Watch a Tesla Model X zoom inside a Boring Company tunnel

Image
Someday, The Boring Company's tunnels could become a busy network of passenger-carrying shuttles, private vehicles and bicycles trying to dodge traffic. But right now, its existing tunnel under LA is pretty ahem boring -- save for a short moment last week when the company tested its vehicle transportation platform using a Tesla, that is. Sure, the event wasn't nearly as exciting as the time SpaceX sent Elon Musk's cherry-colored Roadster to space , but it still shows how a platform running on the tunnel's tracks would ferry private vehicles from one point to another. The Boring Company chose to prioritize providing a transportation system for pedestrians, but it will still provide private vehicles a quick way to get to their destinations in the face of unyielding traffic. Just recently, it revealed that Tesla will manufacture the high-speed po

Astronomy Picture of the Day: Mars Engulfed

Image
Mars Engulfed What's happened to Mars? In 2001 , Mars underwent a tremendous planet-wide dust storm -- one of the largest ever recorded from Earth. To show the extent, these two Hubble Space Telescope storm watch images from late June and early September (2001) offer dramatically contrasting views of the martian surface . At left, the onset of smaller "seed" storms can be seen near the Hellas basin (lower right edge of Mars) and the northern polar cap . A similar surface view at right, taken over two months later, shows the fully developed extent of the obscuring global storm. Although this storm eventually waned, in recent days a new large dust storm has been taking hold of the red planet . June 17, 2018 via NASA https://ift.tt/2MzmyFo Manage this Applet

Foxconn establishes its North American headquarters in Milwaukee

Image
Foxconn is extending its fledgling American footprint beyond its planned display factory in Wisconsin. The tech manufacturing behemoth is establishing its North American headquarters in Milwaukee, 30 miles north of the upcoming factory. It's buying a seven-story building from Northwestern Mutual and expects 500 people to work at the facility, which will include an innovation hub to help startups create apps using its display tech. That's a drop in the bucket compared to the intend 13,000 jobs at the screen facility, but it's symbolic of the company's US presence -- it's not just dabbling this time around. The plans come hot on the heels of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee launching a co-op program where engineering students will travel to Taiwan to study at Chung Yuan Christian University and work at a Foxconn facility before finishing

Silk Road creator's alleged ally extradited to the US

Image
Key Silk Road figure Roger Thomas Clark, better known by his Variety Jones alias, is now facing trial in the US. The alleged mentor to creator Ross Ulbricht (aka Dread Pirate Roberts) has been extradited to the States after spending well over two years in custody in Thailand . He now faces an American trial o ver charges that include narcotics trafficking, computer hacking, money laundering and plotting to traffic in fraudulent ID. Clark had his first hearing on June 15th. If found guilty, he faces a minimum 10 years in prison and could be sentenced to life behind bars. To date, Clark has denied the charges. If you believe accusations, Clark played a central role in Silk Road's operations. He provided advice on security and infrastructure, helped hire programmers, discussed service rules and got involved in sales promotions. He reportedly used the threat of

Tesla is now making 3,500 Model 3 cars per week

Image
Tesla has been scrambling to make its goal of producing 5,000 Model 3 cars per week by July , and it appears to be making good progress... although it also has a long way to go. Electrek has obtained a company-wide email from Elon Musk indicating that Tesla is now reliably producing "above 500" vehicles per day, or about 3,500 per week. Some portions of the line are "almost at 700" per day, he added. In a tweet, Musk also noted that Tesla had assembled its first performance-oriented dual motor model . Musk pointed out that a few parts of the production line still needed "radical improvements," such as the paint shop and the end of the line. And there's still a tremendous sense of urgency -- Musk said he would be at his company's Fremont factory "almost 24/7" over several days to ensure teams get "as many resources

'Fortnite' marks World Cup with stadium and goal scoring challenges

Image
You didn't think Epic Games would let a sporting event as momentous as the World Cup go by without a Fortnite tie-in, did you? Sure enough, the developer has made a slew of updates to mark the beautiful game's most important tournament. There's now a hard-to-miss stadium map, and your weekly challenges now include scoring goals on fields across the island. And naturally, there's plenty of themed items to buy with your spare V-Bucks. There are six male and female jerseys to pick from, complete with personalization to reflect your favorite player's colors and number -- now might be your chance to have Neymar rule Tilted Towers. You can buy a footie-themed glider or pick axes, and emotes like a red card can signal an unforgivable offense. We suspect the novelty of all these extras will wear off once the World Cup winds to a close, but this might

Amazon and Microsoft back campaign against California privacy act

Image
Amazon, Microsoft and even Uber have joined Google and other tech titans in actively opposing the California Consumer Privacy Act. As The Verge saw in the state's disclosure records , the three giants contributed a significant amount of money to a campaign pushing back against the initiative: Amazon and Microsoft donated $195 ,000 each, while Uber pitched in a smaller-but-still-noteworthy donation worth $50,000. Google, AT&T, Facebook and Verizon -- four of the first corporations that backed the fight against the initiative -- all plunked down $200,000. Facebook and Verizon eventually withdrew their support, however, with the former doing so after Mark Zuckerberg was hauled in front of Congress to answer questions about the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The California Consumer Privacy Act aims to give California residents the right to know what kind of data c

Apple supplier Foxconn now has a North American headquarters in Milwaukee

Image
Taiwanese contract electronics manufacturer Foxconn has purchased a building in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to serve as its North American headquarters, according to the Associated Press . Foxconn is buying the 611 Building originally owned by Northwestern Mutual, which handed the building over to the company in a ceremony on Friday. It says that it will house 500 workers in the new headquarters, which will also include an "innovation center" designed to aid startups working on applications for the LCD panels that the company plans to manufacture in the state. Louis Woo, Special Assistant to Foxconn chairman Terry Gou, said that the company will "focus on building a stronger corporate team here in Milwaukee." The company has also announced a...
