Facebook's new acquisition will make it much easier even for amateur live broadcasters to add interactive effects on their videos. The social network has snapped up a startup called Vidpresso*, which offers clients access to a technology that allows them to display polls, comments and other elements from Facebook, Twitter, Periscope and other social networks on the screen. A spokesperson told TechCrunch that it has acquired its seven-person team and its technology, but not the company itself. Vidpresso's employees will apparently join Facebook's offices in Menlo Park, London and LA while continuin g to provide clients like BuzzFeed and Nasdaq access to their services. It's not clear if Facebook will eventually cut off those companies' access to Vidpresso's tech, but the team said in their announcement that joining the social network will al...

M86 in the Central Virgo Cluster Is there a bridge of gas connecting these two great galaxies? Quite possibly, but it is hard to be sure. M86 on the upper left is a giant elliptical galaxy near the center of the nearby Virgo Cluster of galaxies. Our Milky Way Galaxy is falling toward the Virgo Cluster , located about 50 million light years away. To the lower right of M86 is unusual spiral galaxy NGC 4438, which, together with angular neighbor NGC 4435, are known as the Eyes Galaxies (also Arp 120). Featured here is one of the deeper images yet taken of the region, indicating that red-glowing gas surrounds M86 and seemingly connects it to NGC 4438. The image spans about the size of the full moon. It is also known, however, that cirrus gas in our own Galaxy is superposed in front of the Virgo cluster , and observations of the low speed of this gas seem more consistent with t...

The FCC has hit a snag in its plan to curb broadband subsidies for low-income homes. A DC appeals court has issued a stay order temporary blocking the regulator from limiting the $25 monthly Lifeline subsidy in tribal lands, arguing that native groups and small carriers are likely to win their case opposing the cuts. The court agreed w ith plaintiffs that the FCC's move would likely lead to a "major reduction, or outright elimination" of vital communication for many tribal residents, and "substantial, unrecoverable losses" for providers that might lead to them going out of business. The judges behind the ruling also rejected the FCC's claim that cutting the subsidies would spur carriers to build their own networks in tribal areas. The Commission didn't show historical evidence that reduced subsidies would lead to more telecom inves...

Telltale's episodic The Walking Dead videogame experience is finally coming to an end, as the first episode of the final season arrives this week. Nvidia has unveiled its new Turing architecture along with details of the first GPUs to use it. Turing includes dedicated "RT Core" hardware designed to drive ray tracing, a complex technique that can deliver extremely realistic lighting effects but has been prohibitively resource-intensive to render in real time. Nvidia calls the new Turing-based Quadro RTX the "world's first ray-tracing GPU" and claims it's the biggest leap since the company introduced CUDA in 2006. The Quadro RTX products are intended for high-end professional use, not gaming — the flagship Quadro RTX 8000 will cost $10,000 when it ships toward the end of the year. For that, you get a GPU with 48GB of new GDDR6 memory, 4,608 CUDA cores, and 576 Tensor cores. Nvidia... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2B6Zufn ...

CBS wants to remind you that its All Access streaming service isn't just about Star Trek , and it's doing that in grand fashion. The network has posted the first trailer for One Dollar , a thriller series that underscores the dangers of money. It features singer Sturgill Simpson as a former steel mill worker swept up in class and culture wars that ignite after a strange multiple murder. The hook, as the name implies, is a dollar bill -- its path through a declining company town provides different perspectives from people desperate for and corrupted by cash. The show premieres on August 30th. The provider has been spreading its wings in recent months, adding both a wider variety of original TV shows and a raft of sports programming . One Dollar could be a valuable addition in that context -- it's a major production for a service that still relies heavi...

If you thought Elon Musk's sudden announcement last week that he had "funding secured" to make Tesla privately owned could not possibly get any weirder, now Azealia Banks is involved.
