How to Prevent Cloud Configuration Errors

Image
The advent of cloud computing has dramatically altered the technology structure of today's companies – making it much easier and faster to deploy resources as needed. In the traditional model, application developers had to wait for IT to provision storage and compute resources; meanwhile, security and network teams were needed to make the resources accessible and compliant with company policies. The process often took weeks or even months. By contrast, cloud-based resources could be spun up in minutes, and new applications deployed in that same day, without IT or network security involvement. This newfound business agility introduces a new layer of risk to a company's environment, as resource misconfiguration may not be discovered until it's too late. The problem is further compounded by the lack of consistent security controls across competing cloud implementations.

Snapchat CEO throws shade at Facebook's poor data practices

Image
Snapchat has had a rough time lately, as it faces criticism about its redesign, its slowing user growth, and the fact that Facebook has copied its product several times over by adding Stories to almost all of its products. But CEO Evan Spiegel doesn't seem to be deterred by the Facebook's copycat moves. In one particular jab against the social network still plagued by the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Spiegel said "We would really appreciate it if they copied our data protection practices also." Plus, Spiegel said that he felt flattered that Facebook found its products great enough to copy. "If you design something that is so simple and so elegant, that the only thing other people can do is copy it exactly... that as a designer is really is the most fantastic thing in the world," he said. "Snapchat is not just a bunch of features,&qu

Facebook admits it was late on fake news

Image
At the Code Conference today, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and CTO Mike Schroepfer faced questions on all of the issues that has plagued the company lately, like the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and the influx of fake news and hate speech. Specifically, Re/Code 's Kara Swisher asked them why hasn't anyone been fired for the Cambridge Analytica scandal. "We do fire people," Sandberg answered, though she wouldn't specify that it was related to the scandal. "We don't trot them out and make examples of them." But, ultimately Sandberg says that both she and CEO Mark Zuckerberg are responsible, reiterating the apology tour the two have been on for the past few months. "We were late on fake news and election interference," she told Swisher. "I don't think we were focused enough on the bad." More than that, Sandberg

Astronomy Picture of the Day: The Case of the Backwards Orbiting Asteroid

Image
The Case of the Backwards Orbiting Asteroid Why does asteroid 2015 BZ509 orbit the Sun the backwards? As shown in the featured animation, Jupiter's trojan asteroids orbit the Sun in two major groups -- one just ahead of Jupiter , and one just behind -- but all orbit the Sun in the same direction as Jupiter. Asteroid BZ509 however, discovered in 2015 and currently unnamed, orbits the Sun in retrograde and in a more complex gravitational dance with Jupiter . The reason why is currently unknown and a topic of research -- but if resolved might tell us about the early Solar System . A recently popular hypothesis holds that BZ509 was captured by Jupiter from interstellar space billions of years ago, while a competing conjecture posits that BZ509 came from our Solar System's own distant Oort cloud of comets, perhaps more recently. The answer may only become known after more detail

'Pokémon: Let's Go' will connect 'Pokémon Go' and Switch this fall

A new series of Pokémon games coming to the Switch this fall will link the "classic RPG experience" with 2016's augmented reality hit Pokémon Go . Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go Evee ! will also support multiplayer, and there's a Poké Ball Plus accessory that works to throw Poké Balls in-game as a motion controller and works as a Pokémon Go Plus when you're away from home. Both games are based on 1998's Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition , and will be released November 16th, bridging the gap between the free Pokémon Quest game for Switch that launched today and an unnamed new game in the series that will be released late next year. Qualcomm built a chip to power AR and VR headsets

Image
Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips have powered devices from smartphones and laptops to VR headsets , but the company is doing away with repurposing mobile processors for mixed reality devices. The company just released the Snapdragon XR1 -- its first "dedicated Extended Reality (XR) platform," and it's a chipset designed specifically for AR and VR headsets. XR1 is meant to offer better experiences on mainstream devices by enabling high-quality visual and audio playback, as well as 3-DoF and 6-DoF interactive controls. Qualcomm also announced tha t companies like Meta, Vive, Vuzix and Pico are already working on devices using the XR1 chip, and those products could potentially be ready as early as this year, depending on each partner. The XR1 will support 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, 3D overlays, dual displays and popular graphics APIs OpenGL, O

Qualcomm’s XR1 is its first chip dedicated to augmented and virtual reality

Image
Qualcomm's processors have ended up in plenty of AR and VR devices over the past couple years. But to date, none of those chips have been fully dedicated to augmented and virtual reality — they've just been repurposed phone processors. That changes today with the introduction of the XR1, Qualcomm's first chip made specifically for AR and VR devices. The chip is supposed to make it somewhat cheaper for companies to build entry-level versions of augmented and virtual reality gadgets, the first of which are expected to start appearing at the end of this year or in early 2019. Though Qualcomm getting into the AR / VR chip game could be very exciting for the industry, this first chip isn't all that thrilling on its own. Qualcomm says its...
