Windows 'Your Phone' app gives you access to Android files on a PC

Image
If you have an Android device and happen to be a Windows Insider in the Fast ring, as well, you're among the first people who can take Microsoft's " Your Phone " app for a spin. Microsoft has started testing the experimental application, which gives you easy access to the files on your phone from a Windows 10 PC. Sure, you can use third-party and cloud services (or you can email yourself), but the feature promises a more seamless way to access files across devices. When you access Your Phone on a computer, you'll see the most recent snapshots on your Android device. You'll then be able to drag and drop them stra ight into another app, like PowerPoint if you're doing a presentation. Microsoft first announced the drag-and-drop experience earlier this year during its annual Build developer conference in Seattle. It will eventually be a

Huawei supplants Apple as the second largest smartphone seller

Image
While Huawei was already a smartphone giant , analyst numbers released today show that in the last quarter it sold more smartphones than any company in the world other than Samsung . IDC and Strategy Analytics found that smartphone sales slowed overall, a trend that hit Samsung the hardest of the big companies with its sales dropping off by more than 10 percent from last year. In its earnings report yesterday, Samsung said it's move d the Galaxy Note 9 launch up as a result of lackluster Galaxy S9 sales, and it's planning new devices based on foldable OLED technology . Meanwhile, for Huawei a healthy reception for the P20 (we called it " the best smartphone you'll never buy ") and the popularity of its midrange Nova devices delivered sales of 54.2 million units. That beat their projections for Apple by more than 10 million and snagged 15 percent of

Astronomy Picture of the Day: The Iris Nebula in a Field of Dust

Image
The Iris Nebula in a Field of Dust What blue flower grows in this field of dark interstellar dust? The Iris Nebula . The striking blue color of the Iris Nebula is created by light from the bright star SAO 19158 reflecting off of a dense patch of normally dark dust . Not only is the star itself mostly blue, but blue light from the star is preferentially reflected by the dust -- the same affect that makes Earth's sky blue . The brown tint of the pervasive dust comes partly from photoluminescence -- dust converting ultraviolet radiation to red light. Cataloged as NGC 7023, the Iris Nebula is studied frequently because of the unusual prevalence there of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), complex molecules that are also released on Earth during the incomplete combustion of wood fires. The bright blue portion of the Iris Nebula spans about six light years. The Iris Nebula,

Facebook's Cambridge Analytica woes continue with UK lawsuits

Image
Facebook's Cambridge Analytica troubles are far from over and a new class action lawsuit over the scandal might be on the way. Wired reports today that a group of UK residents has sent the company a letter before claim, in which they highlight the many instances where the social media giant failed to protect its users' privacy and demand answers to a list of questions. Represented by UK-based law firm Irvine Thanvi Natas Solicitors, the UK residents all had their data obtained by Cambridge Analytica, and their attorney says that if their questions aren't answered within 14 days, legal action could be taken. The 27-page letter, which Wired was able to review, claims that Facebook violated the UK's Data Protection Act, which could entitle the dozens of claimants to compensation. The claimants want more thorough answers to questions about who had access t

Neato robot vacuum can map multiple floors of your home

Image
Robot vacuums can frequently map a floor of your home to clean without much fuss. But if you aren't living in an apartment or bungalow, you probably have multiple floors -- where's the robovac for that? Neato thinks it can oblige. It's releasing a software update to the Botvac D7 Connected that lets its automated cleaner create maps for up to three floors. You'll still have to haul the robot up and down the sta irs, but that beats buying another model just to avoid breaking out conventional cleaning tools. Neato is selling stand-alone charging stations (currently $40 each) to save you from moving the power source every time. The update promises to make larger cleaning jobs easier, for that matter. It includes a "Quick Boost" charging feature that has the robot calculate the electricity it needs to complete a given cleaning task, and
