Netflix's 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' trades kitsch for pentagrams

Image
Kiernan Shipka might be best known for her work as Sally Draper on Mad Men , but since then she's had a number of roles that should change your perception of her. Now we have an idea of what her take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch looks like in Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina . Check out the trailer below and you'll see all manner of witches, witchcraft and creatures of the night. If you were hoping for something pink and bubblegummy like the '90s sitcom starring Melissa Joan Hart, you're probably going to be a little disappointed. However, if Shipka's role in 2017's excellent indie horror film The Blackcoat's Daughter impressed you, this could be up your alley. Haven't seen that? It's streaming for free on Amazon Prime at the moment -- and it'll help pass the time until Sabrina 's Netflix debut October 26th. ...

There's a goblin lurking on the outskirts of our solar system

Researchers may have found the first signs of an exomoon

Image
Over the last couple of decades, we've spotted thousands of planets outside of our solar system -- Kepler alone has confirmed more than 2,600. But so far, we've haven't found any exomoons, despite the likelihood of them being prevalent in our galaxy. Because moons tend to be much smaller than their planet counterparts, they're harder to spot, which is probably why we have yet to find any. However, researchers at Columbia University have now found evidence of what might be an exomoon located thousands of light-years from Earth. The scientists analyzed data from 284 exoplanets discovered by Kepler, looking for signs of an exomoon. And last year, they announced that they might have found one . More observations were needed before they could draw any conclusions, but the evidence scored them 40 hours of observation time with the Hubble telescope. With t...

Internet industry groups sue California over net neutrality law

Image
Industry groups representing AT&T, Charter, Comcast and Verizon among others have joined the Justice Department in suing California over the state's new net neutrality law . The groups said the legislation is a "classic example of unconstitutional state regulation" and asked the court to block the law before it takes effect January 1st, Reuters reports . California Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 822 into law Sunday, to restore some key net neutrality protections . But, almost as soon as the governor put pen to paper, the federal government sued the state, with US Attorney General Jeff Sessions claiming the "legislature has enacted an extreme and illegal state law attempting to frustrate federal policy." A hearing in that case is set to take place November 14th in Sacramento. In December, the Federal Communications Commission vote...

Garmin fitness watches can finally play music from Spotify

Image
Garmin's initial music support for its fitness watches has been limited to Deezer and iHeartRadio, which is odd to say the least -- most people don't use those services, and you weren't about to ditch a subscription to something else just so you could replace the gym's soundtrack with your own. Thankfully, Garmin is aware of your plight -- it's rolling out support for offline Spotify music on its wristwear, starting with the Fenix 5 Plus series . Download the relevant app in the Connect IQ store and you can save songs, albums and playlists to the watch using WiFi, giving you the chance to catch up on your Release Radar while away from your phone. The app is available now, although there are catches. As is often the case, you'll need a Spotify Premium subscription to tune in. And Garmin's Fenix 5 Plus watches aren't cheap by any s...

Living with the LG V40 ThinQ and its five cameras

Image
So far this year, we've seen LG release three pricey smartphones: the LG V30S ThinQ , the V35 ThinQ and the G7 ThinQ . (It's pronounced "thing-cue," by the way, and saying it never gets more pleasant.) The fourth, and presumably final, big device of the year is arguably the company's most ambitious. Sure, the new LG V40 ThinQ packs many of the same components you'll find in the rest of the year's high-powered flagships. It also packs a whopping five cameras (three rear and two front-facing), raising the bar for smartphone camera insanity that you can expect to see other major phone makers embrace in due time. But what is it actually like to live with? Before we dig into that, a quick note: I've been testing one for the better part of a week, and since the software isn't quite final, we're holding off on a full review ...

LG's new Watch W7 blends a touch display with mechanical hands

Image
Android Wear recently got a substantial overhaul, and now it needs some fancy new hardware to run on. That's where LG's new Watch W7 comes in. It might not have the most elegant name, but it does pack interesting quirk: in addition to the touch-friendly 1.2-inch LCD screen, the W7 has a pair of mechnical hands so you stay on schedule even after the watch's battery dies. This isn't exactly novel -- we've seen startups like MyKronos adopt the idea for its ZeTime smartwatch -- but big-name device makers haven't been as quick to embrace this more analog approach. We're not really sure why, either: smartwatch battery has gotten consistently better over the last few years, but they've never been able to outlast a trusty old Seiko or Citizen. LG says that the W7 will run in its full-blown smartwatch mode for about two days off a single char...

Samsung's 85-inch 8K TV is available to pre-order for $15,000

Image
Samsung's gigantic 8K QLED TV is very nearly available in the US... and you might need to take out a loan to afford it. The company has opened up American pre-orders for the 85-inch Q900 ahead of its October 28th ship date, and it will cost you a staggering $15,000. While that's not the most expensive bleeding-edge set we've seen (remember when a 4K TV cost $20,000 ?), it still means monthly payments closer what you'd expect for a car. We liked the Q900 in our brief eyes-on between its extreme resolution, vivid colors and high brightness (no mean feat given all the extra pixels). However, you're buying the TV purely for bragging rights at this stage. It's not just that there's a dearth of 8K-native content -- it's that the price of 8K sets is likely to plunge in the next few years, just as OLED and 4K prices fell through the floor. ...
