Astronomy Picture of the Day: The Cats Eye Nebula from Hubble

Image
The Cats Eye Nebula from Hubble To some, it may look like a cat's eye. The alluring Cat's Eye nebula, however, lies three thousand light-years from Earth across interstellar space. A classic planetary nebula , the Cat's Eye (NGC 6543) represents a final, brief yet glorious phase in the life of a sun-like star. This nebula 's dying central star may have produced the simple, outer pattern of dusty concentric shells by shrugging off outer layers in a series of regular convulsions. But the formation of the beautiful, more complex inner structures is not well understood . Seen so clearly in this digitally sharpened Hubble Space Telescope image, the truly cosmic eye is over half a light-year across. Of course, gazing into this Cat's Eye , astronomers may well be seeing the fate of our sun, destined to enter its own planetary nebula phase of evolution ... in about 5...

Hands on with 'Command & Conquer Rivals'

Image
The Command and Conquer franchise made its PC debut all the way back in 1995. In the two decades since, the game has garnered a rabid following with dozens of sequels and spinoffs. In 2018, the C&C experience returns to mobile with the free-to-play Command and Conquer Rivals , which EA debuted ahead of E3 2018 on Saturday. I was afforded a brief hands-on with the title during the EA Play event and this C&C strongly reminds me of the original. In that I had no clue as to what I was doing through most of it and lost almost immediately to a 12-year-old. Like its desktop-based ancestors, C&C Rivals tasks players with balancing force and resource production against attacking enemy positions, a la Clash Royale . In this case, two opposing players situated on either side of a central missile silo attempt to destroy one another's base. True to its C&C lin...

Senate bills would make quantum computing a priority

Image
There's a worldwide race to dominate quantum computing , and two new pieces of legislation might help the US claim the lead. Senator Kamala Harris has introduced the first, the Quantum Computing Research Act, to provide a "competitive edge" in development. It would cre ate a Quantum Computing Research Consortium in the Department of Defense to coordinate progress, offer grants and oversee initiatives. The measure would boost the economy, create jobs and bolster national security, if you ask Harris. Gizmodo , meanwhile, has seen a second draft bill that would start a decade-long National Quantum Initiative Program to set priorities for developing the technology, including investments and partnerships. The Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Director of National Intelligence would ...

Tesla Roadster may offer SpaceX package with actual rockets

Image
Yes, you read that correctly. Elon Musk has followed up on remarks from Tesla's annual shareholder meeting (not to mention more cryptic hints in November) with a statement that the new Roadster's previously mentioned "SpaceX option package" will include 10 small rocket thrusters strung around the car. Reportedly, the kit would "dramatically improve" acceleration, braking, cornering and everything in between. It sounds ridiculous, but this isn't the most outlandish thing Musk has talked about in recent months. We wouldn't absolutely count on it, but we wouldn't bet against it, either. We've asked Tesla if it can elaborate. Provided this isn't just hyping up a more conventional package , it raises all kinds of questions. Is it street legal? (Probably not.) How many uses will you have? Can you refuel it yourself? And j...

Airbnb lets hosts offer their homes for future emergencies

Image
Airbnb hosts have long had the opportunity to offer free housing during emergencies . What about making yourself available ahead of time? If you live in the right area, you're set. The home rental service is launching a pilot program that will let San Jose residents put themselves on a standby list before there's even a hint of a crisis. The move should speed up the community's response in the event of a crisis, ensuring that stranded people don't have to wait for she lters over their heads. The test run will also include in-person preparedness recruiting and training as well as a "new operational protocol" for emergencies that includes management teams. The pilot is poised to expand to other cities after the San Jose launch. There's a strong incentive to do this: it builds good will at a time when some cities are still giving Airbnb...

Kia recalls 500,000 vehicles in the US due to airbag glitch

Image
Kia has issued a recall for 507,000 vehicles in the US, and those who get a notice may want to make sure they comply with its request. The automaker said those vehicles' airbag control units may be susceptible to an electronic glitch that prevents their airbags from deploying in a crash. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is in the midst of investigating why the airbags in the Kia an d (its affiliate automaker) Hyundai vehicles involved in six serious serious crashes, which killed four people and injured six, didn't deploy during the collisions. Kia's recall includes Forte models 2010 to 2013, Optima models 2011 to 2013, Optima Hybrid models 2011 to 2012 and Sedona vehicles. It explained that the vehicles' susceptibility to electrical overstress can cause a short circuit that prevents both the frontal airbags and seat...

Tesla Roadster's 'Augmented Mode' will boost your driving ability

Image
Tesla's current semi-autonomous technology helps reduce your driving involvement . Its next big move, however, could encourage you to take a more hands-on approach. Elon Musk has revealed that the new Roadster will include an "Augmented Mode" that promises to "massively enhance" your driving ability -- he likened it to Tony Stark's Iron Man suit. Just how it would work is unsurprisingly a mystery (the car isn't even slated to arrive until 2020), but it's implied that this will give you a helping hand when you're driving near the car's performance limits. The concept of a car augmenting your driving ability is far from new. Some sports cars are well-known for their ability to bail you out when you push too hard, such as Nissan's GT-R. The difference is that those cars typically rely on all-wheel drive and other strai...

'Command & Conquer' mobile game wants in on that 'Clash of Clans' money

Image
If you were looking for a full-scale return of the Command & Conquer franchise, this probably isn't it. During the EA Play presentation at E3, the publisher revealed the new mobile game Command & Conquer: Rivals , a simplified 1v1 combat game built for small-scale smartphone play. It takes all the trappings of the venerable RTS and crams them into a format made popular by the wildly financially successful Clash of Clans . Like other compact competitive mobile games, Command & Conquer: Rivals shows the whole map on the screen, though your opponent is hidden behind fog of war. This is one of several concessions to the long-running franchise: Players pick between the old-school GDI and Nod factions with their own signature units, like the mammoth tank. Instead of throwing armies against each other's bases, the game has players fighting over three p...

Chinese hackers reportedly stole data related to secret projects from a US Navy contractor

Image
The computers of a US Navy contractor were breached by Chinese hackers, who stole hundreds of gigabytes of information about secret projects, reports The Washington Post . According to officials who spoke with the Post , the breaches occurred in January and February of this year. The target was an unnamed contractor that worked with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, which the Navy uses to conduct "research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support center for submarines, autonomous underwater systems and offensive and defensive weapons systems associated with undersea warfare." Hackers stole 614 gigabytes of data from the contractor, relating to a project called Sea Dragon, a secret project that the Defense...
