Microsoft reportedly working on rival Amazon Go tech for cashier-free stores

Image
Microsoft is reportedly working on technology that could be used to power check-out free retail stores. Reuters reports that the software giant has been talking to Walmart about using the tech, which will rival Amazon's own Go initiative. Amazon first launched its cashier-free convenience store in the company's hometown in Seattle last year. Shoppers can simply grab items and leave, as the store is fitted with multiple camera and sensors that use computer vision algorithms to detect what items you're taking out of the store and charged to your account. While Amazon Go is expanding to Chicago and San Francisco soon , Reuters reports that Microsoft has hired a computer vision specialist from Amazon Go. Microsoft is reportedly experimenting... Sony issues weak response to Fortnite cross-play controversy on PS4 and Switch

Image
Sony is facing a growing backlash from PlayStation 4 fans that are angry they can't log into the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Thousands of Fortnite fans have been reacting angrily since news broke earlier this week that you can't use a Fortnite account that's been used on the PS4 with the Nintendo Switch. Sony is blocking Epic Games from allowing cross-play and progression sync between the PS4 and Nintendo Switch or Xbox One. This means that any progress, skins, and purchases can't be shared between PS4 and Nintendo Switch or Xbox One. After a couple of days of radio silence, Sony is finally starting to respond : "We're always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience. F... VMware Workstation and Windows 10 Security

Image
The new build of Windows 10 have a lot of new security settings and some of them can make cause issues with VMware Workstation (or potentially also other host hypervisors). One common issue when you try to power on a VM in Workstation and instead you get this error message: VMware Workstation and Device/Credential Guard are not compatible. VMware Workstation can be run after disabling Device/Credential Guard. The VMware KB 2146361 (Powering on a vm in VMware Workstation on Windows 10 host where Credential Guard/Device Guard is enabled fails with BSOD) describe this issue. Virtualization Performance Monitoring: vCPU Demand, Usage, and Contention

Image
When managing a virtualized environment you'll naturally want to monitor your compute resources such as memory, CPU, storage, and bandwidth in order to keep an eye on any possible performance issues. We've covered monitoring before – like how much information to collect , how granular you need to get , how to check load averages , and configuring vSphere Alarms for resource consumption . Today we're taking a closer look at CPU performance monitoring in particular. Often times the CPU is the first potential culprit to check when you encounter a struggling virtual machine. Learn the differences between CPU metrics, some common problems, and best practices for provisioning CPU cores in this blog. via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2t8hXkm If N

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Six Planets from Yosemite

Image
Six Planets from Yosemite The five naked-eye planets, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, have been seen since ancient times to wander the night skies of planet Earth. So it could be remarkable that on this night, standing at the side of a clear, calm lake, six planets can be seen with the unaided eye. Have a look. Very bright and easy to spot for skygazers, yellowish Mars is left of a pale Milky Way. Saturn is immersed in the glow of the Milky Way's diffuse starlight. Jupiter is very near the horizon on the right, shining beyond the trees against the glow of distant city lights. Last weekend, while admiring this night time view across beautiful, high-altitude Lake Tanaya in Yosemite National Park, a thoughtful and reflective observer could probably see three planets more . Opportunity rover stops responding during Mars dust storm

Image
Things have gone from bad to worst for the Opportunity rover now that it's caught up in a massive Mars dust storm . In an update , NASA revealed that Opportunity didn't respond to a contact attempt. The team now assumes the robotic explorer's batteries have reached a critically low level, and that it's currently in a low power fault mode that shuts off everything but the mission clock. Outside of waking up to check power levels, the rover will stay in this mode unless its solar panels can restore enough energy. The problem, as you might guess, is that this isn't a small dust storm. It covers roughly a quarter of Mars. You might have to wait a long while before there's a chance of resuming contact with Opportunity, and that's assuming the rover hasn't been damaged. Don't give up hope, though. The rover managed to survive a fi

Musical.ly drops its stand-alone live streaming app

Image
Musical.ly may be blowing up as a social video service, but it's scaling back the amount of apps it offers. The company has informed TechCrunch that it's dropping its stand-alone livestreaming client, Live.ly, and rolling its features into its main lip-syncing app. Fire up Live.ly now and you'll only be steered toward a download for Musical.ly. Eventually, Live.ly will disappear from mobile app stores altogether. The transition has been somewhat abrupt -- users didn't get much of a heads-up before Musical.ly disabled its stand-alone live client, and the core app's feature is only being rolled out in stages. Despite the hiccups, Musical.ly is adamant that it's devoted to livestreaming. It noted that most live viewers were already watching in the Musical.ly app -- this is just consolidating effort, it argued. Of course, this is also com

NASA’s unmanned drone had its first solo flight in public airspace

Image
NASA's remotely-piloted Ikhana aircraft flew in public airspace for the first time without a chase aircraft. Typically, one follows the large drone when it flies in parts of the sky zoned for use by commercial and private pilots, but the FAA granted the space agency a waiver to test out several key technologies they've been developing for years detect and avoid other aircraft. They wanted to know if this baby bird could fly on its own among piloted planes, and it passed the test. The Ikhana took off from Edwards Air Force Base in California and transitioned through several air traffic control jurisdictions and spent time in multiple altitude zones (up to 20,000 feet for commercial aviation, down to 10,000 feet for general aviation) to make sure its remote pilot could navigate and coordinate with ground operations just like he was in the drone's cockpit

In 'Cyberpunk 2077' you control your own dark, intoxicating future

Image
Cyberpunk 2077 looks fantastic. It's a joy to be able write those words, and it's a relief that they ring so true. CD Projekt Red, the studio behind the Witcher series, has been remarkably silent since revealing Cyberpunk in 2012 -- developers released one teaser trailer in 2013 and then went underground, leaving sci-fi and RPG fans in the dark for five long years. At E3 2018, they finally turned on the light. And, my oh my , what a sight it is. The light happens to be neon, shining bright blue, green, pink, red, purple and yellow across the sprawling, metallic future of Night City. Cyberpunk offers a fresh kind of sci-fi dystopia, ditching the heavy, dreary backgrounds of Blade Runner or Deus Ex for a brighter, yet still corrupt and dangerous, metropolis. This art direction alone infuses the game with life -- it feels more connected to reali
