You might see the practical impact of the Apple-Qualcomm royalty feud in the very near future. As part of an earnings call , Qualcomm financial chief George Davis told investors that his company believed Apple would "solely use our competitor's modems" (read: Intel's ) in the next iPhones . Given that Qualcomm would know whether or not Apple was a customer this close to an iPhone launch (new models usually appear in September), it's safe to say tha t the chip maker has been shut out this time around. It's not shocking that Apple would drop Qualcomm like a hot potato. Apple's ongoing dispute with Qualcomm looks like it will have a big impact on the components used in this year's upcoming iPhone models, according to Qualcomm Chief Financial Officer George Davis. On an earnings call this afternoon, Davis said, "Apple intends to solely use our competitor's modems rather than our modems in its next iPhone release," as reported by CNET . Davis didn't mention Intel by name, but Intel is the only other supplier of that competent for Apple's smartphones. One of the more frustrating aspects of Windows 10 is the operating system's ability to start installing updates when you're in the middle of using it. While Microsoft has tried to address this aggressive approach to updates with features to snooze installation , Windows 10 users continue to complain that updates reboot devices when they're in use. Reacting to this feedback, Microsoft says it's aware of the issues. Venture capitalist Peter Thiel has returned to teach a class at Stanford University, according to a listing spotted by Stanford graduate Andrew Granato on Twitter . Thiel is currently listed as a co-instructor for "German 270: Sovereignty and the Limits of Globalization and Technology." Coinbase announced today that it has teamed up with WeGift and customers in Europe and Australia will now be able to convert their cryptocurrency into e-gift cards. Gift cards are available for companies like Nike, Uber, Google Play, Ticketmaster and Tesco and Coinbase won't collect any withdrawal fees when users buy the gift cards with their cryptocurrency balances. Customers will also get bonus credit on some of their e-gift card purchases. Gift cards for Nike, Ticketmaster and Uber offer six percent, three percent and two percent bonuses, respectively, for example. In 2015, Coinbase launched the Shift debit card , which allows US customers to spend their bitcoin in stores and online via a Visa-backed card. Qualcomm has finally given up on buying NXP Semiconductors, a Dutch company known for automotive and IoT chips, which it's been trying to acquire for nearly two years . The deal has long been held up by the Chinese government, and now, Qualcomm has said it will scrap the agreement altogether rather than continue the uncertain fight toward a completed acquisition. In doing so, it'll have to pay a breakup fee of $2 billion. The two companies initially entered into a deal in October 2016, with Qualcomm agreeing to pay $47 billion for NXP. Microsoft is starting to test its next major Windows 10 update. Codenamed 19H1, the update will be made available in the first half of 2019. Microsoft has started releasing public builds of 19H1 to Windows 10 testers today , with features that will also be included in the codename Redstone 5 update due in September or October. Microsoft is adding a new Mixed Reality Flashlight feature that opens a low-latency pass-through camera feed from a controller to allow users to see the real world around them during VR apps or games.
