Niantic snaps up Seismic Games to build new AR experiences

Image
Niantic has acquired yet another developer in a bid to conquer AR gaming. The Pokémon Go creator has announced that it has acquired LA-based Seismic Games, mostly known for turn-based mobile RPG Marvel: Strikeforce . You can assemble Marvel characters in the free-to-play title, which brought in $25 million in worldwide player spending over the past four months. Seismic is also the company behind Blade Runner: Revelations , a virtual reality game for Google Daydream that's probably more in line with what it's going to work on going forward. According to Niantic, Seismic will continue to work on its own games but will transition into building all-new AR experiences for the company. The company said in a statement: "We recently gave a peek under the hood of the Niantic Real World Platform, and we see the addition of Seismic Games as a significant accel

Elon Musk, DeepMind founders, and others sign pledge to not develop lethal AI weapon systems

Image
Tech leaders, including Elon Musk and the three co-founders of Google's AI subsidiary DeepMind, have signed a pledge promising to not develop "lethal autonomous weapons." It's the latest move from an unofficial and global coalition of researchers and executives that's opposed to the propagation of such technology. The pledge warns that weapon systems that use AI to "[select] and [engage] targets without human intervention" pose moral and pragmatic threats. Morally, the signatories argue, the decision to take a human life "should never be delegated to a machine." On the pragmatic front, they say that the spread of such weaponry would be "dangerously destabilizing for every country and individual." The pledge was published today at the... 'Black Friday: Revolution 1979' is coming to consoles starting July 31st

Image
"We need more games like 1979 Revolution: Black Friday ," Engadget Senior Reporter Jessica Conditt wrote in 2016. Two years later and the historical title chronicling the Iranian revolution will make its way from PC and mobile platforms to the Nintendo Switch. We now know when it'll be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well. Come July 31st (Harry Potter's birthday, mind you) you'll be able to take the role of a photojournalist covering the titular event on PS4 , while the Switch and Xbox One versions will be released two and three days later, respectively. Pre-order pages aren't live just yet, but once they are, your lack of patience will be rewarded with a 20 percent discount. In her game of the year write-up , my colleague Jess called 1979 "intense, emotional and thoughtful," continuing that it "humanizes a cruc

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Dark Slope Streaks Split on Mars

Image
Dark Slope Streaks Split on Mars What is creating these dark streaks on Mars? No one is sure. Candidates include dust avalanches, evaporating dry ice sleds , and liquid water flows. What is clear is that the streaks occur through light surface dust and expose a deeper dark layer. Similar streaks have been photographed on Mars for years and are one of the few surface features that change their appearance seasonally . Particularly interesting here is that larger streaks split into smaller streaks further down the slope. The featured image was taken by the HiRISE camera on board the Mars-orbiting Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) several months ago. Currently, a global dust storm is encompassing much of Mars. DeepMind, Elon Musk and more pledge not to make autonomous AI weapons

Image
Today during the Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, the Future of Life Institute announced that more than 2,400 individuals and 160 companies and organizations have signed a pledge, declaring that they will "neither participate in nor support the development, manufacture, trade or use of lethal autonomous weapons." The signatories, representing 90 countries, also call on governments to pass laws against such weapons. Google DeepMind and the Xprize Foundation are among the groups who've signed on while Elon Musk and Deep Mind co-founders Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman have made the pledge as well. The pledge comes as a handful of companies are facing backlash over their technologies and how they're providing them to government agencies and law enforcement groups. Google has come under fire for its Project Maven Pentagon c

'World's largest' sports streamer makes US debut September 10th

Image
DAZN has become one of the better-known live sports streaming services (it bills itself as the "world's largest"), but you wouldn't know it if you lived in the US. It's only been available in Canada, Japan and a handful of European countries. It's thankfully addressing that omission soon, albeit not quite in the way you'd hope. The company is launching DAZN in the US on September 10th, with your $10 per month initially providing "combat sports" like boxing and mixed martial arts. Partnerships with both Matchroomboxing and Bellator MMA will let you see some fairly big fights, including Anthony Joshua's bout against Anthony Povetkin (September 22nd) and Matt Mitrione versus Ryan Bader (October 12th). Over 70 fights are already lined up, DAZN said, with an average of at least one fight a week. The service is already

World Cup tweets were viewed 115 billion times

Image
Twitter had high hopes that the World Cup would be a big hit on its platform. The previous games in 2014 happened before the platform released video features, but this time around, it secured a deal with the event's US rights holder Fox Sports, as well as others across the world, for exclusive content like highlight clips and interviews. As the dust settles following the French team's triumph over underdog Croatia's squad in Sunday's final game, Twitter has released its own numbers to give us an idea how the World Cup went for the platform. For starters, the big number: Twitter had 115 billion impressions (i.e. views of tweets) during the World Cup. While that's a lot, the company didn't break that down to explain which matches attracted more interactions than others -- even when reached for comment. Twitter told Engadget it wasn't sharing

UPS tests entering locked lobbies to deliver packages in NYC

Image
After weeks of rumors, Amazon confirmed last October that it was working on a system to deliver packages while people weren't home. In essence, a smart lock would allow workers entry and record them while they deposited parcels. Despite the concept unnerving all but the most optimistic, the company went ahead and started rolling out the concept in April. Apparently, UPS started quietly toying with the same idea ea rlier this year by starting a pilot program in New York City to deliver packages while users aren't home. To be clear, UPS' experiment is more conservative than Amazon's: The service's pilot program is limited to high-density multi-family residences (presumably, large apartment buildings) and workers only get access to lobbies or delivery rooms. The pilot has expanded exclusively to units equipped with Latch smart locks, which only ope

Instagram test lets public accounts remove followers

Image
You've long had the option to remove Instagram followers if you keep your account private, but that's something of a compromise. Why do you have to shut yourself off from the outside world just to keep out a few undesirables? You might not have to make that choice going forward. Instagram has confirmed that it's testing an option to remove followers while maintaining a public account. While it hasn't share more details than that, the app informs test ers that it won't notify soon-to-be-former followers that you're leaving them behind. Much as with other social networks, that's likely to minimize outrage from people who can't handle the rejection. It's easy to see why you'd want the option with a public account. You may not want an ex or former friend commenting on everything you do, for instance. And if you've ever s

Twitter puts verification fixes on hold as elections loom

Image
Twitter has spent the past several months trying to fix its verification mess , but it looks like you'll have to wait a while longer for a solution. New product lead Kayvon Beykpour has announced that Twitter is putting its verification reform efforts on hold to focus on "information quality" in the run-up to the US mid-term elections. The move is meant to help the social network "move faster" on areas it thinks are "most important," Beykpour said. The company will come back to the verification issue once it makes "more progress," Beykpour added, referencing an email that hinted it might take a few weeks. He also acknowledge that the ad hoc verification in the meantime has produced "frustration" from people who already saw Twitter verification as a mysterious, inconsistent process. The pause isn't going t
