VMware’s Software-Defined Vision

Image
In terms of new product announcements, VMworld 2018 was surprisingly, almost shockingly, quiet. The Day One General Session by CEO Pat Gelsinger had some cool moments, for sure. But there was nothing new announced during the Day Two General Session (which was dominated by an inspiring interview with Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai), and […] The post VMware's Software-Defined Vision appeared first on ActualTech.io . via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2PgMGWc If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr Unsubscribe from these notifications or sign in to manage your Email Applets.

VMworld 2018: Day 3 Recap

Image
Cloud mania continues at VMworld. Some CIOs still seem to think that simply migrating all of their VMs from on-site VMware to VMs in AWS (or some other provider) is going to be easier and save the money. There wasn't any big news today from VMware, so this blog will focus on some conversations in the Druva booth about just […] via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2PeZM6e If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr Unsubscribe from these notifications or sign in to manage your Email Applets.

Powershell: Making a RESTful API endpoint in powershell (kinda like python flask)

Image
Summary: While running scripts interactively and even on a scheduled basis is fine, I wanted to explore the possibility of making my scripts event-driven.  Take the vCheck Health Script for example.  Running that on a schedule is fine, but what if I wanted to run that on-demand?  Or other scripts in general? The cool thing, you can do it all in Powershell Core!  Meaning, docker, linux, macOS, etc.  Basically, you can have this script run on OS startup (pre-populated with your endpoint configs/scripts) and you would have a Powershell driven REST-style API endpoint to run your scripts. Here is the example, feel free to try it.  It'll do nothing of consequence on it's own.  I'll post later with a video on how to use it. via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2PlPTUp

VMware Cross vCenter vMotion migration with separate SSO domains

Image
I recently deployed a new vCenter 6.5 VCSA due to my adoption of a new hyper-converged stretched cluster. Similar to mine, there would be scenarios where you would need to deploy a new vCenter appliance rather than upgrading/migrating an older vCenter server. Now that I have built and configured my new VCSA and configured my […] via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2N04O95 If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr Unsubscribe from these notifications or sign in to manage your Email Applets.

Alexa can order Dunkin' Donuts upon request

Image
Dunkin' Donuts wants to be an even bigger part of your morning routine. The bakery chain is adding voice-ordering via Alexa to its futuristic repertoire . Assuming you're a DD Perks Rewards member and have linked the mobile app with Amazon, you can place your order right after your flash briefing each morning and grab it on your commute. It all sounds pretty simple too. Start by saying, "Alexa, order from Dunkin' Donuts" and then pick from your favorite orders stored within the Dunkin' app. "Alexa, tell Dunkin' Donuts to reorder my last saved favorite," is one way to go about things according to a blog post from the caffeine-and-confection peddler. Is it revolutionary? Not exactly, but hey, placing an order for a glazed sour cream and black iced coffee by voice before leaving the house is the type of future I can get beh

Samsung’s first 8K TV goes on sale next month

Image
Samsung is announcing its first commercial 8K TV, the Q900R, at IFA 2018 this week. The QLED panel will be available in 65-inch, 75-inch, 82-inch, and 85-inch sizes, and is capable of peak brightness of 4,000 nits. It also supports the newer HDR10+ format backed by Samsung and Amazon. Given that there is basically zero content available to watch in 8K, Samsung is leaning on upscaling technology for now. The company claims that the Q900R's "8K AI Upscaling" feature uses artificial intelligence and a dedicated processor to bring images up "to a level compatible with 8K regardless of the original source quality or format," which sounds somewhat optimistic. The Q900R will go on sale in at least some markets at the end of September, though... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2LECjcy

Astronomy Picture of the Day: The NGC 6914 Complex

Image
The NGC 6914 Complex A study in contrasts, this colorful skyscape features stars, dust, and glowing gas in the vicinity of NGC 6914. The complex of reflection nebulae lies some 6,000 light-years away, toward the high-flying northern constellation Cygnus and the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy. Obscuring interstellar dust clouds appear in silhouette while reddish hydrogen emission nebulae , along with the dusty blue reflection nebulae , fill the cosmic canvas. Ultraviolet radiation from the massive, hot, young stars of the extensive Cygnus OB2 association ionize the region 's atomic hydrogen gas , producing the characteristic red glow as protons and electrons recombine. Embedded Cygnus OB2 stars also provide the blue starlight strongly reflected by the dust clouds. The nearly 1 degree wide telescopic field of view spans about 100 light-years at the estimated distance of NGC 6914.

EA donates $1 million to support victims of the shooting in Jacksonville

Image
As a part of its ongoing response to the shooting at a Madden Classic esports event on Sunday, EA has established a fund to support victims of the incident, including the families of Taylor Robertson and Elijah Clayton, the two competitors who were killed. The company kicked in $1 million and said it is "working" to set up a fund where others can contribute. While news on that should be available soon, it set a date for a Jacksonville Tribute Livestream on September 6th, citing those in the community that have asked for a way to provide support and "show that this horrific event will not define us, but only serve to make our community stronger." pic.twitter.com/WL9dP62AtB — Electronic Arts (@EA) August 30, 2018 Source: EA via Engadget RSS Feed https://ift.tt/2Pjmytv

Nikon's D3500 is a compact DSLR for beginners

Image
Nikon may have revealed its biggest (and worst kept) secret of the year last week, when it finally introduced the Z6 and Z7 full-frame mirrorless cameras . But those shooters are geared toward prosumers and not exactly the beginner crowd. The D3500 DSLR, however, is very much designed for people looking for an entry-level camera -- one more powerful than a point-and-shoot, yet portable enough to carry around without much effort. It comes with a 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor (DX-format) and a revamped Expeed image processor that, Nikon says, is intended to capture sharper details and more vivid colors than its predecessor, the D3400 . Additionally, the new D3500 sports an 11-point autofocus system, 100-25,600 ISO range and the ability to share images wirelessly via Nikon's SnapBridge feature. According to Nikon, it can also take approximately 1,550 shots on a singl

Audio-Technica is the latest to debut true wireless earbuds

Image
Just because Audio-Technica is better known for its wired headphones doesn't mean you'll have to look elsewhere if you want high-quality sound without cables. The brand has unveiled its first all-wireless in-ear headphones, the catchily-named ATH-CKR7TW. They tout the familiar oversized earbud design you've seen from established rivals but put a focus on (surprise!) fidelity above the smart features you sometimes get elsewhere. Each bud includes an 11mm driver with a carbon-coated diaphragm that reportedly provides fast response times and a minimum of distortion, while brass stabilizers and a steel-mesh resistor promise to respectively cut back on resonance and improve high-frequency responses. You can also count on aptX, AAC and SBC wireless audio codecs minimizing the compression effects you sometimes hear with wireless audio, and Bluetooth 5.0 should he

Google refutes Trump accusation over State of the Union links

Image
After earlier tweeting, deleting and re-posting unsupported claims that Google is "suppressing voices of Conservatives," this afternoon the President's personal Twitter account posted a new attack video . It claimed that the company failed to promote his State of the Union address with a link on its homepage after doing so for President Barack Obama, but several things about it don't hold up. In a statement to the media, Google explained that isn't quite true, since a President's first address to Congress (like Donald Trump's this year) is not technically a State of the Union address, and explained that it did not promote Obama's speech in 2009 or Trump's in 2017. While the video claimed that it did not post a link for the 2018 speech, Google said it did. Buzzfeed News points to a Reddit post in the pro-Trump The_Donald section co
