Paypal lets you spend money in Gmail, YouTube and more

Image
Android Pay users have been able to dip into their PayPal accounts for a little over a year. Now, the money transfer service has partnered with Google to provide a more seamless way to use it across products like Google Play , YouTube and Gmail. When you add PayPal to your Google Play account, said the former company in a blog post , it will automatically become available as a payment option on all the other Google services that accept payment, including Google Store . While it might raise some privacy concerns, the fact is that you'd have to sign in to use PayPal, anyway, so you might as well enjoy one less step. Now more than ever, vSAN deployments are quickly growing in number. There are many vSAN documents available on StorageHub with great content; from design guides to day 2 operations, but a common ask from the field relates to vSAN deployment considerations. While there are many areas we can explore, some of them vary based on The post vSAN Deployment Considerations appeared first on Virtual Blocks . via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2xgkwGm If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Galaxies Away

Image
Galaxies Away This stunning group of galaxies is far, far away, about 450 million light-years from planet Earth and cataloged as galaxy cluster Abell S0740. Dominated by the cluster's large central elliptical galaxy (ESO 325-G004), this reprocessed Hubble Space Telescope view takes in a remarkable assortment of galaxy shapes and sizes with only a few spiky foreground stars scattered through the field. The giant elliptical galaxy (right of center) spans over 100,000 light years and contains about 100 billion stars, comparable in size to our own spiral Milky Way galaxy . The Hubble data can reveal a wealth of detail in even these distant galaxies, including arms and dust lanes, star clusters, ring structures, and gravitational lensing arcs . Boba Fett 'Star Wars' movie is in the works

Image
Just as the latest Star Wars Anthology movie, Solo , hits theaters, The Hollywood Reporter says that a movie featuring Boba Fett is in development. James Mangold, who directed The Wolverine before serving as writer and director on Logan will write and direct this movie, while both THR and Deadline report that Logan producer Simon Kinberg is still linked to the project. Fett's character became a fan favorite after briefly appearing in Empire Strikes Back with his jetpack, blaster rifle, grappling rope and distinctive armor before more of his story was revealed during the prequel trilogy. In case it's unclear -- the parade of Star Wars content will not stop. In addition to at least one TV show headed for Disney's upcoming streaming platform , the company also has other movies in the works outside of the main series including one about Obi-Wan Kenobi and a film

Vive Focus VR update lets you take calls from the real world

Image
Even though the Vive Focus won't be available outside of China until later this year , it's already getting a major update which will make it a lot more versatile. At the annual Vive Ecosystem Conference in Shenzhen just now, HTC announced that as of today, its standalone 6DoF (6 degrees of freedom) VR headset can install a "System Update 2.0" which adds a handful of notable features. One of the main highlights here is the added ability to receive calls, social notifications and messages from a paired HTC smartphone, with the recently unveiled U12+ being the first model to take advantage of this immersive feature. This is nothing new for existing Vive users, of course, as the Vive companion mobile app already supports the PC-powered headset on this end. Another cool feature brought by this major update is a "Surroundings Mode," which is

ASUS will ship its NVIDIA G-Sync HDR monitor in June

Image
Acer jumped ahead of the pack when it became the first manufacturer to put an NVIDIA G-Sync HDR monitor (which syncs refresh rates with GeForce GTX graphics cards) on sale last week. ASUS is following hot on its trail though, with a display that has the same specs -- and an identical price tag when it ships next month. The 27-inch ROG Swift PG27UQ monitor, like Acer's Predator X27, can hit 1,000 nits of brightness, which is an essential benchmark to meet G-Sync certification. It makes sense that the monitors share a brightness peak, as they each boast the same AU Optronics IPS panel. The ASUS sensor automatically adjusts the brightness depending on the ambient light, while the 384 local dimming zones should deliver deep blacks. The PG27UQ has a 144Hz refresh rate while offering 3,840 x 2,160 resolution along with HDR visuals. You'll need a beefy rig and c

Apple rejects Valve’s Steam Link game streaming app over ‘business conflicts’

Image
Valve's game streaming service Steam Link won't be coming to iOS today, despite a successful Android beta launch earlier this month . According to the official Steam Database Twitter account, Apple rejected the Steam Link app over apparent "business conflicts with app guidelines." Steam Link was first announced for mobile back in March, and the app functions as a remote desktop so users can access their Steam library of PC games from a mobile device and stream them directly for touchscreen play or for use with a Bluetooth controller. It's not exactly clear at the moment what the "business conflict" here is, and whether it has anything to do with Apple's somewhat contentious 30 percent App Store fee for all purchases, in-app or otherwise.... Airbnb tests its own version of Snapchat's Stories for rentals

Image
Even Airbnb can't resist the urge to copy Snapchat , it seems. The home rental outfit is quietly beta testing a Stories feature in its iPhone app that (surprise!) lets you document your trips with photos and short videos. You can view the resulting productions both on your phone and the web, and they appear to automatically link to places in the stories along with the related accommodations. Clearly, Airbnb sees this as a marketing tool -- you might be more likely to book a rental if you see examples of what people did during their stays. It doesn't hurt that this could get you to use the app beyond scheduling your own trips. We've asked Airbnb for comment on the beta test. As our TechCrunch colleagues point out, though, the most pressing questions might surround Airbnb's policies. Will it keep Stories if they're highly critical or include ri

Apple wins $539 million from Samsung in latest chapter of ongoing patent trial

Image
The latest twist in the ongoing, seven-year-old smartphone patent trial between Apple and Samsung awards the iPhone maker a final verdict of $539 million in damages, according to Bloomberg . Jurors awarded Apple the verdict in federal court in San Jose, California today, concluding that Samsung infringed on Apple design and utility patents covering aspects of mobile design like rounded corners, the rim of the front face of the iPhone, and the now-iconic app grid layout of the iOS home screen. "We believe deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers," Apple said in a statement given to Bloomberg . "This case has always been about more than money." Effectively, the... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2KT9FnU

Amazon Music app now offers hands-free control thanks to Alexa

Image
Amazon Music's mobile app introduced Alexa voice control back in September, but there was a catch: you still had to tap a button to take action. Why couldn't you just talk to it like you would an Echo speaker ? You can now. Both the Android and iOS ap ps just received hands-free Alexa control, with many of the same commands that you'd use with other Alexa devices. You only have to start talking to listen to a favorite playlist or queue up a song you don't remember by name. The feature works for both Prime Music and Music Unlimited users, and you can turn it off if you don't like the thought of the app waiting for your voice commands. No, this isn't likely to make you jump from Spotify or Apple Music. However, it does create the kind of harmony that Amazon likely wants if its music services are going to grow. If you have an Echo or

Jury rules Samsung owes Apple $539 million in iPhone patent trial

Image
In a patent case that has been running since 2011 , today a jury ruled that Samsung owes Apple $539 million in total. In 2012 Apple was awarded nearly $1 billion in damages , and Samsung agreed to pay as much as $548 million, but after the verdict was thrown out by the Supreme Court, we ended up in a retrial with hundreds of millions at stake. Samsung has already paid Apple some $399 million over these patents, and in a statement an Apple spokesperson said: We believe deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers. This case has always been about more than money. Apple ignited the smartphone revolution with iPhone and it is a fact that Samsung blatantly copied our design. It is important that we continue to protect the hard work and innovation of so many people at Apple. We're grateful to the j
