Astronomy Picture of the Day: Milky Way over Trolls Tongue

Image
Milky Way over Trolls Tongue You have to take a long hike to see the Troll's Tongue -- ten hours over rocky terrain. And in this case, it took three trips to capture the landform below a clear night sky. Trolltunga itself is a picturesque rock protrusion extending about 700 meters over mountainous cliffs near Lake Ringedalsvatnet in Norway . The overhang is made of billion-year-old Precambrian bedrock that was carved out by glaciers during an ice-age about 10,0 00 years ago. The featured picture is a composite of two exposures, a 15-second image of the foreground Earth followed 40 minutes later by an 87-second exposure of the background sky. Thousands of discernable stars dot the backdrop starscape in addition to billions of unresolved stars in the nearly vertical band of our Milky Way Galaxy . Instagram may soon let you tag your friends in videos

Image
Instagram is testing a feature that lets users tag their friends in videos. Unlike with photos, where an overlay on the image shows everyone who's tagged, you can tap a button that takes you to page listing all the people tagged in the clip. The videos don't appear to show up on tagged users' profiles, as images they've been tagged in do. But since this is a test, that could change if and when the feature rolls out to everyone. A small percentage of users are seeing the test, Instagram told TechCrunch , and the tags are appearing only in the app and not on the web. Instagrammers have been able to post videos since 2013 , so it's a little surprising that video tags still aren't available for everyone yet, especially given that you can tag other people in Stories , a feature that's only been around for a couple of years. With Instagram pla...

Plantronics' updated headphone lineup includes true wireless earbuds

Image
Plantronics has lately made a point of delivering solid wireless audio for relatively little cost, and that's particularly evident this year. It's releasing a refreshed headphone lineup that sees it both push into uncharted territory and lower prices. The centerpiece for the fitness crowd is the BackBeat Fit 3100 you see above. It promises true wireless listening with ear hooks that should keep the earbuds in place during a workout, with audio awareness that could keep you safe during an outdoor run. It's available now for $150. You'll also have more options if you're more interested in shutting out noise than sweating up a storm. The BackBeat Go 810 is a higher-end over-ear set that offers 20 hours of listening for $150, while the Go 410 in-ears (below) tout 12 hours of audio and active noise cancellation for $130. You can also expect modestly upd...

Apple Pay and Google Pay can buy you a Slurpee at 7-Eleven

Image
After years of holding out, 7-Eleven is finally ready to embrace tap-to-pay in earnest. The convenience store chain has followed through on earlier teasers by supporting Apple Pay and Google Pay at its US stores. "Most" American locations will support both formats by the end of September, and the company told Engadget that it technically started the rollout in August. You could already use Samsung Pay, but this expands the audience to virtually any one craving a late-night snack. It's a simple addition, but it marks the end to a long saga. 7-Eleven was one of the champions of CurrentC payments , and steadfastly refused to support NFC payments in hopes of pushing its more merchant-friendly (but less convenient) technology. You may know what happened next: CurrentC floundered , NFC took off and stores like Rite Aid started accepting tap-to-pay. Whi...

Nerf adds 'Fortnite' blasters to its foam arsenal

Image
Blizzard made waves earlier this year when it announced Nerf guns were coming based on those found in its colorful hero shooter Overwatch , but that's not the only game getting licensed foam blasters. Today, Hasbro and Epic Games announced that Fortnite -themed Nerf guns are coming, too. Sadly, there aren't even any mock-ups to show which in-game guns are getting the real-world treatment. Some of the title's weaponry is based on actual firearms, which seems a little too realistic for Nerf's lineup (though their armory looks closer to true guns every year). Luckily, there are plenty of ridiculous options in Fortnite 's arsenal. Hasbro also announced a new version of Monopoly themed after the wildly popular battle royal game, so time will tell if the gaming zeitgeist can invigorate traditional board games, too. PSVR mystery adventure ‘Déraciné’ arrives November 6th

Image
These days, FromSoftware is known for its grim Dark Souls and Bloodborne action games, and the upcoming Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice isn't disabusing us of that notion. But before the latter hits stands next March, the game maker has partnered with Japan Studio with another treat for us: Déraciné , the PSVR adventure game about a boarding school mystery, is coming out on November 6th for $30. Déraciné is directed by the same person who has helmed most of the Dark Souls-style games, Hidetaka Miyazaki, hearkening back to the days when FromSoftware put out titles in a range of genres. In it, players inhabit an 'unseen faerie' roaming around an old boarding school, gathering scraps of detail that tell a larger story. The game will be available on the PlayStation Store, or you can pick up a physical copy at Gamestop. Pre-orders are open, which get you a Déraci...
