Astronomy Picture of the Day: Sun Dance

Image
Sun Dance Sometimes, the surface of our Sun seems to dance. In the middle of 2012, for example, NASA's Sun-orbiting Solar Dynamic Observatory spacecraft imaged an impressive prominence that seemed to perform a running dive roll like an acrobatic dancer. The dramatic explosion was captured in ultraviolet light in the featured time-lapse video covering about three hours. A looping magnetic field directed the flow of hot plasma on the Sun . The scale of the dancing prominence is huge -- the entire Earth would easily fit under the flowing arch of hot gas. A quiescent prominence typically lasts about a month, and may erupt in a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) expelling hot gas into the Solar System . The energy mechanism that creates a solar prominence is still a topic of research . Unlike 2012, this year the Sun's surface is significantly more serene , featuring fewer spin...

Russian Hackers Spy on Military Targets, Governments: Report

Image
In 2017 and 2018, a Russian cyber-espionage group believed to be government-backed has engaged in covert attacks targeting military and government organizations in Europe and South America, Symantec warns.  Tracked as APT28 but also referred to as Fancy Bear, Swallowtail, Strontium, Sofacy and Sednit, the group was  accused of targeting the Democratic National Committee (DNC) during the 2016 Presidential elections in the United States.  Unlike the 2016 attacks, however, the campaigns the group has conducted this year and the last were low-key intelligence-gathering operations, a new Symantec report reveals.  The assaults, the security firm says, hit a well-known international organization, as well as military targets and governments in Europe, a government of a South American country, and an embassy belonging to an Eastern European country.
