VMworld 2018 US Recap

Image
This article is currently still undergoing revisions/additions. My VMworld experience Once again, I had a wonderful week, and still managed to squeeze in the time to record 10 vendor visit videos , with a focus on what pertains to the home lab enthusiast. I'm also happy that playback of my VMTN TechTalk with vBrownBag is also now available here , entitled "Paul Braren - What you need to know about running VMware with U.2, M.2, M.3, and PCIe NVMe SSDs". Like last year, I found it a bit challenging to actually do a live demo in a shared space with many guests nearby for various activities, so instead I focused on showing the physical gear to those who stopped by, along with discussing a variety of tech topics. For folks looking for a software demo of what you can do with a home lab like mine, using the equipment that I had brought with me to VMworld, it's still avail

Netflix and Amazon will have to make more European content by law

Image
Streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video will likely soon have to ensure at least 30 percent of their libraries are dedicated to local content in the European Union . A preliminary agreement on the rules is already in place, and Roberto Viola, who oversees the European Commission department in ch arge of networks, content and technology, said the quota is set to become law in December. He indicated to Variety that the vote is "a mere formality." The streaming companies will have to commission European-made shows and movies, buy them or contribute to national film funds. The services will also likely have to make sure the local content has prominent placement in their libraries. Once the measures are enshrined in law, EU countries will have 20 months to apply them, and Viola noted that member states can opt to increase their individual qu

VMware – Clone a VM with snapshots (and consolidate it)

Image
Recently we had a weird issue in our office. We had one virtual machine with a snapshot. That by itself isn't an issue, a snapshot is nothing special. But someone created that snapshot before a software upgrade and forget to delete it. So this snapshot was growing and growing. We found out that there is ... VMware finally announces SRM support for VVols!

Image
VMware's new storage architecture, Virtual Volumes (VVols), has been part of vSphere for over 3 years starting with the vSphere 6.0 release. However the initial release did not support array based replication which VMware eventually provided in vSphere 6.5. That support came with a caveat though, while replication was supported via Storage Policy Based Management … Continue reading » [[ This is a content summary only. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 photo confirms 5G support

Image
Last week Xiaomi showed off a render of the upcoming Mi Mix 3 flagship that revealed its notch-dodging slider mechanism, and now product management director Donovan Sung has followed up with a photo confirming another feature: 5G support. The phone is set to be launched in October, far earlier than any 5G networks are going to be up and running, but Sung says the company "can't wait for the official rollout of 5G next year." As for what we can expect from Xiaomi's precise implementation of 5G, Sung cites download speeds that are "more than 10x faster than 4G speeds," which isn't much to go on given the huge variation in 4G technologies. The photo shows the Mi Mix 3 using various bands at a test facility, including one LTE connection... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2CcOrC7

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Moon behind Lava Fountain

Image
Moon behind Lava Fountain What's happened to the Moon? Nothing, but something has happened to the image of the Moon. The heat from a volcanic lava fountain in the foreground has warmed and made turbulent the air nearby, causing passing light to refract differently than usual. The result is a lava plume that appears to be melting the Moon. The featured picture was taken as the full Sturgeon Moon was setting behind Mt. Etna as it erupted in It aly about one week ago. The picture is actually a composite of two images, one taken right after the other, with the same camera and lens. The first image was a quick exposure to capture details of the setting Moon, while the second exposure , taken after the Moon set a few minutes later, was longer so as to capture details of the faint lava jets. From our Earth, we can only see the Sun , Moon , planets, and stars as they appear thr

Sound-based liquid printing could lead to new designer drugs

Image
Liquid printing is virtually ubiquitous thanks to inkjets , but the materials can only be so sluggish before it stops working. What if you wanted to print a biological material, or even liquid metal? That might happen soon. Harvard researchers have developed a technique that uses acoustic levitation to print droplets of materials that wouldn't normally be so accommodating, including metal and honey. The approach uses a subwavelength acoustic resonator to create a sound field that pulls substances from the printer nozzle at over 100G -- even some of the most viscous materials can't resist that tug. You can control the size of the droplets using the amplitude of the soundwaves, and place them anywhere you like. Despite the seeming violence, the system (known as "acoustophoretic" printing) is safe to use with living biological material as the soundwav
