Infrastructure Under Attack

Image
What makes a DDoS attack different from an everyday data breach? The answer is embedded in the term: denial of service. The motive of a DDoS attack is to prevent the delivery of online services that people depend on. Financial institutions, gaming and e-commerce websites are among the top targets of DDoS attacks, as are cloud service providers that host sites or service applications for business customers. Even a brief disruption of service delivery can cost an enterprise millions in lost business, not counting the after-effects of alienated customers and reputational damage. Because DDoS attacks and data breaches are so different in nature, conventional security infrastructure components used to combat breaches – perimeter firewalls, intrusion detection/preventions systems (IDI/IPS) and the like – are comparatively ineffective at mitigating DDoS attacks. These security products ce

Astronomy Picture of the Day: NGC 6744 Close Up

Image
NGC 6744 Close Up Beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 6744 is nearly 175,000 light-years across, larger than our own Milky Way . It lies some 30 million light-years distant in the southern constellation Pavo, its galactic disk tilted towards our line of sight. This Hubble close-up of the nearby island universe spans about 24,000 light-years across NGC 6744's central region in a detailed portrait that combines visible light and ultraviolet image data. The giant galaxy's yellowish core is dominated by the visible light from old, cool stars. Beyond the core are pinkish star forming regions and young star clusters scattered along the inner spiral arms. The young star clusters are bright at ultraviolet wavelengths, shown in blue and magenta hues. May 31, 2018 via NASA https://ift.tt/2kD80ro

Netflix releases a trailer for 'The Magic Order' comic book

Image
If you still can't wrap your head around the fact that Netflix is publishing a comic book , maybe this trailer can help. The streaming giant has released an animated trailer for The Magic Order by Mark Millar's comic book empire, which Netflix snapped up last year. It's a six-issue series written by Millar himself with art by Olivier Coipel who's mostly known for his work with Marvel ( Avengers, X-Men, Thor ). The story revolves around five families of magicians sworn to protect our world from forces of darkness and who are now being hunted and picked off one by one by an enemy. This is only the beginning of Netflix's work with Millarworld, though -- the company plans to develop films and shows based on the publisher's creations, which include Kick-Ass and Wanted. Those are probably more in line with what you'd expect from the stre

Uber in ‘discussions’ to get Waymo self-driving cars on its network

Image
Speaking today at the Code Conference , Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi says that his company is in "discussions" to have Waymo self-driving cars added to its network. It's probably too early to think that these talks are definitely going anywhere yet, but it's nevertheless notable because we're less that four months past the resolution of a bitter legal fight between the two companies over alleged trade-secret theft. "I'd welcome Waymo to put cars in our network," he says. When Recode's Kara Swisher asked how Uber would make the case to Waymo to make its cars available via the Uber app, Khosrowshahi's answer was simple: "Economics." He characterized Uber's ride-sharing network as the biggest on the planet, so it would make sense for Waymo to... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https

MoviePass parent company gets into the film production business

Image
Helios and Matheson Analytics, the parent company of movie ticket subscription service MoviePass , is trying to vertically integrate its business with a new acquisition . It has an "exclusive option" to acquire the library and production slate of Emmett Furla Oasis Films (EFO Films), and the two are launching a new nameplate called MoviePass Films. Despite MoviePass ' precarious financial situation (it loses money once subscribers pick up a single ticket in cities like New York and LA) it has expressed interest in making movies to own both sides of the pipeline, with a belief that its service will help pump up marketing. Helios and Matheson CEO Ted Farnsworth told Variety the deal "signals our long-term commitment to the movie business." MoviePass is scheduled to release two movies in June, including American Animals and a co-production

Foursquare puts check-in data to greater use in apps like Snapchat

Image
Foursquare might not be as big as it was in its heyday, but it has a clever strategy for remaining important: it's making itself indispensable to the apps you use every day. On top of its recent Tinder Places deal , it's becomi ng the main point-of-interest provider for Mapbox, whose location info powers apps like Snapchat, Instacart and Lonely Planet. Even if you've never touched Foursquare or Swarm , you'll likely be using some of their data when you swing by a restaurant or hotel. This isn't the first time the two have hooked up. Foursquare was one of the first companies to use Mapbox's global info way back in 2012. There's no question that this brings the two much closer, though, and suggests that Foursquare's strategy of sharing uncannily accurate trip info (thankfully anonymized) is paying off. Source: Mapbo

Hulu’s live TV service surpasses 800,000 subscribers

Image
During an interview with CNBC today, Hulu CEO Randy Freer said that the company's live TV service had surpassed 800,000 subscribers, with April being the best month yet for gaining new customers. The live service launched just over a year ago and in January, sources familiar with the company's numbers told CNBC that the live offering had around 450,000 subscribers at the time. While Hulu currently trails more established rivals like Sling TV and DirecTV Now -- which have 2.2 million and 1.5 million subscribers, respectively -- it was doing better than fellow newcomer YouTube TV earlier this year. CNBC's sources reported in January that YouTube's live service had around 300,000 subscribers . During the interview, Freer said he believed Hulu's on-demand service, which offers approximately 75,000 episodes of TV shows, will continue to attract

Scientists have 3D printed the most advanced artificial cornea ever using human cells

Image
Scientists have 3D printed the thin protective film over the eye, called the cornea, using human cells — and it's the most advanced version of an artificial cornea yet. Should the technology improve, it could help millions of people see again. It was tricky to find the right recipe for an ink that's thin enough to squirt through a 3D printer's nozzle, says Che Connon , a tissue engineer at Newcastle University who was one of the creators of the artificial cornea. This bio-ink didn't just have to be thin — it also had to be stiff enough that it could hold its shape as a 3D structure. To get the right consistency, the researchers added a jelly-like goo called alginate and stem cells extracted from donor corneas, along with some ropy...
