Tesla's mobile app can turn on top speed limits from anywhere

Image
If you're a little worried about handing over the keys to your Tesla to a valet, then you might be tempted to engage the car's "Valet Mode," which limits the speed of the car to 70MPH and tops out the power and acceleration to just 25 percent. But that also locks out the glove compartment and the trunk, and access to certain vehicle settings will be disabled. Now, however, Tesla's latest software update will now let you adjust the top speed of your car with a specific speed limiter feature, and directly from your mobile app. According to the update, this speed limiter feature will let you "limit vehicle speed and acceleration with speed limit mode" and that the maximum vehicle speed can be set between 50 to 90 mph. So if you're concerned about little Timmy Junior putting the pedal to metal but you don't want to go full Valet Mode on h

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Northern Lights and Noctilucent Clouds

Image
Northern Lights and Noctilucent Clouds Skies after the near-solstice sunset on June 17 are reflected in this calm lake. The tranquil twilight scene was captured near Bashaw, Alberta, Canada, northern planet Earth. Usually spotted at high latitudes in summer months, night shining or noctilucent clouds hang just above the horizon, transfusing light into a darker sky. Near the edge of space, the icy apparitions are condensations on meteoric dust or volcanic ash still in sunlight at extreme altitudes. Also near the edge of space on this short northern night, solar activity triggered the lovely apparition of aurora borealis or northern lights. Facebook redirects would-be opioid buyers to crisis helpline

Image
Anyone trying to buy opioids or seeking addiction treatment through Facebook should now instead see information for a federal crisis helpline. Facebook has worked with a policy team on the measure over the last few months, according to Stat . Next week , the Food and Drug Administration is holding a summit on opioids; it's invited Fa cebook, Twitter, Google and other tech companies to discuss how they're stemming drug use. When anyone tries to buy drugs (or find addiction treatment) through Facebook search, a message will appear at the top of the results asking if they'd like assistance to find treatment. If they accept, Facebook will redirect them to information on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration national helpline. Facebook worked with that branch of the Department of Health and Human Services along with recovery advocacy g

'Digital Key' standard uses your phone to unlock your car

Image
You can already use your smartphone as a car key if you own the right vehicle (just ask Tesla Model 3 owners ). There hasn't really been a common standard for it, though, and that has hurt adoption -- you can't guarantee that you'll have phone access if you switch brands, or even individual models. You might soon have a solution. The Car Connectivity Consortium , a mix of major smartphone and automotive brands, has posted a Digital Key 1.0 standard ( PDF ) that will let you download (what else?) a virtual key that can unlock your vehicle, start the engine and even share access with other drivers. Unsurprisingly, the technology focuses on security more than anything else. Your car manufacturer uses an existing trusted system to send the digital key to your phone, which uses close-range NFC to grant access to your ride. You can't just unlock your car

Car2Go's carsharing service expands to Chicago starting July 25th

Image
Carsharing service Car2Go is coming to Chicago July 25th. Residents of the big city can register for free now, and new members will get a $15 credit for doing so. This brings the total number of cities that Car2Go is active in to 24. The service offers a "free-float" model, enabling users to make one-way trips without having to return the vehicle to the same place they picked it up, like other carsharing services do. The per-trip rental covers fuel, parking, insurance and maintenance and you won't have to deal with surge pricing. Available vehicles include the regular blue and white smart cars as well as a fleet of Mercedes-Benz sedans. To sign up for free, Chicago residents can use the code CHI2018 until August 23rd. via Engadget RSS Feed https://ift.tt/2MK7ViH

Ohio test uses drones to monitor highway traffic

Image
Highway traffic monitoring is frequently... less than efficient. Fixed cameras can't catch problems beyond their immediate location, while aircraft are both costly and inevitably have to fly back to a distant base to refuel. These systems may soon get a robotic upgrade, though. Ohio State University is leading a pilot program that will use drones for roadway and traffic monitoring along a 35-mile highway stretch (the Smart Mobility Corridor) between Dublin and East Liberty. The dry run will se e drones feed tracking data to the Ohio Department of Transportation's Traffic Management Center to complement data from existing systems. If there's a traffic-disrupting crash or a washed-out road, this might help spot it sooner. This should also help test the safe use of drones beyond existing FAA rules . It wouldn't be practical to use them for purposes

Westworld’s free Alexa game is like a radio drama crossed with a quiz show

Image
Westworld is known for slipping elaborate story hints into its viral marketing material, giving fans an early look at upcoming plot developments. Westworld: The Maze , a short game released today for Amazon Alexa devices, does the opposite. It's a clever tie-in narrative that draws on players' existing knowledge of Westworld lore — or at least their skill at navigating the Westworld wiki. The Maze follows a voice-controlled "choose your own adventure" format that other Alexa games have used. You play a host who's just beginning to wake up to the nature of Westworld's true reality, thanks to some cryptic advice from a mysterious character in Westworld's Sweetwater saloon. Your goal is to find the center of a metaphorical maze, but to... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2tdbTYL

Microsoft says it’s no longer planning VR support on Xbox

Image
Microsoft has completely pulled back on plans to support virtual reality headsets on the Xbox. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz , Microsoft's chief marketing officer of gaming Mike Nichols said that "we don't have any plans specific to Xbox consoles in virtual reality or mixed reality." Nichols goes on to say that the PC is "probably the best platform" for virtual and mixed reality, and that for the Xbox, "our focus is primarily on experiences you would play on your TV." This basically completes the slow decay of Microsoft's console VR plans, at least for now. In 2016 , Xbox chief Phil Spencer said that the upcoming Project Scorpio console would support "high-end VR" like that available on Windows PCs. Since Microsoft had previously...
