A closer look at RED's audacious Hydrogen One phone

Image
In a van sitting between the high school from Pretty Little Liars and the Stars Hollow gazebo from Gilmore Girls , RED founder Jim Jannard takes out his smartphone — the Hydrogen One — and starts whipping through demos with me. We're at AT&T's Shape entertainment conference at Warner Brothers Studios and this might be the most surreal hands-on experience I've ever had with a phone. Then again, this might be the most surreal smartphone I've ever used. Companies have tried building modular smartphones, and have met varying degrees of success — the LG G5 and its "friends" utterly flopped while Motorola continues to push its various Mods . Companies also have tried to build smartphones with eye-popping 3D displays, and they've been abject failures. Remember Amazon's Fire Phone ? No one has tried to squeeze both of those gimmicks in...

Google quietly killed its Android tablet web page

Image
Next time you visit Google's official Android website , you might notice a tiny but important change. The tablet section, which used to occupy the space between "wear" and "TV" in the menu, no longer exists. Google has quietly pulled down the page that used to highlight tablet-specific apps, as well as a handful of prominent models, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 . Android Police noticed the missing section on June 1st and pointed out that it still existed the day before -- the website's snapshot for May 31st on Internet Archive clearly shows that the tablet page is still there. Does this mean Google is giving up on Android tablets to focus more on its other devices, like Chromebooks ? We asked the big G what its official reason is, and we're still waiting to hear back. But it's no secret that iPads still dominate the field even...

Trump nominates Geoffrey Starks as FCC Commissioner

Image
It's now clear who will (likely) take FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn's seat now that she's stepping down . President Trump has signaled his intent to nominate Geoffrey Starks to fulfill the remainder of a five-year Commissioner term that began on June 30th, 2017, when Clyburn's stint officially ended. The transition will take place if and when the Senate con firms his appointment, although there's a good chance of that happening when Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has backed the nomination. Just how this will shape the FCC's decisions remains murky, though. Starks has been an assistant bureau chief at the FCC enforcement division for the past three years, and before then was a senior counsel for the Justice Department. He's the classic heads-down regulator, then. However, that's about all people know. It's not yet ce...

Spotify hip-hop programming head leaves for YouTube

Image
YouTube's latest streaming music initiative may be off to a rough start , but it's determined to step up its game. The service has confirmed months-long rumors that it hired Spotify's hip-hop programming head Tuma Basa (pictured at left) to become its urban music director. The music industry veteran will use his " deep knowledge" to help connect "artists and fans," according to YouTube's music lead Lyor Cohen (shown at right). Basa is best known for curating Spotify's legendary RapCaviar playlist, both fueling its popularity (over 9 million followers to date) and providing exposure to artists. YouTube is clearly hoping for a similar effect, whether it's with its recently launched YouTube Music service or its videos. If YouTube breaks a hot new rap star or otherwise becomes extra-relevant to the urban music community, y...

Denver Uber driver kills passenger in alleged self-defense incident

Image
An Uber driver in Denver has been arrested for an investigation into first-degree murder charges after he killed his passenger in the early morning on June 1st. Michael Hancock told a witness that he shot his customer, Hyun Kim, several times in self-defense after being attacked while on the highway. Uber said it couldn't provide details regarding the investigation, but noted that it was assisting police and had revoked Ha ncock's access to its driver app. Whether or not Hancock's claims are accurate, he was violating Uber's policies by carrying a gun in the first place. Uber forbids both drivers and passengers from carrying firearms in most states (with exceptions for states that bar these restrictions), and the company has confirmed that its no-gun stance applies in Colorado. It's not certain that Hancock will face charges, and Uber'...

Hinge will no longer require you to log in via Facebook

Image
Dating app Hinge is about to make a major change: it's dropping its requirement that users to login to with Facebook. Techcrunch reports that the app will still keep the ability for users to log in with the social network, but it's also adding the ability for users to use a phone number to log in. Launched in 2013 , Hinge used user Facebook connections to match potential couples and has positioned itself as a way for people to meet long-term partners. According to Techcrunch , CEO Justin McLeod says that his users have been requesting an additional login option. The change will go out to Android users on Monday, June 5th, and to iOS users on Tuesday, June 12th. While Hinge has relied on Facebook connections to match up potential... macOS leak hints at dark mode and desktop News app

Image
Apple has inadvertently spoiled some of WWDC 2018's mysteries in advance. Well-known developer Steve Troughton-Smith has spotted a hidden video on the Mac App Store showing off what looks like a new version of macOS with a system-wide dark mode -- not just the menu bar and dock as you see today. There's no guarantee this would translate to iOS, but it would be helpful for both late-night computing sessions and media creators who find bright graphics distracting. This wouldn't be the only addition, either. The same video also shows a conspicuous News icon in the dock, revealing that Apple is prepping a desktop version of the app. And the very fact that there's a Mac App Store video speaks volumes -- you can't currently see video previews in the store, suggesting that Apple is giving the portal an iOS 11-style overhaul. Apple is expected to ...
