Tenacious D created a YouTube series to accompany their new album

Image
If you're wondering what Jack Black's been up to lately, other than starring in box-office-conquering movies , he's drawn every single frame of a YouTube show starring himself and Tenacious D bandmate Kyle Gass. The comedy-rock duo's web series is called Post-Apocalypto , which shares a name with their upcoming record. The series debuts September 28th with each of the six episodes featuring new songs. An episode will hit Tenacious D's channel each Friday until the album (which includes frequent collaborator and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl on drums) drops November 2nd. Post-Apocalypto depicts Black and Gass in a world that's been decimated after a nuclear bomb. They'll visit the White House, and have adventures with a time machine and in space while dealing with some daddy issues. Judging by the teaser clip, it seems the show will c...

A 'Lord of the Rings' game is coming from the publisher of 'Warframe'

Image
If you're itching for a new Lord of the Rings game to move past the controversy of Shadow of War , we have good news -- although it might not be quite what you're expecting. Athlon Games (the owner of Digital Extremes and Splash Damage) has signed a licensing deal that will see it create an "online game set in the world of Middle-earth." There are precious few details beyond that, but you can likely rule out seeing the likes of Frodo or Aragorn when the title will be set "long before" the events of the LOTR novels, with new places and characters. Much like Amazon's future show , Athlon isn't messing with the canonical material. There's no mention of platforms, release dates, or even the basic business model. While Athlon bills itself as a publisher for free-to-play games, that doesn't necessarily mean it's adopting ...

Evernote slashes price of Premium subscription as many executives depart

Image
Evernote is currently offering a sale on its Premium membership, slashing its yearly subscription price from $70 down to a much more reasonable $42. The company offered the same deal earlier this year. If you're interested in grabbing the deal, it's available now on Evernote's site . It only applies if you pay one lump sum for the annual subscription. Meanwhile, Evernote has confirmed to TechCrunch that in the past month the company has lost many senior executives, including its CTO Anirban Kundu, CFO Vincent Toolan, CPO Erik Wrobel and head of HR Michelle Wagner. The company did not comment on a reason for the departures, but a source close to the matter tells TechCrunch that "Evernote is in a death spiral... Paid user growth and active... Skype's podcast-friendly call recording is now available

Image
The Skype team is acting on its promise to make life easier for podcasters and other content creators. Call recording is now available in the latest version of Skype except for Windows 10, which will see an upgrade in the "coming weeks." The clips you record will live in the cloud for 30 days -- you can forward them to others or save them for posterity. Not surprisingly, the Skype crew is eager to avoid any legal trouble in areas where recording demands mutual consent. Everyone involved in a call will know when you start recording, and the app encourages you to tell other participants if they aren't already aware. The feature might not matter so much if you just want to remember what your friends said in an ordinary conversation, but this could be helpful to virtually anyone who wants to broadcast conversations. Many of them use Skype, but they o...

Netflix and YouTube are most throttled mobile apps by US carriers, new study says

Image
Since the demise of net neutrality, US telecoms have increased the amount of throttling they impose on customers trying to watch mobile video through services like Netflix and YouTube, according to new research from a group of researchers at Northeastern University and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The study, the findings of which were published first by Bloomberg today , reveals the extent to which companies like AT&T and Verizon have taken advantage of lax government regulation under President Donald Trump to limit data speeds for customers. This isn't presenting entirely new information. All four big carriers in the US now offer unlimited data plans that restrict streaming video on mobile devices to 480p by default, in an... FCC chairman pushes for internet content transparency laws

Image
The FCC isn't involved in the latest round of tech companies' congressional testimony , but that isn't stopping Chairman Ajit Pai from chiming in. The regulator has written a blog post effectively calling for laws requiring internet companies like Facebook, Google and Twitter to disclose how they decide on bans, demonetization and other policy decisions. People have "virtually no insight" into how tech giants make their decisions, he said, arguing that people should "seriously think" about forcing companies to "abide by new transparency obligations." Pai likened it to rules governing broadband providers. If ISPs are obligated to provide details of how their services work, he said, why shouldn't sites let you make "educated choices" before you use them? The statement is somewhat ironic given that Pai has spent a la...

Image
TikTok, which absorbed Musical.ly last month, is rolling out a new feature that will let users add their reactions to other videos. In the "Share" menu, there's now a "React" option, and when you select it, the app will record a video of you as you watch a clip. You'll then be able to move your reaction video around the screen to place it where you want. An app update with the new feature should be available in both the App Store and Google Play within the next couple of d ays, according to TechCrunch . Bytedance, the firm behind China's major news aggregating service Jinri Toutiao, purchased Musical.ly back in 2017. Earlier this year, the company began consolidating Musical.ly apps and features before merging Musical.ly with TikTok in August. Via: TechCrunch Source: App Store via Engadget R...

Instagram is building a standalone app for shopping

Image
Instagram is working on a new standalone app dedicated to shopping, The Verge has learned. The app — which may be called IG Shopping — will let users browse collections of goods from merchants that they follow and purchase them directly within the app, according to two people familiar with the matter. Instagram declined to comment. It could not be learned when the app might launch. Its development is still ongoing, and it could be canceled before it is released. But sources familiar with its development say Instagram believes it is well positioned to make a major expansion into e-commerce. More than 25 million businesses already have Instagram accounts, and 2 million of them are advertisers, Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl...
