VW and Renault promise electric car sharing services

Image
Automaker-run EV sharing services are still novelties now, but they could be plentiful before long. Both Volkswagen and Renault have announced plans for electric car sharing services in a bid to promote "sustainable mobility." VW's We platform will offer on-demand EVs starting in Germany in 2019, and expandi ng to North America, Asia and other European cities "as early as" 2020. Renault, meanwhile, is prepping the gradual rollout of a similar service in Paris and the Ile-de-France region beginning in September 2018. A second phase of the Renault plan will see Paris and Renault start an "open working group" that would talk about integrating new transportation services into cities. It would draw on the C40 network, which includes about 100 cities and counts Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo as its chair. The two services come alongsid...

Veeam Backup & Replication support for vSphere 6.7

Image
VMware vSphere 6.7 wasn't officially supported by Veeam Backup & Replication, as also the new vSphere 6.5 Update 2 (due to the backporting from 6.7). VMware Workspace ONE – Education Webcasts

Image
A few weeks ago, I wrote a little article about the VCP-DW 2018 certification and mentioned a webcast relating to training and certification. Upcoming VMware Webcast : What's new Digital Workspace Training and Certification I then realised that I forgot to post about the next set of webcasts relating to the VCP-DW 2018 certification, so apologies, the first webcast has been played, but is available for on-demand viewing and the remaining webcasts are available to register. Many existing AirWatch cu...

Volvo's new brand is devoted to app-based car services

Image
Volvo is launching another spinoff brand , but this time it's not about convincing you to buy a car... in fact, it might wean you off ownership altogether. The Swedish automaker has unveiled M, a badge devoted to "rethinking traditional car ownership" with an "intuitive app." Details of what that involves are unsurprisingly vague. However, M is developing "proprietary learning technology" that gauges your specific needs instead of simply telling you where to pick up a car -- in other words, a smarter form of car sharing. M is building on the back of Volvo's Swedish car sharing service, Sunfleet. Volvo expects to fold Sunfleet into M in 2019. You won't have to wait that long to see what M is doing, thankfully. It's revealing more details later in the year, and expects a wider beta test of its offering in the fall. ...

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Shadow Rise on the Inside Passage

Image
Shadow Rise on the Inside Passage At sunset look east not west. As Earth's dark shadow rises from the eastern horizon, faint and subtle colors will appear opposite the setting Sun. This beautiful evening sea and skyscape records the reflective scene from a cruise on the well-traveled Alaskan Inside Passage in the Pacific Northwest. Along the horizon the fading sunset gives way to the the pinkish anti-twilight arch, more poetically known as the Belt of Venus . Often overlooked at sunset in favor of the brighter western horizon, the lovely arch is tinted by filtered sunlight backscattered in the dense atmosphere, hugging the planet's rising blue-grey shadow . Amazon may send holiday toy catalogs in the mail

Image
Toys 'R' Us is calling it quits in the US, but Amazon is apparently ready to pick up the slack. Bloomberg tipsters have asserted that Amazon is planning to mail a holiday toy catalog to "millions" of American homes and (naturally) distribute it at Whole Foods Market stores. There's no mention of how Amazon might spin the familiar formula, but you can presume there won't be any talks of retail locations. The company has declined comment. It may seem odd for Amazon to mail a catalog -- doesn't its advantage revolve around shedding the legacies of conventional retail? However, it makes sense in light of the timing. Despite Toys 'R' Us' financial problems, it was still a major player in the toy world before it announced plans to close all its US and UK shops. This represents Amazon's chance to reel in gift-givers ...

Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 pen will include Bluetooth

Image
Samsung hasn't been shy about hinting that the Galaxy Note 9 launch will focus heavily on the S Pen. Now, however, we have a better idea of what that means. An FCC filing for the Note 9's S Pen has revealed that it'll include Bluetooth, suggesting remote control features. The documents unsurprisingly don't say what those features are , but leaker Ice Universe had previously claimed that the stylus could control music playback and timers. We wouldn't expect anything sophisticated (it's a one-button device with a screen), but it could provide value even if you only rarely intend to draw. It's not certain what the Note 9 will be like, although it's still expected to carry a Snapdragon 845 chip (and the corresponding Samsung Exynos chip in some regions) and the next generation of Bixby . This being Samsung, we wouldn't be surpr...

Audi shows off its electric SUV's screen-filled interior

Image
Audi has been more than happy to show off its e-tron Quattro prototype's outside , but what will it be like if you're taking it for a drive? Wonder no more: the automaker has offered a proper look at the electric SUV's interior. In many ways, it's even more of a technology hub than Audi's modern vehicles. The driver is effectively surrounded by screens -- there's the familiar digital instrument column, but you'll also see two touchscreens in the center stack. This also gives you a good sense of how cameras will substitute for mirrors on some models, as 7-inch OLED displays tucked above the door handles will give you a peek at what's behind you. The inside is otherwise as posh as you'd expect from a modern Audi, with soft surfaces everywhere, plenty of optional illumination and a 705W, 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system Th...
