How San Francisco became an afterthought in the scooter wars

Something funny happened while San Francisco was in the throes of its "scooter wars": the city became a sidenote.

San Francisco's temporary ban on the shared electric two-wheelers that appeared on streets and sidewalks overnight earlier this spring started on June 4th. It will continue indefinitely until up to five companies out of 12 applicants are offered city permits. (That process was supposed to conclude by the end of June, but as of press time, no permits had been issued, and there was no timeline for when they might be. "They have kind of a code of silence," one scooter company official said of city regulators.)

Evernote cuts staff as user growth stalls

Note-taking app Evernote has fallen on hard times of late, culminating in its latest spate of job cuts impacting 15 percent of its workforce (54 employees). CEO Chris O' Neil -- an ex-Googler who took the reins in 2015 -- announced the firings at an all-hands meeting earlier today, reports TechCrunch . In a message on the Evernote blog , O' Neill admitted he'd set "incredibly aggressive goals" for the company in 2018. He continued: "Going forward, we are streamlining certain functions, like sales, so we can continue to speed up and scale others, like product development and engineering." The layoffs follow an exec exodus just weeks ago and the company's recent brand refresh (complete with a refined logo and wordmark).
