Alibaba’s new autonomous robot delivers packages at a modest pace

Image
Unlike its car vending machine concept , Alibaba's ideas for robots have been more mundane and mainly confined to warehouses (the same kind that Amazon uses ). But today, the Chinese ecommerce titan introduced a package-delivering 'bot that uses LiDAR to navigate around. The package locker it carries uses facial recognition to ensure it's got the right recipient before popping open its doors. The G Plus, as it's called, is being developed with Chinese company RoboSense. The robotics outfit lends its LiDar technology to the robot, which uses it for the same purpose as self-driving cars: To create a 3D map of its surroundings and avoid obstacles. The G Plus is essentially a delivery locker on wheels, capable of carrying packages and food at a sedate (and pedestrian-friendly) pace, maxing its speed at under ten miles per hour and dropping it to just over

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Mars Approach

Image
Mars Approach Since the distance from Earth to Mars changes drastically as the planets orbit the Sun, Mars' appearance changes dramaticaly. Mars is bright now, and it's getting closer and brighter still as it orbits toward its 2018 opposition and closest approach to Earth in late July. This sequence of sharp telescopic images records the Red Planet's steady increase in apparent size for the months of January (top left) through April. During that time its distance from Earth went from 284 million kilometers in January to 129 million kilometers in April, and so its apparent size more than doubled. At closest approach Mars will be about 58 million kilometers distant, more than doubling in apparent size compared to the disk at the lower right. By then it wil l rival the brightness of Jupiter in planet Earth's night sky, but don't believe the claims of the inevitable

'Assassin's Creed: Odyssey' takes the series to ancient Greece

Image
Just hours after the leaked image of a keychain accessory revealed the game, Ubisoft has posted a quick teaser for Assassin's Creed: Odyssey . With only five seconds of video, the teaser serves as a quick callback to the movie 300 as a Spartan-looking warrior boots his enemy off of a cliff, before flashing the game's logo with a familiar helmet in the middle. Along with the leak, an insider told JeuxvideoLive that this game follows Assassin's Creed: Origins with a trip to ancient Greece, where there's plenty of heroic tales, battles and mythology to mine. Kotaku reports other sources claiming that it should arrive during Ubisoft's fiscal 2019 period, and that it will include even more RPG-style elements than the last game. We'll find out more during E3 See you at E3! pic.twitter.com/03NTPhCkCf — Assassin's Creed (@assassinscree

Uganda imposes a social media tax to prevent 'gossip'

Image
Today, Uganda's parliament passed a controversial "social media tax." It will consist of a daily fee of about 200 shillings (5 US cents) levied on anyone who uses social networking and messaging apps and platforms like Whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter. According to Trading Economics , in 2016, Uganda had a per-capita income of $666.10, so this isn't an insubstantial tax. President Yoweri Museveni was a vocal supporter of and advocate the bill. He believes that social media encourages "gossip," according to BBC News . The law will go into effect as of July 1st, but it's not clear how the government will monitor its citizens or collect the tax. This is certainly a strange way to regulate the use of social media within a country. It's possible there may also be a political angle here, as President Musaveni suspended access to social me
