Changes in the Performance Service for vSAN 6.7

Image
The new Clarity based HTML5 user interface (UI) that VMware has adopted across its product portfolio has been a big win for new and existing customers. Since the debut of the new vCenter client in vSphere and vSAN 6.7, it has been quite common to hear from users who have made the transition on how The post Changes in the Performance Service for vSAN 6.7 appeared first on Virtual Blocks . via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2zfQR14 If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr

Astronomy Picture of the Day: A Northern Summer s Night

Image
A Northern Summer s Night Near a summer's midnight a mist haunts the river bank in this dreamlike skyscape taken on July 3rd from northern Denmark. Reddened light from the Sun a little below the horizon gives an eerie tint to low hanging clouds. Formed near the edge of space, the silvery apparitions above them are noctilucent or night shining clouds. The icy condensations on meteoric dust or volcanic ash are still in full sunlight at the extreme altitudes of the mesophere . Usually seen at high latitudes in summer months, wide spread displays of the noctilucent clouds are now being reported. Gigapixel timelapse captures a day in the life of London

Image
There's a real chance you've seen gigapixel city shots before, but they've rarely had a dynamic element -- you've had to be content with that one sliver of time. Now, there's something a little livelier. Lenstore, Nikon and Canary Wharf have partnered on what they say is the first gigapixel timelapse, 24 Hour London . As the name implies, the project provides 7.3-gigapixel snapshots of the city for every hour of the day -- you can see how the roads come to life in the day, or how Tower Bridge illuminates the night. The trick, unsurprisingly, revolves around some robotics. The camera and lens are off-the-shelf parts: a Nikon D850 (whose 45-megapixel stills no helped with detail) and an AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 lens. It's the machinery around the camera that matters the most. The team used robotic motion control of the sort movie studios use

MoviePass (was) down and out on a summer Friday night

Image
For the past couple of hours MoviePass was experiencing an outage on a Friday night in the summer. It also happens to be the hottest day so far this year in many parts of the country and would otherwise be a perfect time to hit air-conditioned theaters. That's not a good look for a service that just introduced " surge " prices for popular films days after filing with the SEC to sell off up to $1.2 billion in equity and debt securities to raise funds. MoviePass' Twitter account is recommending people wait before going to the theater, but if you absolutely have to go and can't log in, then buy a ticket and the company will reimburse you. Seriously. Users are welcome to purchase tickets out of pocket and we will issue a refund. Starting tomorrow, please send us chat through the MoviePass app showing the full receipt including the movie title, sh

Virgin Galactic plans to open a commercial spaceport in Italy

Image
Virgin Galactic announced today that it has partnered with two Italian aerospace companies with the aim to bring commercial space flight to Italy in the future, The Verge reports. Alongside Altec, which is owned in part by the Italian Space Agency, and private space company Sitael, Virgin Galactic intends to develop an Italian spaceport from which future flights can take off. "From the Renaissance to modern space science, Italy has always been a natural home to great innovators and breakthrough ideas which have shaped the human experience," Virgin Group founder Richard Branson said in a statement . "I believe Italy's vision, which has led to this collaboration with our Virgin space companies, will provide a real impetus as we strive to open space for the benefit of life on Earth." Virgin Galactic says that the partnership's goal is to have a

Researchers put together a resource list for victims of smart home-aided domestic abuse

Image
A London-based research team has just published a six-page list of resources for domestic abuse victims who've been targeted through smart home gadgets that are controlled by their partners. In some cases, a domestic abuser can remotely control internet-connected home appliances using their phone, such as a smart thermostat, causing these devices to seemingly malfunction or become disabled with no probable cause. The six-page document includes a number of blogs, written works, and organizations to contact that are intended to both inform victims of current research and it give pointers on how to deal with technology that might be used to abuse or harass them. The resource list also seeks to tackle any discrepancies in smart home... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2KEydW3

TwitchCon 2018 tickets are now on sale, starting at $89

Image
This year's TwitchCon is moving north from Long Beach , California, to the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, and if you're planning to make the trip to the annual gathering of Twitch creators and fans this October, you can now snap up your tickets . Saturday and Sunday single-day tickets cost $89 ($99 on site, if there are any still available), Friday tickets are $99 ($109), and three-day passes are $179 ($189). Friday perhaps costs a little more because that's when the keynote and party take place . For the first time, this year's event will host a version of Games Done Quick , the popular bi-annual charity speedrunning event. Instead of a week-long marathon, runners will race through their games of choice over a 50-hour period (submissions open this weekend if you want to take part). Also new this year is an ambassador program, in which 15 partner

Netflix user reviews weren’t useful anyway

Image
Earlier today, Netflix announced it was getting rid of user reviews , which has been a mainstay of its platform from day one. According to the company, the decision was made because of declining usage. But that discounts the fact that Netflix hasn't exactly made the feature all that accessible. User reviews can only be seen on the web, and the company made a decision to drop bylines and star ratings earlier thi s year. It's no wonder then, that users have written fewer reviews. Maybe, just maybe, Netflix doesn't actually want them. Netflix is no longer just a distributor of movies and TV shows; these days, it's a bonafide studio, with critically-acclaimed hits like House of Cards , Stranger Things and The Crown . Of course, it's a good thing when the shows get good reviews -- Stranger Things , for example, has well over 3,000 (most of them positi
