The Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has a giant screen and a battery to match

Image
Xiaomi has announced the Mi Max 3, the latest and biggest yet in its line of colossal phones. This time around the screen is 6.9 inches, and Xiaomi is using an 18:9 screen for the first time in the series. Top and bottom bezels are present, though pretty thin in relation to the vast expanse of the screen. The resolution is 1080p, so you'll probably be able to make out pixels, but that's not likely to be a huge concern for users that want something like this as a primary video device. Powering all this is a 5,500mAh battery, which Xiaomi has managed to cram into a 7mm-thick chassis. The company says it can be charged to 71 percent in one hour. Other specs include a 12-megapixel plus 5-megapixel dual-camera system, a Snapdragon 636... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2zQTCX3

Fujifilm’s XF10 is a small compact camera with a big sensor

Image
Fujifilm has announced the XF10, a new fixed-lens compact camera that will serve as the successor to 2016's X70 . Like the X70, it pairs an 18.5mm (28mm-equivalent) f/2.8 lens with a large APS-C sensor in a small, pocketable body. The XF10 ups the resolution to 24 megapixels and is capable of 4K video (albeit only at 15 frames per second). There's still a touchscreen, but the XF10 also now has the focus point selection joystick as seen on other Fujifilm cameras. The weight has been cut from 340g (0.75lbs) to 280g (0.62lbs). The XF10 isn't quite a straight upgrade to the X70, however, and owners of the older camera may miss several features on the newer model. There's no tilt screen, flash hotshoe, or aperture ring on the XF10, and the... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2LsyeIR

Terrafugia's first flying car should finally go on sale in 2019

Image
Terrafugia's Transition flying car has been in development purgatory for years , but it's finally here... almost. The company has announced that the first production models of the Transition will go on sale sometime in 2019. While that does sound like a long way off, it does provide a more concrete release window than you've had in the past. And if it's any consolation, the finished machine will have some useful improvements in return for the extra months of waiting. For one, the Transition now drives in hybrid mode with a combination of a conventional gas-powered motor and a safer-than-usual lithium-ion phosphate battery. The throttle now includes a boost option for a brief burst of extra power. Partners Dynon and BRS are providing avionics and a parachute system, while the interior is getting improved seats, an "attractive and intuitive&quo

Fujifilm's oddball XF10 fixed-lens camera costs only $500

Image
Fujifilm has proven again that it's not afraid to build unusual cameras by launching the XF10, a premium fixed-lens compact. It's got an 18.5mm f/2.8 fixed lens (equivalent to 27.8mm in full-frame terms) and a 24.2-megapixel APS-C (not X-Trans) sensor. It's very compact, weighing just 280 grams, or about the same as Sony's new RX100 VI, which has a smaller 1-inch sensor. However, there's no EVF on it, so you'll need to rely on the 3-inch touchscreen to compose and replay your photos and video. The XF10 is essentially a 1080p 60fps camera, as it does shoot 4K but at a rather useless 15 fps. The ISO ranges from 200 to 12,800, expandable from ISO 100 - 51,200, and it supports Bluetooth 4.1 for smartphone transfers. There's a digital zoom available (essentially a sensor crop) that lets you shoot at 35mm and 50mm equivalent levels. As you'd e

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Cerealia Facula

Image
Cerealia Facula Cerealia Facula, also known as the brightest spot on Ceres , is shown in this stunning mosaic close-up view. The high-resolution image data was recorded by the Dawn spacecraft, in a looping orbit, from altitudes as low as 34 kilometers (21 miles) above the dwarf planet's surface . Cerealia Facula is about 15 kilometers wide, found in the center of 90 kilometer diameter Occator crater . Like the other bright spots (faculae) scattered around Ceres, Cerealia Facula is not ice, but an exposed salty residue with a reflectivity like dirty snow. The residue is thought to be mostly sodium carbonate and ammonium chloride from a slushy brine within or below the dwarf planet's crust. Driven by advanced ion propulsion on an 11-year mission, Dawn explored main-belt asteriod Vesta before traveling on to Ceres. But sometime between this August and October, the interplanetary

Duolingo launches Hindi language course for English speakers

Image
Today, Duolingo's Hindi language course for English speakers officially launched on its website. The course is not yet available on iOS or Android apps, but it will be making its way to these devices in the future. The course has been in development for over a year; Kanan Gupta is the lead creator. Hindi is the second-most spoken language around the world, according to The Washington Post , with almost 600 million speakers as of 2015. India is one of Duolingo's top 10 markets worldwide, with 10.1 million domestic users, so launching a Hindi course makes sense for the company. There are roughly 8.6 million Hindi speakers learning English through Duolingo. Over 154,000 people have signed up to be notified when a Hindi-language course for English users is available on the service. This is clearly going to be popular among Duolingo's user base . Many of Ind

Hyperloop TT will build a test track in China

Image
The Hyperloop race is much of a political battle as it is a technical one, with companies grabbing territory like players starting a game of Risk. Hyperloop Transportation Technologies , the crowdsourced enterprise that has l agged behind rivals in some respects , may have scored a crucial victory. The company has signed a deal to build a test track in the Chinese province of Guizhou, home to the Guiyang Technological Development Zone. The route itself will be located somewhere in Tongren, a prefecture in eastern Guizhou, and will cover an initial distance of 10 km (6.2 miles). There's no indication of if the line will connect two significant landmarks or areas, at least not at this early stage. At that short distance, it's not likely that the tube will be able to reach the speeds that Hyperloop promises , at least on paper. As part of the deal, HTT will la

VR standard promises an end to headset connector headaches

Image
If you've used a wired VR headset, you probably know the connector situation is inconsistent and messy: you frequently have to plug multiple cables into your PC, which is space consuming at best and potentially impractical if you have a laptop. That might not be quite such a thorn in your side if a handful of tech industry leaders have their way. AMD, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oculus and Valve have unveiled VirtualLink, an open stand ard that would whittle VR headset connections down to a single USB-C cable. It would take advantage of the newer port format to deliver four lanes of DisplayPort video, USB data (for cameras and sensors) and 27W of power. It's optimized for VR, too, promising low lag and a highly optimized path that would enable the "next generation" of headsets. The technology is very young. The VirtualLink alliance has only published an

Spotify users still can't block followers, but that could change

Image
Spotify isn't as much of a haven from harassment as many might like. Since the service shares your plays with followers by default, it's possible for harassers to keep up with your listening habits and exploit that to their advantage (say, by finding out when you're in a sad mood). The company has remained quiet on the prospect of a blocking feature in response to this, but it now appears to be more receptive to the idea. BuzzFeed News has discovered that Spotify recently labeled a years-old request for a user blocking feature as a "good idea." It's not on the company's "current" roadmap, according to the notice, but that's a distinct improvement from the approach so far. Don't count on it coming in the near future. In a statement, Spotify said it "does not have any timeline on plans for a block feature.&quo
