London's office and iZettle (which was recently snapped up by PayPal) have partnered on a first-ever initiative that lets buskers accept tap-to-pay contributions. Participants plug special card readers into their smartphones and set a fixed donation amount -- after that, you just have to wave your card (or a compatible NFC device) to ensure a street performer gets paid. The service has already been in trials for a while by artists like Charlotte Campbell (above), but it should roll out to buskers in all of London's 32 boroughs in the months ahead. And from early tests, it appears to have a meaningful effect -- Campbell touted a "significant" improvement

The best SSDs

Image
By Andrew Cunningham This post was done in partnership with Wirecutter . When readers choose to buy Wirecutter's independently chosen editorial picks, it may earn affiliate commissions that support its work. Read the full article here . Whether you're replacing an existing solid-state drive or upgrading from a traditional hard drive to get better performance, almost every SSD you can buy today is great. But some are still better than others. If you need to buy a SATA SSD right now, we think the 500 GB Crucial MX500 is the best option for most people. The MX500 isn't the fastest SATA SSD you can get, but it comes close, and it has the best combination of price, performance, and capacity of any drive you can buy. Who this is for Buying an SSD is a great way to upgrade almost any one- to five-year-old computer that has a traditional hard drive. SSD

vSAN Effective Capacity – Quick and Dirty Sizer Tool

Image
Found this online tool  to quickly approximate how much datastore capacity you can get from a certain number of vSAN hosts with certain configuration. I think this is very useful in the case where you already have certain number of physical hosts with vSAN compatible disks, and you want to determine how much capacity you can get from it, and the capacity of cache disk you need to provide to fulfil the 10% recommendation of cache capacity compare to consumed storage ( reference ). In my experience, I have seen couple of customers where they already have considerably new server hardware with vSAN compatible components where they want to see what they will get if they use vSAN. Please note that VMware has official vSAN Sizing Calculator where you can get recommendation of the hardware specification you need to provide to accommodate certain number of workloads (VMs). This online tool is very e
