Coinbase finds no wrongdoing in Bitcoin Cash insider trading probe

Image
Last December, Coinbase halted trading of Bitcoin Cash just hours after it unexpectedly announced the addition of the cryptocurrency to its platform. The company, which initially said it wouldn't support Bitcoin Cash, a hard fork of Bitcoin, reversed its position, later saying it would add the currency by January 1st, 2018. Surprising many, it then announced access to Bitcoin Cash on December 19th, but the currency had already begun experi encing a price surge in the hours before the announcement, leading many to speculate that Coinbase employees who knew about the addition ahead of time had started buying up Bitcoin Cash in expectation of a price increase once Coinbase officially announced its availability. Accusations of insider trading led Coinbase to launch an investigation into the matter, which has now been wrapped up. A spokesperson told Fortune that the...

Slack buys HipChat in a bid to take on Microsoft

Image
Atlassian and Slack announced today that they're entering a partnership, one that should be beneficial to both as they continue to face competition from Microsoft. As part of the agreement, Atlassian will sell its HipChat and Stride communication products to Slack and will also take a stake in the company. Slack will make payments to Atlassian for its products over the next three years, Bloomberg reports, and both products will be discontinued. Atlassian launched Stride last September as a way to better compete with Slack and the company said that while it had made progress with Stride, the partnership with Slack turned out to be a better option in the end. "We're very proud of what the team has built," Atlassian co-CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes told Bloomberg . "But at the same time, it is a crowded space, and there's a pragmatic option there....

Google bans cryptocurrency mining apps from the Play Store

Image
Google has updated its Play Store developer policies to ban several more categories of apps, including cryptocurrency mining ones and apps with disruptive ads, as reported by Android Police . When it comes to cryptocurrency apps, Google says mining apps are now prohibited, but apps that "remotely manage the mining of cryptocurrency" are still permitted. Apple recently banned apps that mine cryptocurrency , stating that, "the only cryptocurrency mining apps allowed are those that mine outside of the device, like cloud-based mining." Repetitive apps are now prohibited in the Google Play store. These are apps that mimic or provide the same experience as apps that already exist on the platform. Apps can be removed if they copy content from... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2uQvlvm ...

Amazon records another huge quarter thanks to Alexa and the cloud

Image
Amazon's been under quite a bit of stress recently, as it deals with fallout from its facial recognition tech , ongoing privacy concerns with its Echo hardware and its Prime Day not going as well as intended. But with so many businesses under its umbrella, Amazon still raked in plenty of dough to keep the company going. According to its second quarterly report for 2018 , Amazon's net sales increased by 39 percent to $52.9 billion compared to this time last year, which translates to an overall net income of $2.5 billion in just the past few months. This includes sales from advertising, its own hardware products, the Prime Video service, plus sales from Whole Foods stores across the nation. Amazon doesn't typically break out sales by category, but it does seem like the company has been pushing hard on the Alexa side of things in the past few month...

Another solid quarter for Amazon pushes it toward a $1 trillion valuation

Image
Amazon reported earnings for the second quarter of 2018 today, posting an even higher profit than Wall Street analysts estimated thanks in large part to boosts in North American operating income and its highly profitable cloud computing business. Amazon reported earnings per share of $5.07, more than double of analysts' estimation of $2.50. Amazon fell just short of revenue expectations by bringing in $52.9 billion instead of the expected $53.41. Yet Amazon Web Services continues to grow at a rapid pace, posting $6 billion in sales compared to $4.1 billion last year at a growth rate just shy of 50 percent. Last quarter, Amazon released the next-generation Fire TV Edition smart TV, including the new Toshiba 4K TV, as well as the Fire TV... Fortnite for Android might be exclusive to the Galaxy Note 9 at launch

Image
Samsung might be taking its marketing of the Galaxy Note 9 in a different direction than previous Notes: the company is said to be planning a huge, exclusive Fortnite push through a partnership with Epic Games. Both 9to5Google and XDA Developers are reporting that Fortnite's Android port will launch alongside the Note 9 — perhaps even as a pre-bundled application. Samsung might have a 30-day exclusive on the hugely popular battle royale game, according to 9to5Google . Epic Games did not respond to a request for comment. Both sites say that Note 9 buyers will be rewarded with some Fortnite bonus freebies in exchange for preordering the phone, including complimentary V-Bucks, player skins, and more. And yes, apparently somehow Samsung has... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2Aev5vd ...

Slack buys Hipchat with plans to shut it down and migrate users to its chat service

Image
Slack made a surprise announcement today that it's acquired Hipchat, once a primary competitor to its workplace chat service, from enterprise software giant Atlassian. As part of the partnership between Slack and Atlassian, Hipchat will be shutting down and the two companies will work together to migrate all of its users over to Slack. The same goes for Stride, the chat and collaboration successor to Hipchat that Atlassian launched last year. In exchange, Atlassian gets a small stake in the startup , while Slack pays an undisclosed amount over the next three years to fully acquire the HipChat and Stride software stacks and user bases. The partnership comes at a pivotal time for corporate chat software, with Microsoft ramping up... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2LTPBmq ...
