Astronomy Picture of the Day: Trapezium: At the Heart of Orion

Image
Trapezium: At the Heart of Orion Near the center of this sharp cosmic portrait , at the heart of the Orion Nebula , are four hot, massive stars known as the Trapezium . Gathered within a region about 1.5 light-years in radius, they dominate the core of the dense Orion Nebula Star Cluster. Ultraviolet ionizing radiation from the Trapezium stars , mostly from the brightest star Theta-1 Orionis C powers the complex star forming region's entire visible glow. About three million years old, the Orion Nebula Cluster was even more compact in its younger years and a recent dynamical study indicates that runaway stellar collisions at an earlier age may have formed a black hole with more than 100 times the mass of the Sun . The presence of a black hole within the cluster could explain the observed high velocities of the Trapezium stars . The Orion Nebula's distance of some 1,500 light-y

Hydrus VR camera brings immersive 8K video to the deep sea

Image
Don't be surprised if you soon see VR video from some of the darker corners of the ocean . Marine Imaging Technologies has launched a new camera, the Hydrus VR, that promises 360-degree 8K video (higher-resolution than many current headsets) at depths of up to 984 feet, even in lighting conditions as dim as 0.004 lux. The 10-camera array takes advantage of new ultra-sensitive Sony sensors to capture video at up to ISO 409,600 -- the result will be noisy, but might be the key to spotting an elusive fish hiding in a cave. The system is also helpful for undersea movie makers willing to wait to get the perfect shot. It normally has enough battery power and storage to record two hours of footage, but a subsea control module can extend that capture time to eight hours. You can integrate it with robotic vehicles to keep humans far away from the action. Marine Imag

Arlo outage knocks security cameras offline

Image
Arlo security camera owners haven't had the most reliable coverage this weekend. The Netgear-linked brand has confirmed a service outage that knocked many cameras offline starting in the late afternoon on August 4th. Customers faced "intermittent login errors" that either prevented them from signing in or wouldn't let them watch motion detection recordings. Others couldn't watch live streams or connect in the first place. The outage appears to have run for a few hours as of this writing. It's not the first outage in recent months. However, Downdetector data suggests this was severe compared to past incidents, which tended to either be brief or affect a relatively small number of camera owners. We've asked Arlo if it can shed more light on the downtime. With that in mind, the failure is a reminder that cloud-based cameras are only as

Venezuela says Maduro was target of attempted drone attack

Image
Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro may be the first major leader to have faced a drone-based assassination attempt. Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez claimed that at least one bomb-laden drone had exploded close to Maduro while he was giving a speech at a Caracas event on August 4th. The authoritarian leader was unhurt in the incident, but seven National Guard soldiers were reportedly injured. Video from state TV showed Maduro and officials looking up in a moment of panic before the camera cut away, with the assembled troops running soon afterward. The country has seen mounting unrest over recent years due to both Maduro's anti-democratic policies and an economic collapse triggered in part by plummeting oil prices. There were two attacks against government facilities in 2017, but neither involved drones. Footage of the attack itself wasn't available

India may tell companies to store cloud data inside the country

Image
India might be the next country to insist that internet companies store users' data inside its borders . Reuters has learned that a government cloud policy panel wants locally-generated data (including i nfo about Indians) to be stored on servers within the country. The move would ostensibly make it easier for law enforcement and intelligence agencies to access data in the midst of investigations. "Data sovereignty" was important in light of "cross-border data flows," according to a draft report recommending the move. The leader of the panel, Infosys' Kris Gopalakrishnan, didn't comment on the recommendation. However, he acknowledged plans to submit the report to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology between the end of August and September 15th. As with similar moves by China and Russia, the demand would raise

Picard returns to 'Star Trek' in a new series for CBS All Access

Image
CBS is banking on more Star Trek shows as a way to draw in more viewers, and it's clearly ready to pull out all the stops in the process. The network has confirmed that it's launching an All Access series that will continue the story of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Jean-Luc Picard -- and yes, it will star Patrick Stewart. Discovery co-creator Alex Kurtzman will oversee the new show with help from other veterans from All Access' inaugural Star Trek show. There's virtually nothing else known about the show, including its basic plot or release date. This appears more to quell rumors (which have been swirling for months) and build hype than anything else. It's far from shocking that CBS would unveil Picard's new tale so soon. Discovery has clearly been the tent pole for All Access, earning a second season and a spin-off Short T

The 2018 'Overwatch' Summer Games begin August 9th

Image
The Overwatch Summer Games is coming back for the third year and is scheduled to begin on August 9th. True to its name, the annual Games features summer-themed events within Overwatch , including the soccer-inspired 3v3 brawl Lúcioball. If previous Lúcioball arenas were based in Rio de Janeiro and Sydney, it looks like Blizzard is taking us to Asia this time -- to Busan, Korea, in particular. Not surprising considering the game's rising popularity in the country, where one of the first instances of Overwatch match fixing took place . You'll get a kick out of this! ⚽ Team up with your friends for Summer Games on August 9. pic.twitter.com/VSyxMDTrc3 — Overwatch (@PlayOverwatch) August 3, 2018 Make a splash with WAVERACER https://t.co/JW0Aei8tV0 (Legendary)! 🌊 Join us in Busan for Summer Games, kicking off August 9. pic.twitter.com/0IO0BK

Chip giant TSMC struggles with virus infections at its factories

Image
Many of the tech products launching this fall might have just run into production setbacks. Giant chip manufacturer TSMC has warned that several of its fabrication plants suffered virus infections on August 3rd, disrupting production. Some of these plants recovered in a "short period of time," it said, but others wouldn't resume business as usual for "one day." The company dismissed claim s that this was a hack, but didn't initially provide details about the virus or the potential infection path. TSMC promised more information on August 6th. A lost day of production might not sound like much, but it could be huge depending on the circumstances. TSMC builds chips for many of the industry's biggest names, including Apple, AMD, NVIDIA and Qualcomm. Even a 24-hour disruption might cause device shortages, however brief, and this m

iPhone supplier TSMC shut down factories after virus attack

Image
Chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. shut down several of its factories last night after it its systems were hit by a computer virus, reports Bloomberg . TSMC is the largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world, and supplies components for companies like ADM, Apple, Nvidia, and Qualcomm. The company told Bloomberg that the virus infected a "number of its fabrication tools," but that the "degree of infection varies" from factory to factory. Several have resumed their operations, but others won't come back online until tomorrow. The company indicated that its factories weren't infected by a hacker. This is the first time the company's production lines have been affected by a virus "TSMC has been attacked by viruses before,"... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2AH
