Skagen’s minimalist Falster smartwatch gets a sequel with fitness features

Image
Danish watchmaker Skagen, a subsidiary of Fossil, announced a sequel to its minimalist Falster touchscreen smartwatch today at IFA 2018. The device, called the Falster 2, incorporates health-tracking features from Fossil's most recent Wear OS smartwatches, announced earlier this month , alongside a new swimproof case and a nice-looking magnetic steel mesh strap. The health-tracking features include a heart-rate monitor and support for the Google Fit platform. In addition to that, the Falster 2 now comes with GPS and it supports Google Pay with a built-in NFC chip, so you can make mobile transactions from the watch itself without needing to take your phone out of your pocket. The device also contains two side buttons that can be... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2PJWTv4

Skagen revamps its slick-looking Falster smartwatch

Image
Skagen's Falster has been one of the darlings among Wear OS smartwatches thanks to its posh yet minimalist look, but it was hard to recommend to everyone when there were no standout features besides the design. The Fossil-owned brand is fixing that today with the Falster 2. It still maintains the Danish brand's aesthetic but introduces a heart-rate sensor, GPS and NFC payments. You can use this to track an outdoor run and pay for a snack after your workout. Skagen is promising some tangible improvements on the outside, too. The Falster 2 has a slimmer bezel, for one thing. Not that the original's was egregiously thick, but it makes for an even cleaner aesthetic. Plus, with a case that's 2mm smaller than before, the 1.19-inch face now seems bigger. The casing is now billed as "swim-proof," and there are two customizable pushers (the two smalle

Dell aims for a more premium Chromebook with its Inspiron 14 2-in-1

Image
Dell isn't new to the Chromebook game, but most of its previous efforts have been focused on education-facing devices — not bad computers, per say, just ones more designed for the lower demands and rougher treatment of younger students than for serious work. But that changes this year at IFA 2018 with the company's new Inspiron Chromebook 14 2-in-1, which is meant to offer a more powerful, mature Chromebook option similar to the company's (just revamped) midrange Inspiron line. To that end, the Inspiron Chromebook 14 is made from aluminum, not plastic, with an 8th-Gen Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and up to 128GB of internal memory. It's not offering the hardware power or design as, say, Google's Pixelbook, but for a $599.99... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2MUtobD

Dell’s new Inspiron 7000 line brings XPS features at a lower price

Image
Dell's recent XPS 13 models — with its latest, 8th-Gen Intel processor and ultra-thin bezels — have become one of the best laptops around. Now, some of those features are trickling down the price spectrum, starting with the newly refreshed Inspiron 7000 lineup that was announced at IFA 2018. The new Inspiron 7000s (which come in 13-inch, 15-inch, and 17-inch sizes) all feature 2-in-1 designs, similar to the older models, but Dell has totally overhauled the outside. The plastic is gone in favor of a machined aluminum chassis, and the screen now has a far slimmer bezel that actually improves on the XPS 13. It manages to place the camera on top of the display (which Dell says is due to a new, ultra small part that it's debuting with the... Dell gives its Inspiron 2-in-1 laptops a meaningful refresh

Image
Dell is refreshing its Inspiron line of notebooks for the holiday season, and instead of simply updating them with the latest eighth-generation Intel processors , the company is adding functional features. The new Inspirons come with narrower bezels, redesigned heat dissipation with vents carved into their hinges, USB-C DisplayPort compatibility and Alexa . It might not seem like the most riveting set of updates, but overall, they make the Inspiron lineup feel more modern and sophisticated. The most interesting of the new Inspirons is the Chromebook 14 2-in-1. It's Dell's first premium Chromebook for mainstream consumers, which seems like a sign that the company is taking the category more seriously. The 14-inch Chromebook is made from aluminum, which is quite sturdy, especially around the metal keyboard, though I did find it the device a bit heavy. I also

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Nearby Cepheid Variable RS Pup

Image
Nearby Cepheid Variable RS Pup In the center is one of the most important stars on the sky. This is partly because, by coincidence, it is surrounded by a dazzling reflection nebula . Pulsating RS Puppis , the brightest star in the image center, is some ten times more massive than our Sun and on average 15,000 times more luminous. In fact, RS Pup is a Cepheid type variable star , a class of stars whose brightness is used to estimate distances to nearby galaxies as one of the first steps in establishing the cosmic distance scale. As RS Pup pulsates over a period of about 40 days, its regular changes in brightness are also seen along the nebula delayed in time, effectively a light echo . Using measurements of the time delay and angular size of the nebula, the known speed of light allows astronomers to geometrically determine the distance to RS Pup to be 6,500 light-years, with a rem
