Amazon’s Alexa can now set DVR recordings

Image
Alexa’s ability to control DVRs is going to improve in the near future. Amazon announced today that it’s updated its Video Skill API so that Alexa can now start recordings, launch an app, or carry out playback commands. Multiple set-top box makers already have Alexa skills, including Dish, Verizon, TiVo, and DirecTV. They’ll be updating their skills, Amazon says, and some have already been experimenting with these new features. Users will be able to say things like, “Alexa, record the Cubs game,” and the set-top box will plan a recording. They’ll also be able to tell the assistant to launch specific apps or services, like, “Alexa, launch Netflix.” Finally, they’ll be able to say, “Alexa, pause,” without having to explicitly name their... China busts iPhone smugglers who used drones to get them into Shenzhen

Image
China customs officials have taken down smugglers who used drones to carry iPhones from Hong Kong into Shenzhen. They managed to transport 500 million yuan ($79.8 million) worth of refurbished iPhones before the operation was busted, according to Reuters . Under the cover of dark, the group of 26 used the unspecified drones to “fly two 200-meter (660-feet) cables between Hong Kong and the mainland.” From there, they loaded around 10 iPhones into small bags and sent each across the cable system. The smugglers could move up to 15,000 iPhones each night, so they managed to get things running pretty efficiently. The local, state-owned Legal Daily reported this to be “the first case found in China that drones were being used in cross-border... MacOS officially gains support for external GPUs

Image
Last June, Apple announced that it would add support for external GPUs to macOS. And now, just under a year later, official support has arrived. With the latest update to macOS High Sierra, you’ll be able to connect a number of different graphics cards to the Mac through a Thunderbolt 3 port and use that additional power to speed up demanding processes, including games and video editing. Apple has specifically highlighted its use for VR. This probably shouldn’t surprise anyone since it’s Apple we’re talking about here, but there are a number of limitations around what you can do with external GPUs. For one, only select models are officially supported. And, surprise, Apple is only supporting some of AMD’s Radeon cards, which it already... Huawei says it isn’t giving up on the US market anytime soon

Image
In an email to CNET , the CEO of Huawei’s consumer business group, Richard Yu, has said that the company isn’t pulling out of the US market, despite every major carrier refusing to sell its phones, and retailers like Best Buy recently dropping the brand . “We are committed to the US market and to earning the trust of US consumers by staying focused on delivering world-class products and innovation,” Yu told CNET in an email. “We would never compromise that trust.” Earning that trust — with consumers, corporations, and government agencies alike — for Huawei will likely be an uphill battle as its faced several blows while trying to create inroads with the US market. Earlier this year, the heads of six US intelligence agencies, including the... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2uCbsKO"

Teachers weigh in on Apple’s push for more iPads in school

Image
This week, Apple held its education event to introduce a new iPad with stylus support aimed at teachers and students, hoping to take on the popularity of Chromebooks in classrooms over the past few years. As of 2017, Apple is third behind Google and Microsoft in terms of laptops, tablets, and other mobile devices shipped to schools, with sales to schools steadily declining since 2013. To combat this drop, Apple showed off an “affordable” iPad this week at an event held at Lane Tech College Prep, a public high school in Chicago. “We price things as low as we can,” Apple CEO Tim Cook told Recode’s Kara Swisher in a post-event interview. “We took an iPad, put iPad Pro features in it and charge $299. And the software is all free and the... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2E7kOO4"

The first Android Go phone in the US is now available for $80

Image
ZTE is the first company to bring a smartphone running Android Go to the US. As spotted by Android Police , ZTE’s Tempo Go is now available to buy online for $79.99. The phone is not much to look at. It has a 5-inch screen with a low, 480 x 854 resolution, big bezels, only 1GB of RAM, and a tiny 8GB of storage. But that’s all to be expected: Android Go is designed for phones with this kind of limited hardware. It takes up less space, and it runs better than normal Android would on phones with small amounts of RAM. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll run great , but it should improve the experience you’d get from buying such an inexpensive phone. ZTE was one of the first six companies to announce phones running Android Go last month.... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2GWCxL8"

Android Oreo update for Galaxy Note 8 begins rolling out in US

Image
Android Oreo is starting to arrive on some Galaxy Note 8s in the US. Reports from Droid Life indicate that some Note 8 owners with phones on AT&T and Verizon are beginning to see the update. Android Authority also spotted a few of its commenters saying they’d received the update on Sprint, as well. People on Reddit’s r/GalaxyNote8 community have also reported receiving the update on those three carriers. The updates may not be completely widespread just yet. Phone carriers tend to roll out major software updates like this very slowly at first, to make sure that they can catch any problems early. Samsung, for instance, pulled an international Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 last month after it was found to be causing random restarts in some... Microsoft is ready for a world beyond Windows

Image
”We want to move from people needing Windows to choosing Windows, to loving Windows. That is our bold goal,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella three years ago. At the time, Microsoft was unveiling more details about Windows 10, and surprising people with technologies like the HoloLens headset. It was an exciting time of opportunity and optimism that had Microsoft betting on people loving Windows so much that Windows 10 would be running on 1 billion devices within three years. Neither wager worked out — which is fine, because Windows as we know it is no longer critical to Microsoft’s future success. Microsoft announced a new reorganization yesterday. It’s the fourth major shuffle inside the company over the past five years, and the most... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2uyVNf7"

This puking robot has a purpose: making rocket fuel safely

Image
You won’t be surprised to hear it, but rocket fuel is dangerous stuff. It’s potent and volatile, meaning it can explode before it even gets into the rocket. That makes manufacturing it tricky, as you need to mix together certain materials, but fling them around too hard and they’ll start doing their job early. The solution? Well, scientists from Japan suggest puking robots. In the video above (spotted by IEEE Spectrum ) you can see prototype apparatus designed by engineers from Chuo University and Japan’s national aerospace agency (JAXA) to mix solid rocket fuel. It’s basically a series of connected segments of tube that compress back and forth like a worm. This motion mimics how our intestines and esophagus move food around our body — a... Here are the internal Facebook posts of employees discussing today’s leaked memo

Image
The publication of a June 2016 memo describing the consequences of Facebook’s growth-at-all-costs triggered an emotional conversation at the company today. An internal post reacting to the memo found employees angry and heartbroken that their teammates were sharing internal company discussions with the media. Many called on the company to step up its war on leakers and hire employees with more “integrity.” On Thursday evening, BuzzFeed published a memo from Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, a vice president at Facebook who currently leads its hardware efforts. In the memo, Bosworth says that the company’s core function is to connect people, despite consequences that he repeatedly called “ugly.” “That’s why all the work we do in growth is justified....
