VMware Cloud on AWS – Managed Service Provider

Image
It has been about a year since VMware Cloud (VMC) on AWS was released to the masses during VMworld 2017, and the buzz is still growing around this service. The initial release seemed to be high in cost and low in feature flexibility at the time, but much has changed in the last year.  VMC … Continue reading VMware Cloud on AWS – Managed Service Provider via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2O6oMfm If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr

Getting Started with StorMagic SvSAN – A Product Review

Image
Getting Started with StorMagic SvSAN - A Product Review Recently, I had the opportunity to try out StorMagic SvSAN in my home lab to see how it stacks up. The following is an introduction to SvSAN, a description of the deployment, testing, testing results and my findings.  What is StorMagic SvSAN 6.2? StorMagic SvSAN provides a Hyperconverged solution that has been designed with the remote office/branch office in mind. Two host nodes with onboard storage can be utilized in a shared storage style deployment in locations where a traditional 3 tiered architecture would prove to be difficult to manage or too cost prohibitive.   SvSAN is vendor agnostic so it can be deployed onto existing infrastructure without the need to acquire additional hardware. The two storage nodes can scale out to support up to 64 compute-only nodes. Licensing is straight forward: perpetual license per pair of clust

Google Maps' location sharing now includes your battery life

Image
When you share your location with a friend through Google Maps, they'll now be able to see how much battery life you have left exactly. Android Police first discovered hints of the new feature in a Google Maps beta for Android earlier this year, and it's been making its way to more and more people's devices since then. Now, it's more widely available -- we can confirm that we were able to access the feature even outside the US. It seems to have made its way to iOS devices, as well. By showing people you trust that your battery's nearly empty, for instance, they won't be as worried in case they can't get in touch with you for the next hour or so. On the other hand, if they know your phone still has a lot of juice left and you're not picking up when you're supposed to be free to talk, then they can take action to make sure tha

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Central Lunar Eclipse

Image
Central Lunar Eclipse Reddened by scattered sunlight, the Moon in the center is passing through the center of Earth's dark umbral shadow in this July 27 lunar eclipse sequence . Left to right the three images are from the start, maximum, and end to 103 minutes of totality from the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century. The longest path the Moon can follow through Earth's shadow does cross the shadow's center, that's what makes such central lunar eclipses long ones . But July 27 was also the date of lunar apogee, and at the most distant part of its elliptical orbit the Moon moves slowest. For the previous lunar eclipse, last January 31, the Moon was near its orbital perigee. Passing just south of the Earth shadow central axis, totality lasted only 76 minutes. Coming up on January 21, 2019, a third consecutive total lunar eclipse will also be off center and find the

Dota 2 Update - August 2nd, 2018

We’ve heard a bunch of complaints from the community after the recent treasure was released, and we wanted to walk you through how things unfolded from our end. On Tuesday after the release, we heard the community being concerned if there were bugs with the item drops, with many examples of people not getting the Witch Doctor set but having the Phantom Assassin and Outworld Devourer sets. We looked into it to see if there were any differences between the drop rates of those items, and found that all three were identical, so we just assumed it was anecdotal cases and selection bias. Another contributing factor is that the volume of Treasure 3 is meaningfully less than Treasure 1 and 2, partly because a lot of customers bought the Weekend Bundle Sale and that did not include Treasure 3 (as is the case historically). So it would then be expected that a number of people would have some items and not the others, and that the Witch Doctor set would be the most rare. However, the complai

Sennheiser's Memory Mic can record audio from afar

Image
Sennheiser has released a Bluetooth mic that gives you a way to make sure your video comes with crisp sounds -- even if you're recording from afar. It says its new device called Memory Mic can record "broadcast quality" audio even if you're shooting the video from a distance with a phone. Say, when you're recording your kid on her first bike ride, when you want to shoot a video of a musician that captures the whole stage or if you're shooting a cooking show for YouTube. The device initially connects to your phone via Bluetooth, but it can apparently continue recording even if you go out of range. Your phone's built-in mic will still pick up ambient sounds for a more accurate representation of your recording conditions, which is great if you want to relive particular moments. The Memory Mic can record and store up to four hours of audi

Motorola confirms it won’t be releasing a Moto Z3 Force version this year

Image
Motorola unveiled its new Moto Z3 handset today at an event in Chicago, and the company announced later on in the afternoon on Twitter that it's breaking with tradition with the third installment in its Z Series. Unlike with the Z2 and the original Moto Z , the Z3 won't be getting a shatterproof Force version — at least not this year. "We will not be launching any more Moto Z's this year," the company's official US Twitter account announced . (There is already a midrange Moto Z3 Play , announced back in June.) There's a number of reasons why Motorola may be shying away from its more durable variant. For one, sales on previous Force devices may be pretty minuscule when compared with the sales of the main Z Series phones. There's also an... Motorola isn't giving up on its smartphone Mods just yet

Image
Not long before the second-generation Moto Z flagship was released, Motorola made a clear promise: its Moto Mod accessories would absolutely work for three generations of devices . With the Z3 Play and Z3 officially out there now, that's three generations accounted for -- the company made good on its word. As a result, some -- myself included -- sort of assumed that Moto would give up on its Mods entirely once that obligation had been met. Not true, as it turns out. Gaurang Telang, Motorola's product manager for Flagships and Innovation, confirmed to Engadget that the 5G Mod "won't be the last Mod," and that Moto Mods would "absolutely" continue to be part of the brand's mobile strategy for the foreseeable future. No one I spoke to was willing to make definitive statements on how frequently Motorola would release new Mod accessorie

Researchers use Google Glass to help kids with autism

Image
We haven't heard from Google Glass since its newer, sleeker version came out in July 2017 with a focus on assisting in the workplace. But scientists have found another application for the search giant's augmented reality glasses: Helping autistic children navigate social situations. Autism is a developmental disorder that hinders a person's ability to communicate with others. According to a report published in the journal npj Digital Medicine , the researchers developed a therapy routine pairing Google Glass with facial recognition software that notifies the device wearer on which emotions people are expressing. In the pilot trial, 14 children with autism spectrum disorder used the system at home. The idea: Help kids develop social skills while they're young to improve their social development during their formative years and into later life. Twel
