In March, YouTube revealed that it was releasing a dark mode for its mobile apps, starting with its iOS version. Now, Android users are beginning to get the feature on their apps. YouTube added a dark mode to its desktop site last year , and the company says that it became one of the most requested features for its apps. 9to5Google reports that the feature began rolling out yesterday, notifying users with a prompt. Add Verizon to the list of tech giants that can't resist the temptation to offer their own virtual private network services. The carrier (and Engadget's parent company) has released a Safe Wi-Fi app for Android that uses the encryption of a VPN to protect you against dodgy WiFi hotspots. Ideally, you won't have to worry about a fake access point intercepting your data traffic at the airport or coffe e shop. The app even blocks ad trackers that can lead to targeted marketing -- yes, the telecom that got in trouble for aggressive ad tracking is now helping you avoid it. There's a recurring fee like with many apps, although the $4 per month you'll pay is a bit of a bargain compared to other services. It looks as though Amazon is thinking about reentering the phone market. During the company's presentation yesterday at the Television Critics Association press tour — in which Amazon released a slew of updates regarding some of its upcoming television projects — Amazon Studio head Jen Salke was asked if the company was working on a new phone, according to TheWrap . She indicated that she's not only seen a prototype with a new interface, but that she has one in her office. YouTube has acknowledged the popularity of vertical video in its mobile apps , and now it's embracing the format on PCs. The streaming behemoth has updated its web player with better support for different aspect ratios. If you're watching a taller-than-usual clip, YouTube will both enlarge the video appropriately and scrap the dreaded black bars. This won't make you forget that you're watching footage originally intended for phones -- it will, however, make the experience slightly less jarring. The change even applies to regular 16:9 videos, taking advantage of the extra blank space to enlarge the picture. You might not rush to click the Theater Mode button quite so quickly as you did in the past. A Kickstarter project called Oddball aims to put a new spin on making music. Comprised of a ball about the size of a lacrosse ball and an accompanying app, the ball behaves as a percussion trigger, making noise whenever it's bounced off a surface. The idea with Oddball is that a sound can be assigned to it, and then that sound is played whenever the ball is bounced. Sensors inside the ball communicate with the app via Bluetooth, and then the sound plays through your phone speakers, headphones, or wherever else you assign it. The ball is pressure sensitive, meaning the harder you bounce it, the more "intense" the sound is.
