Apple signs Jason Momoa to star in original sci-fi series 'See'

Image
Apple is taking on Netflix with an ambitious original series of its own. The upcoming show is called See, and it will star someone you're most likely familiar with: Jason Momoa aka Khal Drogo aka Aquaman . Spearheaded by Peaky Blinders< /em> creator Steven Knight and Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence, See is an epic sci-fi drama set in a future where humans have lost the sense of sight. They had to find ways to interact and hunt without the capability to see until their new way of life was thrown into chaos when a set of twins who have the sense of sight were born. Momoa will play Baba Voss, a character that resembles the Khal in that he's also a warrior and a leader of his people. Apple has ordered either 8 or 10 episodes -- sources have conflicting information about the show's length -- to offer its customers, but it's still unclear wh

Galaxy Note 9 leak suggests it looks a lot like the Note 8

Image
An allegedly official render of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has been posted over at Android Headlines , and... well, there's not a lot to see. The render only shows the front of the device, and if it's accurate, the Note 9 will look almost identical to its predecessor from this angle. The bottom bezel might be slightly thinner, and the S Pen slot could be a little more flush with the device, but it's hard to tell for sure. The news, then, is that the Note 9 will probably be a lot like the Note 8, just like this year's Galaxy S9 was an iterative upgrade on the S8. It's reasonable to expect that the Note 9 will follow the S9 in having a more conveniently located fingerprint sensor, at least — rumors have gone back and forth on whether it... HTC's blockchain 'Exodus' phone launches this fall

Image
In May HTC announced plans for a blockchain-focused mobile device and now development is far enough along to say that its Exodus will arrive in Q3 of this year. A website is active and taking signups for more information, promising "the first cold wallet phone with key recovery." We still don't have a ton of details (although we're expecting to hear more today at the company's Rise event in Hong Kong) but it's all about decentralized internet, apps and the ability to hold your data on the device instead of in the cloud. HTC also announced it's partnering with CryptoKitties , the "world's biggest game to be built on blockchain technology." Instead of cryptocurrency, it uses the technology to create unique digital creatures that players can trade or breed, with billions of possible combinations. You won't have to wait for the Ex

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Symbiotic R Aquarii

Image
Symbiotic R Aquarii You can see it change in brightness with just binoculars over the course of a year. Variable star R Aquarii is actually an interacting binary star system, two stars that seem to have a close, symbiotic relationship . About 710 light years away, this intriguing system consists of a cool red giant star and hot, dense white dwarf star in mutual orbit around their common center of mass. The binary system's visible light is dominated by the red giant, itself a Mira -type long period variable star . But material in the cool giant star's extended envelope is pulled by gravity onto the surface of the smaller, denser white dwarf, eventually triggering a thermonuclear explosion and blasting material into space. The featured image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows the still-expanding ring of debris which spans less than a light year and originated from a blas

Engineer stashed Navy drone trade secrets in his personal Dropbox

Image
Trade secret theft allegations are serious enough in the corporate world, but they're particularly grave when they involve military projects. And one contractor is learning that the hard way. A Connecticut federal court has found electrical engineer Jared Sparks guilty of six trade secret theft and transmission charges after he took files relating to underwater drones built for th e US Navy's Office of Naval Research . When contemplating a switch of jobs from drone builder LBI to its software partner Charles River Analytics, he uploaded "thousands" of his then-current employer's sensitive files to his personal Dropbox account, including accounting and engineering data as well as design-related photos and renders. A grand jury charged Sparks with the offenses in November 2016 alongside Connecticut resident Jay Williams. Sparks is the only on

Apple bug crashed iPhones when you wrote 'Taiwan'

Image
Many tech companies have to write code to adapt to China's strict rules , including its denial of Taiwan's independent status. However, Apple's approach to it may have been... slightly buggy. Security researcher Patrick Wardle has reported that iOS 11.3 and earlier included a bug that would crash some users' devices whenever they wrote "Taiwan" or used the Taiwanese flag emoji, regardless of the app . While some aspects of the flaw remained mysterious to Wardle, he determined that certain language/region settings would return a "null" code, prompting the crash when referencing the island. You may have noticed that we're referring to the bug in the past tense -- that's because it's thankfully been fixed as of iOS 11.4.1 . And unlike some of Apple's past text-related bugs , it wasn't guaranteed to happen. You

California mall owner's license plate readers send info to ICE

Image
Some shopping malls in California are scanning license plates and sending that data to a surveillance vendor that works with -- and sells information to -- Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. That's according to a report by tech watchdog group Electronic Frontier Foundation, which discovered that a regional real estate company operating retail centers across the western state is feeding visitor information into a nationwide database that ICE reportedly gained access to at the beginning of this year. The Irvine Company has installed automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) at "one or more" of its shopping malls in the city, according to its privacy policy , which notes that the information collected is sent to Vigilant Solutions. That's the company providing license plate recognition data to ICE, The Verge reported back in January. While The Irvine C

HTC’s blockchain-powered Exodus smartphone is a risky bet that needs to pay off

Image
In May, HTC first announced that it was working on a blockchain-powered smartphone called the Exodus. The news came as one of the company's more intriguing projects after a poor start to the year. Last year, HTC shipped over 2 million products in Q1. This year, it shipped only 630,000 products in Q1, according to numbers from IDC. HTC is in pretty poor shape after a round of layoffs last week where the company laid off 1,500 employees in Taiwan in hopes of becoming profitable. Sales in June were down 68 percent, according to the company . Its latest flagship, the U12 Plus, has received largely negative reviews over its odd solid-state buttons and software bugs. It's a less than stellar time for blockchain, as well. Cryptocurrency prices... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2KW1lYl

A hacker was caught selling a stolen Air Force drone manual for $200 on the dark web

Image
Hackers love to sell phone numbers, passports, and other personally identifiable information on the deep web, but last month one person was looking to make a quick buck off of a few military maintenance manuals. On June 1st, Recorded Future's Insikt Group discovered someone attempting to sell military documents on the deep and dark web. The person had recently registered an account on a hacking forum and published screenshots of what he had dug up. Through weeks of investigation, analysts were able to determine that the documents were authentic and the hacker had obtained them by gaining access to a Netgear router located at the Creech Air Force Base through a previously disclosed FTP vulnerability. In 2016, cybersecurity researchers... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2unVPmG

Tesla Model 3 orders are available to everyone in North America

Image
At last, you no longer need a reservation to order a Model 3 -- if you meet the right conditions. Tesla has opened its ordering system for the 'starter' EV to everyone in North America, letting anyone walk through the process whether they're ready to buy or just curious . Don't expect to buy the exact configuration you were looking for, though. While the worst of Tesla's producti on problems may be over , it's not yet ready to sell the $35,000 car it promised long ago. You currently have to buy a car with the long-range battery and premium interior, pushing the minimum price up to $49,000 before tax breaks. Just about everything else is up to you, however, including the choice of rear- or all-wheel drive, the Performance option, styling and Autopilot. Reservation holders still get first dibs, as Electrek observed , so you'll still b
