Get your own HAL-9000 replica with Bluetooth and voice command

Image
Sci-fi fans rejoice: You can now talk to your very own replica of the iconic HAL-9000 computer from Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke's seminal film, 2001: A Space Odyssey . Master Replicas Group has already achieved 358 percent funding on this Indiegogo project , which includes two versions of the iconic device. iOS 12 developer beta points to bezel-less iPad with FaceID

Image
Last year, early iOS leaks gave us a preview of the eventual iPhone X and some details on Apple's HomePod speaker . Now, 9to5Mac points out an icon in the iOS 12 developer beta that seems to show an iPad design with tiny bezels all around and missing the home button. Separately, code for accessibility features shows evidence of FaceID support in an upcoming iPad Pro likely scheduled for release this fall. The image doesn't show an iPhone X-like notch, so presumably new iPads would manage to squeeze a TrueDepth camera into the remaining bezel. With iPad sales remaining flat compared to last year , it seems likely that we'll see new devices soon, and now we have some idea at least of what they'll look like. Astronomy Picture of the Day: Eclipse over the Gulf of Poets

Image
Eclipse over the Gulf of Poets The total phase of the July 27 lunar eclipse lasted for an impressive 103 minutes. That makes it the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century . The Moon passed through the center of Earth's shadow while the Moon was near apogee, the most distant point in its elliptical orbit. From start to finish, the entire duration of totality is covered in this composite view. A dreamlike scene, it includes a sequence of digital camera exposures made every three minutes. The exposures track the totally eclipsed lunar disk, accompanied on that night by bright planet Mars, as it climbs above the seaside village of Tellaro, Italy. In the foreground lies the calm mediteranean Gulf of La Spezia, known to some as the Gulf of Poets . In the 3rd century BCE, heliocentric astronomer Aristarchus also tracked the duration of lunar eclipses, though without the benefit o...

Congress passes data security bill for small businesses

Image
The US government doesn't have the strongest cybersecurity policy right now, but there's at least some progress on that front beyond what's happening at security agencies . The US Senate has passed its version of the NIST Small Business Cybersecurity Act, clearing the way for the bill to become law if and when the President signs it. The bipartisan measure promises smaller com panies a consistent, relevant and universal set of NIST -based guidance and resources for protecting their data against online threats. The House passed its version of the Act in October 2017. It's not certain when the bill might reach the President's desk, since that will depend on how quickly both sides of Congress reconcile their legislation. The soon-to-be law isn't going to render small businesses impervious to attack. Many large companies are still grappli...

Uber and Lyft hoped 'rainy day' fund would relax NYC regulations

Image
Ridesharing companies really, really don't like the thought of New York City capping their services and otherwise instituting new regulations. To that end, they recently tried a drastic measure: making a charity offer in return for concessions. Lyft's Joe Okpaku informed The Verge that his company, Uber and carpooling service Via unsuccessfully proposed a $100 mi llion "hardship fund" that would have compensated individual taxi medallion owners to the tune of "tends of thousands of dollars." Some would get payments immediately, while further payments would take place over the course of five years. In exchange, however, NYC's City Council would have needed to drop its proposed cap and minimum wage requirements -- not surprisingly, the city turned it down as a result. Okpaku characterized the rejection as a "little bit astonish...

Tesla is adding classic Atari games to its cars

Image
Tesla isn't limiting its fun-oriented EV updates to its upcoming party mode . Elon Musk has promised that "some of the best" Atari games will be playable in Tesla cars as part of a version 9.0 software update coming in roughly four weeks. The exec didn't provide a full list of titles, but he indicated that Missile Command , Pole Position and Tempest would ideally be part of the release, which will make them available as Easter eggs . And crucially, you won't just be tapping the screen or twiddling thumbwheels. For Pole Position , you'll use the car's steering wheel to drive in the game. Musk also not-so-subtly hinted that more was in the works, suggesting that game developers should apply to Tesla to make games that use the "center touch screen, phone & car irl." In that regard, you could think of the Atari ports as ...

Apple’s plans to cut apps out of its affiliate program may shut down independent iOS news sites

Image
Today, Apple announced that it plans to remove apps and in-app purchases from its iTunes Affiliate Program by October 1st. The company cites its own editorial teams and discovery features as strong enough alternatives to third-party websites and news operations that have historically made money in part by referring their readers to the App Store. The longstanding affiliate marketing service was a way to receive revenue from Apple that the company took out of its standard 30 percent iTunes and App Store cut, and that revenue provided a much-needed source of revenue for independent news sites and publications that wrote about and linked to mobile apps. As Apple puts it, the affiliate program is unneccesary "with the launch of the new App... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2Kjfdr3 ...

Researchers tap AI for more efficient road maintenance

Image
Potholes are a nuisance pretty much everywhere and the methods traditionally used to keep track of them aren't terribly efficient. Whether it be driving around to visually inspect roads or watching videos of streets to spot and prioritize the repair of pavement damage , strategies typically used by towns and cities require a fair amount of time and labor. But AI could make that process a bit easier and quite a bit faster. One group exploring the use of AI to support the municipal officials in charge of road maintenance has been developing a software syst em that could not only aid in road repairs but also bridge and building maintenance as well. The group, led by John Zelek at the University of Waterloo, has been using road images sourced from Google Street View to develop its system, which automatically analyzes photos of roads to spot potholes , cracks and other...

Apple’s next iPad Pro will have tiny bezels, but no notch

Image
An icon found in iOS 12 developer beta 5 seems to have confirmed key details about Apple's upcoming next-gen iPad Pro: the new tablet will ultra-thin bezels, just like the iPhone X, but no notch. As reported by 9to5Mac , the tiny blue iOS 12 icon shows a tablet with thinner, more uniform border lines and a home row of apps at the bottom. The existing iPad icon does show a home button and a front-facing camera at the top. Last year, an accidental HomePod firmware release revealed the front-facing design of the iPhone X in very similar fashion, so it's likely this icon, though not part of any leak, is a legitimate look at the front-facing design of the next iPad Pro. We've also heard rumors of Apple going with a bezel-less design for its... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2AwownR ...
