Autonomous drones can herd birds away from airports

Image
Drones aren't usually allowed to go near airports unless they serve a purpose, like herding flocks of birds away from the airspace where they could put planes full of people in jeopardy. Manually controlled drones can be unreliable, though: If the operator gets too aggressive and spooks the birds, the flock could scatter and become even more unmanageable. That's why a team of researchers from Caltech have developed an algorithm that teaches unmanned aerial vehicles how to autonomously (and effectively) herd birds away from airport airspace. The engineers said they were inspired by the 2009 US Airways Flight 1549 incident that came to be known as "Miracle on the Hudson." After taking off from LaGuardia, the plane struck a flock of geese and lost all engine power. The only reason it didn't crash was because the pilots were highly skilled and were

IDC: VMware Leads Market in IT Automation and Configuration Management Software

Qualcomm invites us to see its new Wear OS chip on September 10th

Image
Even as wearable devices have become more popular, the hardware backing many Android Wear / Wear OS devices hasn't seen a significant update since Qualcomm's 2100 SOC arrived in 2016 . Now, as promised, a new chip will be unveiled later this year, and this afternoon Qualcomm invited journalists to a reveal event scheduled for September 10th. The invite only had a small smartwatch diagram and the words "It's Time," but an interview with exec Pankaj Kedia already gave us some ideas about what to expect. The new hardware will be built from the ground up for a wearable device, instead of trying to shrink smartphone technology, and should improve battery life. Plus, it will allow for smaller devices so that everyone can enjoy a more stylish look. via Engadget RSS Feed https://ift.tt/2LY5E6F

Qualcomm’s overdue smartwatch chip may finally come on September 10th

Image
Time may finally be up for Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear 2100, the venerable yet outdated processor that has served as essentially the only option for WearOS watch manufacturers since it launched two years ago — back when the platform was called Android Wear. Qualcomm has sent out invitations for a September 10th press event focused on smartwatches ( via Android Police ), which would suggest a new wearables-focused chip is on the way. Qualcomm has already said as much, with its head of wearables previously confirming that a new processor and mysterious flagship device will be announced this fall; watches from other manufacturers are set to come by the holidays. The silicon is said to focus on efficiency, as you'd expect, enabling smaller... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2APsTdQ

Seahawks and Mariners fans can buy concessions with their fingerprints

Image
Sports fans in Seattle now have the option of using the biometric services offered by Clear to enter stadiums, buy concessions and verify their age for alcohol purchases. Seahawks and Sounders FC fans will be able to use their fingerprints to get through security lines and to make purchases at certain concession stands at CenturyLink Field. Additionally, while Clear already allowed Mariners fans to use their fingerprints at Safeco Field's security checkpoints, game attende es can now also use Clear at select concession spots. The Seahawks are the first NFL team to partner with Clear. This also marks the first time in the US that biometric data has been approved to replace both IDs for age verification and credit cards for purchases. "Having an excellent and safe fan experience is paramount in everything we do, so we are excited to introduce Clear's innov

Twitter's CEO tries to explain not suspending Alex Jones

Image
Over the last few days, platforms like Apple Podcasts, Facebook, YouTube and Spotify decided they'd had enough of Alex Jones and InfoWars and pulled his access. Twitter was not among them, saying that InfoWars is not "currently violating our policies." Tonight its CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted a thread trying to clarify things, as he occasionally has when explaining changes in its policy or stating once again why some bad actor will be allowed to remain on the platform. The Twitter Safety account also provided information on the company's policy, explaining that while "We prohibit targeted behavior that harasses, threatens, or uses fear to silence others and take action when they violate our policies...If individuals are not targeted (e.g. @ mention, tagged in a photo, etc.), we allow a wide range of content as long as it doesn't cross the line into t

Verizon accused of misleading FCC on rural LTE coverage

Image
Rural carriers have accused Verizon of using shady tricks to hinder its cellular competition. In a letter to the FCC , the Rural Wireless Association accused Verizon of providing the regulator with a "sham coverage map" that distorted the reach of its LTE network in order to deprive competitors of Mobility Fund subsidy money. Big Red said it covered nearly all of the Oklahoma Panhandle in its report to officials, but engineers testing against the FCC's 5Mbps standard estimated that the real coverage area was less than half as large. Tests to verify this coverage for the FCC are expensive, the RWA added. The Oklahoma test alone cost nearly $1 million. Much of that could have been avoided if Verizon hadn't exaggerated coverage, according to the Association. Verizon, unsurprisingly, disputed the allegations. It claimed the engineers' mapp

Now you can disable threaded Gmail conversations for iOS and Android

Image
Google has continued to tweak its Gmail mobile apps to try and make things better for its users. The company introduced AI-powered notifications for iOS, added custom swipe actions for Android and has tweaked its threaded conversation view for years. Search for this latter feature on Google, however, and you'll see a ton of people asking how to disable it. Now Google has made it so you can turn this option off for the Gmail app on iOS and Android. You can turn the view off on the web with a dip into the Settings menu, then toggling "Conversation View" off there. The setting will then carry forward to the Gmail app on your mobile devices as well. While you can't toggle the feature off directly with the app itself, at least this way you can kill a feature if you're one of the folks that hate it. Via: TechCrunch Sour
