Palmer Luckey chases government contracts with 'virtual wall'

Image
When you hear talk of a border wall, you typically picture an actual, physical construction. But that's not the case for Palmer Luckey. The Oculus co-founder and his startup Anduril Industries have been working on a virtual wall -- one complete with cameras, sensors and VR -- with the aim of scoring a US defense contract and providing border security at a fraction of the cost of a physical wall. Luckey discussed plans for this technology last year, but now it's being tested, both officially and unofficially, and it's catching the eye of US officials. Wired reports that Anduril has constructed a prototype of its Lattice system on a ranch in Texas and is also conducting a government-funded test of its technology outside of San Diego. "They said they could provide broader border security for a lower cost," Melissa Ho, managing director of Silicon V

Create an ISO file with PowerShell!

Image
I received a request at work to transfer 5+gb from the internal network, to a server in the DMZ.  Our DMZ networks are locked down, so I cannot copy the files directly.  I have the trial version of UltraISO that I've used for tasks like this in the past, but it's limited to 300mb in the trial version.  Previously, we've used a "swing VMDK" that we'd mount on an internal VM, copy the data to it, take this VMDK and via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2sQx5nc If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Star Size Comparison 2

Image
Star Size Comparison 2 How big is our Sun compared to other stars? In dramatic and popular video s featured on YouTube , the relative sizes of planets, stars, and even the universe are shown from smallest to largest. The featured video begins with Earth's Moon and progresses through increasingly larger moons and planets in our Solar System . Soon, the Sun is shown and compared to many of the brighter stars in our neighborhood of the Milky Way Galaxy . Finally, star sizes are shown in comparison with the Milky Way Galaxy , galaxi es across the observable universe , and speculatively, regions of a potentially greater multiverse . Note that the true sizes of most stars outside of the Sun and Betelgeuse are not known by direct observation, but rather inferred by measurements of their perceived brightness , temperature , and distance. Although an inspiring learning tool that is most

'Ghost of Tsushima' shows off gorgeous, brutal combat

Image
We've just gotten our first look at developer Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima . In the demo, we saw plenty of combat, with the player executing parries like we haven't seen since Xbox One launch title, Ryse: Son of Rome . Except, you know, without all the quick-time events. Our protagonist is just as adept at sneaking through the bushes and stealthily taking out guards with his sword, clambering around on rooftops a la the old Tenchu: Stealth Assassins games, and then sinking his blade into hapless foes below. Combat look to borrow from the Batman Arkham games, with you switching between targets, in rhythm on the fly. Until you start a one-on-one fight. Then the camera shifts to a 2D plane of sorts, and the combat is much more deliberately paced. And well, that's the extent of what was shown off in PlayStation's E3 tent. Sony first showed

Bethesda's E3 2018 show: Our verdict

Image
Bethesda's E3 press conference is over. Join editors Jess Conditt and Mat Smith as they break down the most important announcements. Or, if you haven't got seven minutes, here's an even shorter breakdown: What did we expect to happen? We already knew that Bethesda was going to be covering Rage 2 and Fallout 76 in its E3 press conference. The former was announced on May 14th following a rather embarrassing leak via Walmart Canada. The next Fallout game, meanwhile, was teased in a not-so-subtle Twitch stream on May 30th, and debuted proper during Microsoft's E3 press conference. It was no surprise, then, to see both games were unpacked with extensive presentations at Bethesda's showcase. What surprised us? Bethesda teased an entirely new IP, Starfield , and t

FromSoftware is making a PSVR game called ‘Deracine'

Image
When you think of FromSoftware, what comes to mind? Dark, grisly worlds and tense, strategic combat I imagine. Well, the developer is working on a new PlayStation VR game which seems to have none of those things. Déraciné is about a young girl in a boarding school who manages to summon a mysterious spirit and sets out to prove its existence while bonding with her fellow students. The so-called "story adventure" will be out later this year, and follows the announcement of cyber ninja adventure Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice , which is also being made by FromSoftware. New 'Spider-Man' trailer shows off every villain imaginable

Image
Were you worried that Marvel's Spider-Man would have a lightweight, no-stakes story? You can rest easy. Insomniac and Sony have posted a fresh gameplay trailer for the game, and it's clear the two want a game that puts Spidey in real peril. The clip sees virtually every one of the hero's main rivals confronting him during a prison break, including Electro, Rhino and Scorpion. And by the end... well, it doesn't look good for our champion. The gameplay itself, meanwhile, is what you'd expect -- it's a mix of mano-a-mano brawling, acrobatics and web slinging. Lots of web slinging. It won't surprise you with its game mechanics, then, but it looks fast-paced enough that we're looking forward to the game's September 7th release. Dark Souls creator From Software is making a VR game called Déraciné

Image
Dark Souls and Bloodborne creator From Software is making an exclusive virtual reality game for Sony's PlayStation VR platform called Déraciné . The game was officially unveiled at Sony's PlayStation E3 keynote this evening in Los Angeles with a teaser trailer . From the admittedly short glimpses of it, Déraciné looks like a will be a substantial departure away from the action-oriented and horror approach of From Software's more recent and celebrated titles in the Soulsborne series. Here's how Sony describes it: As a spirit summoned by a young girl in a secluded boarding school, the player must prove its existence and build a unique bond with the students through clever interactions. As the mystery of the story unfolds, the spirit must... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2JJcdbb

Spider-Man for PS4 shows off its open-world web-swinging in new trailer

Image
But this year, just a few months out from Spider-Man 's planned September 7th release date, Sony and Insomniac Games are blowing the lid off what to expect from the swinging superhero's video game return, with a deep dive during Sony's E3 presentation of gameplay, combat, and the all-important web-swinging in a new extended trailer. Sony first unveiled Spider-Man from Insomniac Games back at E3 2016, and showed off the a preview of early gameplay footage a year later at last year's show. But today's preview gives the best look yet at the game, with a deeper look at how combat will work in the upcoming game. There's also appearances from a whole chunk of Spider-Man's rogue gallery of villains, including Electro, Rhino, Scorpion, Vulture,... Team Ninja teases 'Nioh 2' for PS4

Image
As another short trailer began at the PlayStation press event at E3 in Los Angeles this evening, a samurai warrior stumbling through a foggy wood was attacked by a big red demon. The warrior fights valiantly, but his helmet is soon knocked off, showing him to also be a demon, at least in part, with glowing red horns. He pulls them out of his forehead and takes a much more monstrous form. Nioh 2 is announced. "Defy Death," said the trailer. And then, "Death Defies You." Team Ninja's sequel to its original comeback story will hopefully fare as well as the first . The trailer holds no details on release date, nor platform exclusivity, but it does look fairly stunning. Watch the 'Death Stranding' gameplay footage to be even more confused

Image
The first game from Kojima Studios, "Death Stranding", left audiences' mouths agape during its initial previews during last year's E3. For 2018, Sony once again wowed the audience, this time with actual gameplay footage. Not that that actually helped anybody understand what the heck is going on. Watching Sony's E3 preview video has left the crowd (and this reporter) genuinely perplexed. Norman Reedus plays as Sam Bridges, a post-apocalyptic courier tasked with delivering his cargo while "carrying the stranded remnants of the future in his hands," which seems to perhaps be a fetal version of himself? This game feels a lot like The Transporter meets Edge of Tomorrow. It certainly looks gorgeous, to be sure, but seriously what the what? Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux and Lindsay Wagner also star in Kojima's latest genre-defining ad
