A project to remove 50,000 tons of plastic from the Pacific has begun

Image
An ambitious project to clean up the 80,000 metric tons of plastic floating in the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" has begun. On Sunday, the Ocean Cleanup Project started towing its "Ocean Cleanup System 001" from San Francisco to a trial site some 240 nautical miles (260 miles) away. Once it arrives, the wind and waves will push System 001 into a U-shape and it will slowly drift along on its own. A 10-foot long skirt hanging below will collect pieces of plastic as small as a millimeter in size, and smaller boats will later scoop them up and take them to shore for recycling. During the two week trial, the system will be "extensively monitored" to make sure it does the job while not harming plankton and other critical marine life. "We want to catch plastic, not fish," Joost Dubois from The Ocean Cleanup told CNN . ...

vSAN Maintenance Mode – RAID-1 and RAID-5 using “Ensure Accessibility”

Image
In one of my sessions at VMworld 2018 in Las Vegas (#HCI1475QU – "Demystifying vSAN for the Traditional Storage Administrator"), a question was asked as to how vSAN reacts when entering multiple hosts into maintenance mode (EMM) with limited resources. While it is a practice that is discouraged, the answer depends on storage policy rules The post vSAN Maintenance Mode – RAID-1 and RAID-5 using "Ensure Accessibility" appeared first on Virtual Blocks . via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2QlxnwL If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr Unsubscribe from these notifications or sign in to manage your Email ...

VMware vSAN 6.7U1 Storage Reclimation – TRIM/UNMAP

VMware vSAN supports thin provisioning, which lets you, in the beginning, use just as much storage capacity as currently needed and then add the required amount of storage space at a later time. Using the vSAN thin provisioning feature, you can create virtual disks in a thin format. For a thin virtual disk, vSAN provisions The post VMware vSAN 6.7U1 Storage Reclimation – TRIM/UNMAP appeared first on Virtual Blocks . via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2QfA9Dw If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr Unsubscribe from these notifications or sign in to manage your Email Applets. ...

VMworld 2018 Energy and Iteration

Image
VMworld 2018 (US) has come and gone, and I must say the energy and excitement were palpable. From the first keynote to the very last session, attendees heard and experienced some incredible announcements and demos. From the main stage, Pat Gelsinger along with his CTO Ray O'Farrell not only made announcements but also had several in-depth demos of new technology in action. The keynote set a tone for this VMworld to not just be a time where new products were talked about but were instead made real and tangible. This gave attendees a sense that VMware was leading the charge into the next generation of technology and not just riding in behind lse. During Pat Gelsinger's opening keynote some ground-breaking advancements were announced. Everything from Ecstatic DRS and EBS backed vSAN to Amazon RDS on-premises and vSphere on ARM! All that was packed into the first hours of V...

Creating vRealize Operations Manager Alerts Using REST API

Whenever I'm faced with a repetitive configuration task, I search for ways to automate it. Finally, an app for people who don’t know how to Google ‘salmon recipes’

Image
Imagine: You're trying to make do with whatever's left in your fridge or you've just found a choice (or cheap) cut of meat at the grocery store. You could just Google the ingredient(s) and see what recipes pop up, but that's low-tech thinking for simpler minds. Why not harness the power of machine learning, AI and other buzzwordy tech to do it for you? The new app PixFood promises to do just that: It recognizes a photo of a single ingredient and suggests recipes with step-by-step instructions for your culinary adventures! Or you could, y'know, Google it. As PixFood's tech stands now, it's a step up from just recognizing whether or not something's a hot dog . Once you take a photo of an ingredient with the app, you'll have to confirm what kind of food it is from a few suggestions -- which sounds a lot like every user helping train its...
