The latest Spike Lee Joint is all about Uber drivers

Image
Uber apparently has a lot of money to fight an ongoing public relations battle. The beleaguered ride-sharing company has enlisted... wait, what? Spike Lee has directed and produced five new short films (also called commercials) for Uber called, wait for it, Da Republic of Brooklyn . The five films are subtitled for Uber drivers in Brooklyn (that Uber paid for their participation), including an aspiring actress, and art restorationist, a serial entrepreneur, a "passionate carer" for animals and a hairstylist (and mother of two). The auteur apparently chose the featured folks by himself out of thousands of Uber non-employees in the area. "I was attracted to this project because I know a lot of people who drive on the Uber platform and it gives them the flexibility they need to pursue their dreams," wrote Lee in a statement. "That's how w...

SEC is reportedly investigating how Facebook disclosed data scandal

Image
Earlier this month, news emerged that the Securities and Exchange Commission had started its own probe into Facebook. Today, Sources told The Wall Street Journal that the SEC is specifically looking into whether the social media giant should have informed shareholders when it learned back in 2015 that Cambridge Analytica had improperly acquired data of 86 million users from researcher Aleks andr Kogan the year before. The SEC's probe is one of several simultaneous investigations , along with the DOJ, FTC and FBI, into Facebook's handling of user data. Given its role governing what incidents companies must disclose to shareholders, the former commission is exploring whether the Cambridge Analytica event merited mention to Facebook's investors. Back in 2015, the company's officials didn't think so, a source told The Wall Street Journal : The data s...

The Wirecutter's best deals: A 500GB Samsung SSD, and more

This post was done in partnership with Wirecutter . When readers choose to buy Wirecutter's independently chosen editorial picks, it may earn affiliate commissions that support its work. Read their continuously updated list of deals here . Samsung 860 Evo 500 GB SSD Street price: $120; deal price: $100 While we've seen multiple recent promo code deals on this SSD that dropped it near $100 and even one extremely short-lived deal that saw it dip a few dollars below the century mark, this is still a really good price. The street price of this drive has dropped since its release, as is the usual for SSDs, but it's rare to ever see it cheaper and the price compares favorably to that of our top pick, the Crucial MX500. The Samsung 860 Evo is our runner-up pick in our guide to the best SSD . Andrew Cunningham, comparing it to our top pick, wrote, ...

Justice Department appeals approval of Time Warner-AT&T merger

Image
Just when we thought the AT&T--Time Warner merger was finally a done deal when a judge ruled in its favor last month, it seems not everyone will accept it. The Justice Department is reportedly set to appeal the approval, according to a court document spotted by CNBC . Big News: DOJ appeals AT&T, Time Warner decision. Deal already closed back in June but can be unwound if DOJ wins on appeal. #antitrust pic.twitter.com/wiKJcy1uzO — Victoria Graham (@vgraham27) July 12, 2018 Developing... Marketers collected personal info from closed Facebook groups

Image
It looks like Facebook has another privacy issue on its hands, this time over its closed groups. CNBC reports that Andrea Downing, a moderator of a closed Facebook group, discovered that a Chrome extension called Grouply.io let her download names, employers, locations, email addresses and other info on the group's 9,000 members. The finding was especially troubling given that the group is for women who a have gene associated with a greater risk of developing breast cancer, medical information many don't want to share widely outside of the group. Downing consulted a security researcher about the discovery who found that closed Facebook groups had a privacy loophole allowing Grouply.io to gain access to their information. The researcher, Fred Trotter, was also able to access information for Downing's group and others manually. He reported the issue to Face...

Justice Department appeals ruling in attempt to block massive AT&T–Time Warner merger

Image
The Justice Department will appeal a judge's decision that allowed the merger between AT&T and Time Warner. In court records released today , the agency said it plans to appeal the lower court's ruling to the DC Circuit court of Appeals. Last month's decision against the Justice Department was a devastating rebuke of the Trump administration's antitrust enforcement team, and allowed for the creation of a new telecom behemoth. The department previously said it would allow the merger to move ahead as it considered whether to appeal the ruling. The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The FCC is changing up the country’s emergency alert system to prevent another Hawaii incident

Image
The FCC announced today that it'll bolster the country's Emergency Alert System to prevent unexpected false alarms, like the one that happened in Hawaii earlier this year. State and local officials will now be able to conduct "live code" tests that'll use the same alert codes and processes that would be required in an actual emergency. The idea is that officials will better learn the system while the public will get used to responding to alerts and know what to expect. Everyone in the area will get a test message, like a real alert. The agency also says that public service announcements about the Emergency Alert System will now be able to use the same alert sounds as an actual emergency. (The alerts will include a disclaimer about what's... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2uqj9Az ...

Unlimited data plans are a mess: here’s how to pick the best one

Image
Above Unlimited. Unlimited &More. Unlimited &More Premium. These are the names of new mobile data plans introduced in just the last month by Verizon and AT&T. In an era without net neutrality , we've drifted far, far away from the days when "unlimited data" was a simple concept that meant you could use your smartphone to its full capabilities without any handcuffs or confusing limitations. Carriers will tell you that the fundamental, underlying promise of unlimited data remains true in 2018: you can use your smartphone as much as you want without overage charges or being cut off once you've surpassed a specific threshold. And yes, that's true. Consumers are generally in a better place now than they were a few years ago, back when... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts https://ift.tt/2Kfz5QW ...
