Microsoft launches new Windows Collaboration Displays to make meeting rooms smarter

Image
Microsoft is launching a new type of conference room display at Computex this week. While the software giant manufactures its own Surface Hub , its partnering with other display makers to create Windows Collaboration Displays. The displays simply hook up to existing Windows 10 PCs in businesses, and include built-in sensors that connect to Microsoft's new Azure IoT spatial intelligence features. The sensors will detect presence in a room, so they could let a businesses improve how a room is heated or cooled, and to more efficiently manage room-booking systems. The displays are high resolution, multi-touch, and support stylus input just like you'd find on a Surface Hub. Microsoft is even certifying that the displays have far-field... Windows Collaboration Displays are like Surface Hubs from other brands

Image
The Surface Hub family is getting some distant cousins. At Computex today, Microsoft announced Windows Collaboration Displays -- big screen group working devices from other manufacturers. They're focused on Microsoft 365 tools like Office, Whiteboard and Teams. They also feature sensors that tie into Microsoft's Azure Internet of Things spatial recognition, allowing them to collect environmental data. It's unclear how they'll co-exist with the Surface Hub devices, especially since it seems like they'll offer much of the same functionality. Sharp and Avocor will launch the first Collaboration Displays later this year, but unfortunately we're still waiting on more details about pricing, as well as how these devices will actually work. Facebook's on-device data sharing program included Huawei, Lenovo

Image
After a New York Times report highlighted how Facebook provided 60 or so device manufacturers access to user data , today the NYT and Washington Post report that four Chinese manufacturers are on the list. Huawei, Lenovo, Oppo and TCL all had integrations that Facebook exec Francisco Varela told the NYT : "were controlled from the get-go — and Facebook approved everything that was built." Huawei, in particular, has been raised for scrutiny by several lawmakers, who worry that the Chinese government could demand access to data on its servers. Earlier this year, the FBI, CIA and NSA warned against use of the company's products or services , citing a potential capacity for "undetected espionage." Facebook has not listed all of the companies included in these agreements -- Apple is not included -- which it said it has been "winding down&quo

Astronomy Picture of the Day: A Sun Pillar over Norway

Image
A Sun Pillar over Norway Have you ever seen a sun pillar ? When the air is cold and the Sun is rising or setting , falling ice crystals can reflect sunlight and create an unusual column of light. Ice sometimes forms flat, six-sided shaped crystals as it falls from high-level clouds . Air resistance causes these crystals to lie nearly flat much of the time as they flutter to the ground. Sunlight reflects off crystals that are properly aligned , creating the sun- sun-pillar effect. In the featured picture taken last week, a sun-pillar reflects light from a Sun setting over Fensf jorden , Norway .
