Security researchers found vulnerabilities at AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint that could have exposed customer data

Image
It hasn't been a good week for telecommunications companies: security researchers have uncovered security flaws with systems at AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile that could have left customer data accessible to bad actors. Yesterday, BuzzFeed News reported two flaws that left customer information information vulnerable at AT&T and T-Mobile. In T-Mobile's case, an "engineering mistake" between Apple's online storefront and T-Mobile's account validation API allowed for an unlimited number of attempts on an online form, which would allow a hacker to use commonly-available tools to guess an account PIN or the last four digits in a customer's social security number, in what's called a brute-force attack. A similar problem occurred with phone... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2P3rene ...

US customs faces lawsuit over copied iPhone data

Image
A US Muslim woman whose iPhone was taken from her by US Customs and Border Protection (CPB) is suing to have her property returned. But the property in question isn't the phone itself, which was eventually returned, but the data stored on it and retained by CPB. As searches of electronic devices belonging to people entering or returning to the US continue to become mo re frequent , this case and others are raising important questions about what can and should be searched and retained by the US government. According to the court documents filed by Rejhane Lazoja and her attorneys, Lazoja was returning to the US from Zurich, Switzerland on February 26th of this year. She was questioned and held by customs officers for some time and then asked to produce any electronic devices she had on hand. The agents confiscated her phone and asked her to unlock it multiple tim...

Apple is giving new iCloud subscribers 200GB of space for free for two months

Image
Apple has a new deal for US customers who haven't signed up for iCloud yet. 9to5Mac spotted a Reddit thread that pointed to the deal : new subscribers on the four big US carriers can get 200GB free for two months. The deal appears to be only be available in the US for customers who haven't signed up for the service yet. As to be expected, there's some fine print: those customers will be charged $2.99 a month after that two month window. Image: Apple As my colleague Chaim Gartenberg noted back in May, it's certainly an obvious ploy on Apple's part to get customers signed up for its services, and it's a bit irritating, especially if you've already plunked down hundreds of dollars for a new device. Plus, Apple already... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2BLZFNp ...

'Fortnite' will introduce a 'robust competition system' in the fall

Image
There have certainly been Fortnite competitions , but you can't really say that it's designed for competition -- and that's a problem when Epic is spending big money on tournaments . You won't have to wait too long to see a mode, however. Epic Games is developing a "robust competition system" that will have players square off against each other within the same match, and "be recognized for their accomplishments." It didn't say how this system would work (a ladder, perhaps?), but it would arrive sometime later in the fall. Epic has already been using some esports-like features, such as live spectator cameras, and plans to make "extensive improvements" to this audience-friendly feature in the weeks ahead. There are a number of improvements on the way even if you have no intention of playing for glory. The studio i...

VMware and its Cloud Provider Platform

Image
In the past, the relationship between VMware and the public cloud was, in my opinion, quite confusing. Initially a vCloud program for third-party cloud services providers, than the VMware vCloud Air era (in direct competion with the third-party cloud services providers), then the idea to sell the vCloud Air brand to OVH (one of the third-party cloud services providers)… And now? Again a strong third-party cloud services providers program, but also VMware Cloud on AWS. But what is interesting is that finally seems that now the VMware's vision of the public (and hybrid) cloud is strong […] The post VMware and its Cloud Provider Platform appeared first on vInfrastructure Blog . via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2NlHLCQ If New feed item from https://blogs....

Guess Who’s Back At VMworld? Microsoft!

Microsoft! I know, right? It was 10 years ago that Microsoft tried to be funny (poker chips, look it up, not the smartest marketing idea ever…) and ended up home alone. Luckily, 2018 is a different time! Microsoft and VMware are both in very different parts of their cloud-based journey, and both companies have something […] via Latest imported feed items on VMware Blogs https://ift.tt/2ocZzVr If New feed item from https://blogs.vmware.com/feed , then send me an email at kr
