Uber will pay drivers in some cities to use electric cars

Image
Uber would like its drivers to go electric , but it knows that practical realities like high prices and hours of charging time make that difficult. Its solution? Give those drivers a helping hand. It's launching an EV Champions pilot program in seven cities (Austin, Los Angeles, Montreal, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle) that includes "direct monetary incentives" to drive EVs in some cities, including the existing testing ground of Pittsburgh. Local utilities are sometimes fronting part of the cost. The compensation varies, but don't expect to buy a Model 3 with your fare. The LA Times learned that drivers in Pittsburgh, San Diego and San Francisco are getting just $1 extra per ride, with at least San Diego drivers capping out at $20 per week. Sacramento drivers Suffice it to say this is more for part-time drivers who are t

Certification Insights: VCP Course and Certification Version Matching

Image
When pursuing a VMware Certified Professional (VCP) certification, the version of the course you take to meet your training requirement must match the version of your VCP exam. There are times when a course becomes available on a newer version of the product, before the exam. In those cases, we allow a higher version course The post Certification Insights: VCP Course and Certification Version Matching appeared first on VMware Education Services . via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2MDSfgJ If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr

vRealize Network Insight 3.8 – What’s new in the API?

Image
One of my favorite products has just dropped a new version. vRealize Network Insight 3.8 (vRNI) has just hit the downloads and has a bunch of cool new stuff (link to vmware.com blog). vRNI 3.6 introduced a public API with which you can do most of the day-2 operations. vRNI 3.7 didn't bring any changes to the API, but 3.8 does. Below are the changes in the API version 1.1.0. Fetching info in bulk Version 1.0.0 had endpoints to grab information from entities (VMs, hosts, firewall rules, etc), but it was a bit tedious. You had to request a paged … Read more The post vRealize Network Insight 3.8 – What's new in the API? appeared first on Lostdomain.org . via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2K5dVE8 If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/fee

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Pillars of the Eagle Nebula in Infrared

Image
Pillars of the Eagle Nebula in Infrared Newborn stars are forming in the Eagle Nebula. Gravitationally contracting in pillars of dense gas and dust, the intense radiation of these newly-formed bright stars is causing surrounding material to boil away. This image , taken with the Hubble Space Telescope in near infrared light , allows the viewer to see through much of the thick dust that makes the pillars opaque in visible light. The giant structures are light years in length and dubbed informally the Pillars of Creation . Associated with the open star cluster M16 , the Eagle Nebula lies about 6,500 light years away. The Eagle Nebula is an easy target for small telescopes in a nebula-rich part of the sky toward the split constellation Serpens Cauda (the tail of the snake). MIT uses brain signals and hand gestures to control robots

Image
Robotic technology has a staggering range of applications, but getting it to perform adequately can be a challenge, requiring specific programming based around the way humans communicate with language. But now, researchers from MIT have developed a way to control robots more intuitively, using hand gestures and brainwaves. The team harnessed the power of brain signals called "error-related potentials" (ErrPs), which naturally occur when people notice a mistake. The system monitors the brain activity of a person observing robotic work, and if an ErrP occurs -- because the robot has made an error -- the robot pauses its activity so the user can correct it. This happens via an interface that measures muscle activity -- the person makes hand gestures to select the correct option for the robot. In one trial, the team used "Baxter", a robot from

Snapchat Lenses bring coral reefs to your neighborhood

Image
How do you make nature exciting to a generation growing up with Snapchat and Instagram? The California Academy of Sciences has an idea: bring the nature to the apps that generation is using. It just trotted out a series of augmented reality Snapchat Lenses (the first of their kind, CAS said) that show reef life in your own corner of the world. You can get up close to creatures like sea turtles, nudibranches and moray eels without having to put on some diving gear or incurring the wrath of conservationists. These are Lens Studio creations, so you only need to grab the relevant Snapcodes (at the source link) to get started. No, this won't stand in for a documentary or classroom lecture. However, that's not really the point -- this is more about fostering interest in the reefs, whether you're interested in preserving them or are just curious about what
