Here attacks Google Maps with new freemium website plan

Image
When visiting the website for a local restaurant or other small business, you'll likely Google Maps embedded to show the location. Developers of such sites were recently thrown for a loop , however, when Google announced new, more expensive pricing and demanded a credit card and Google Cloud account for all API access to Maps. To profit from this discord, Here has unveiled a new "freemium" plan that offers many more free "transactions" (page loads) than Google Maps, with no need to provide a credit card. Here, formerly part of Nokia but now a separate company owned by a consortium of German automakers, offers 250,000 free transactions per month, compared to just 28,000 free page loads for Google Maps. Prior to the new freemium tier, it would have cost developers around $120 per month for that number of page loads. On top of that, developer...

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Live: Cosmic Rays from Minnesota

Image
Live: Cosmic Rays from Minnesota Cosmic rays from outer space go through your body every second. Typically, they do you no harm. The featured image shows some of these fast moving particles as streaks going through Fermilab's NOvA Far Detector located in Ash River, Minnesota , USA . Although the image updates every 15 seconds, it only shows cosmic rays that occurred over a (changing) small fraction of that time, and mostly shows only one type of particle: muon s. The NOvA Far Detector's main purpose is not to detect cosmic rays, though, but rather neutrinos from the NuMI beam shot through the Earth from Fermilab near Chicago , Illinois , USA, 810 kilometers away . Only a few neutrino events are expected in NOvA per week, though. The NuMI / NOvA experiment is allowing humanity to better explore the nature of neutrinos , for example how frequently they change type during t...

Mixed-gene French grapes may lead to cheaper, safer wine

Image
French wineries have to use a lot of pesticide to keep their grapes healthy, and that's both expensive and costly -- a problem when some countries don't have those problems. The country might just have a solution, though. Researchers at France's Institute of Agronomical Research (INRA) recently received permission to grow four grape varieties that are genetically resistant to mildew rot, eliminating much of the need for pesticides. Where a winery typically needs to spray pesticides about 15 times a year, the INRA varieties may only need one or two. The grapes weren't genetically modified . Rather, the researchers identified rot-resistant genes in other grapes (including those from Asia and the US) and cross-bred them to promote the improved traits. They also made sure to get rid of variants that were overly acidic or produced unwanted scents. ...

Wells Fargo says hundreds lost homes to computing 'error'

Image
Software mistakes are normally little more than inconveniences, but they had particularly serious consequences for some Wells Fargo customers. An SEC filing from the bank has revealed that a "calculation error" in its mortgage loan modification underwriting tool led to about 625 customers either being denied loan changes or not receiving offers when they would have qualified. Roughly 400 of those customers eventually lost their homes to foreclosure, Wells Fargo said. The bank stressed in a statement to CNN Money that the bug didn't necessarily cause the foreclosures, but it certainly didn't help. The glitch existed between April 13th, 2010 and October 20th, 2015, when the error was fixed. Wells Fargo has apologized for the error and stated that it's "providing remediation" that includes an $8 million fund set aside for those aff...

Iraq reportedly ignored concerns over electronic voting machines

Image
Iraq is learning first-hand about the potential pitfalls of electronic voting machines in the wake of its disputed May 12th national election. Reuters has discovered that the country's election commission ignored an audit board warning that t he vote counting machines, provided by Miru Systems, were unsuitable and susceptible to tampering. The commission committed a "clear legal violation" by moving forward, according to the board. The commission declined to comment, but a Miru official in contact with Reuters rejected the accusations of potential tampering. The company visited Iraq to inspect the disputed machines and determined that there was "no malfunction" that would indicate hacking, according to the worker. The statement likely won't reassure Iraqi politicians or their supporters. The country's Parliament had already orde...

Music labels sue Cox again for allegedly ignoring piracy

Image
Music labels really, really aren't a fan of Cox's internet service . Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. have sued Cox again for contributing to copyright infringement after it allegedly refused to take "reasonable measures" to fight piracy. While internet providers are supposed to terminate the accounts of users who ignore warnings against bootlegging music, Cox only ever conducted "soft terminati ons" (temporary disconnections) and warned some users over 100 times. It even instituted a cap on the volume of accepted copyright complaints and cut back on the number of anti-piracy staffers, according to the labels. Cox successfully overturned a $25 million penalty in the original lawsuit through an appeal, but it didn't regain the safe harbor protecting it against liability for the actions of its customers. It still had a responsibility...
