Twitter admits Infowars tweets broke rules, but the account stays up

Image
After a CNN inquiry found ten tweets from Alex Jones' accounts that it felt should've qualified as breaking Twitter's rules, the service admitted late Friday that it agreed on seven of them . The tweets have been deleted, and CNN reports that on his Infowars show, Jones directed his staff to remove them to "take the super high road." (Meanwhile, these greatest hits are all still live.) All of this comes days after Twitter declined to follow the actions taken by Apple Podcasts, Facebook, YouTube and others to ban the channel, claiming it hadn't violated their rules. Now, even though it admits that is not the case, Twitter said that it would've asked for the offending tweets to be deleted, and that has already happened. Apparently only two of them were recent enough to be considered for it to cite them in punitive action, while the other five ...

A screenwriter is working on a list of every hit film you can’t stream

Image
We've all had moments trying to hunt down films that just don't seem to be anywhere online, whether on streaming services, for rent or to purchase. Screenwriter John August ( Charlie's Angels , Big Fish , the upcoming live-action Aladdin ) noticed that Ron Howard's light sci-fi film Cocoon wasn't available online, he started a list collecting other popular films from the last 30-odd years that are completely absent from the internet for reasons unknown -- and he's asking fellow cinephiles to help fill it out. I'm curious how many other movies aren't available online. So I'm starting a list. You can add to it. https://t.co/WUMx8TRFTW — John August (@johnaugust) August 9, 2018 August set criteria for the list : Only English-language films released from 1980 to 2016 that were in the top 100 films of the year in the box of...

The 'Halo' arcade game is playable at every Dave & Buster's

Image
There's a new Halo game out this summer and you don't need an Xbox to play it. Instead, all you have to do is roll up to any Dave & Buster's and start popping quarters into it. Halo: Fireteam Raven is a four-player co-op on-rails arcade shooter developed my Raw Thrills and Play Mechanix, set during the events of the first (and best) game. Fireteam Raven plays out across a 130-inch wide 4K screen. If you're not familiar with Raw Thrills by name, you've definitely seen its games at your local movie theater or Dave & Busters prior. Headed by gaming industry legend Eugene Jarvis who worked at Williams on pinball machines before transitioning to Atari and Midway, Jarvis' company makes high-end arcade cabinets for games based on Batman and Jurassic Park . Before this, he partnered with Housemarque on a Nex Machina cabinet and he revived th...

Many Android devices ship with firmware vulnerabilities, researchers find

Image
Asus, Essential, LG, and ZTE have all vowed to patch security flaws found by mobile security firm Kryptowire, according to Wired . The firm's research was meant to point out that some security meltdowns stem from code written by phone companies to modify Android. Researchers found bugs in the firmware of 10 separate devices carried across the major American carriers, according Wired , which saw an early version of Kryptowire's report. The security lapses could lead to everything from letting an attacker lock someone out of their device, to getting control over their microphone and more — though most of the attacks that the researchers detailed required users to download some sort of malicious app before they could take advantage of the... Twitch nixes Communities, adds tags to improve content discovery

Image
Video game streaming service Twitch launched Communities in February of last year. These were ostensibly hub page for specific games or topics that members could create to help people find content. Now the company will shut these pages down mid-September in favor of a new tagging system. Twitch will also add 10 new categories for streamers to help describe their content for better discovery. Twitch says that it removed Communities for a couple of reasons. For example, fewer than 3 percent of Twitch viewers came through Communities. Also, the company admits that they could be confusing and hard to access when browsing directories. The new system will allow streamers to categorize their pages from a pre-defined set of tags. Some will be auto-generated by Twitch, as well, like genre and specific in-game features. While tags and new categories won't do exactly t...

Spotify might let free users skip all ads

Image
Spotify is testing a new feature in Australia that'll let non-paying users skip ads (both audio and video) as many times as they like. The company tells AdAge that the idea is that users will likely only skip ads they don't care about, so what they do consume will give Spotify feedback on how to better target them. A company executive compared it to Discover Weekly, but for ads. Advertisers won't have to pay for skipped ads. I sort of understand this, but I don't know how much better it will make ads. People are lazy and don't want to have to navigate back to the app just to skip an ad. Spotify says it's only testing the feature for now, but the goal is to launch it globally. As someone who pays for Spotify, this makes me feel a little... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2MC2baa ...

Marvel Studio's 10th anniversary movie festival is IMAX-only

Image
Marvel is going all-out to mark the 10th birthday of its Cinematic Universe, and that includes upgrading the quality of the movies themselves. It's hosting a 10th Anniversary Film Festival between August 30th and September 6th, and you'll have to visit "select" IMAX theaters across North America if you want to join in. To that end, it's promising digital remasters of every movie to take advantage of IMAX's picture and sound quality, including movies that have never been shown in IMAX before. This will be your first chance to watch Iron Man , The Incredible Hulk and Captain America: The First Avenger in the premium format. You can already buy tickets for as many of the movies as you like. The first five days of the festival are focused on showing the movies in order (important if you're new to the MCU). After that, however, it ge...

Google Play warns users it doesn’t carry Fortnite Battle Royale

Image
Google is warning Android users that it doesn't carry Fortnite Battle Royale in the Play Store. If you search for Fortnite in the Play Store, it will return a notice from Google. "Fortnite Battle Royal by Epic Games, Inc is not available on Google Play," the sign says, likely as a clarification to users, as first spotted by 9to5Google . By saying upfront that the Play Store doesn't have Fortnite , Google is attempting to protect unknowing users who might download some malicious clone of the app. Epic Games requires users who want to run Fortnite on Android to download an APK of the beta directly from its site. The decision essentially cuts Google out of potential revenue from app purchases, which would have been a 30 percent cut. Android...
