How to pick the best camera for vlogging in 2018

Image
oh weIf you want to get started shooting video, you can always use your phone. But if you want to get a little more serious, what’s the next place to go? To find out, we asked Sara Dietschy , who’s posted close to 400 tech videos, documentaries, and more to her YouTube channel over the past few years, including quite a few videos giving advice on what gear to buy. Dietschy is a fan of Sony’s cameras and said that a good first step up would be Sony’s RX100 V point-and-shoot, which offers great slow-mo footage and records 4K. But the point-and-shoot isn’t flexible when it comes to audio, so after that, you might want to move to something closer to her own rig: an A7S II with a Rode VideoMic Pro. You could also take a look at Panasonic’s... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2q9yXoW"

Louis Vuitton made a $370 luggage tracker

Image
In the past year, Louis Vuitton has been dipping its toes into fashion tech, starting with introducing its $2,450 Tambour Horizon smartwatch last summer . Now, it’s released something a bit more accessible (but still ridiculous) in price: a $370 luggage tracker called the Louis Vuitton Echo. The device lets you track your suitcase via the LV Pass app, available on both Android and iOS, and it comes with a three-year service subscription to Sigfox. The Sigfox subscription allows you to the track your luggage at various airports globally . Once you land, the app notifies you of the position of your luggage and whether it was opened during the trip. The LV Echo is meant to work with the luxury brand’s Horizon line of suitcases, and it has a... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2ElVaFt"

OnePlus might launch its first wireless earbuds soon

Image
It looks like OnePlus has a pair of wireless earbuds in the works. As spotted by Nashville Chatter , a listing on the Bluetooth certification site reveals the existence of a product called the OnePlus Bullets Wireless. Since OnePlus already has two pairs of wired earbuds called the Bullets, it’s pretty clear what this product is going to be. The only big question the name leaves is whether they’ll be fully wireless or still include a wire that wraps around the neck. OnePlus has already gone on record saying it’ll include a headphone jack on its next phone, so wireless headphones aren’t really a necessity for the company. But it’s not a surprising launch either since the headphone industry is moving in this direction, and there are plenty... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2EmcTwz"

Apple has an iPad gesture dilemma

Image
At its launch back in 2010, the iPad was heavily criticized for being a big iPhone. iOS 11 and the iPad Pro proved that wasn’t the case. Things further diverged with the introduction of the iPhone X, which has led to some confusion for anyone who regularly uses an iPad. I’ve been using an iPhone X and iPad Pro together for nearly six months now, and I often feel lost when moving back and forth between the devices — one with a physical home button, the other with webOS-like gestures. The result is a vastly different user experience, even though they run the same version of iOS on large rectangles of glass. Now, Apple is rumored to be ditching the home button on the iPad Pro in favor of Face ID. It’s a move that makes sense, and it will... Microsoft adds ransomware protection and file restore to OneDrive cloud storage

Image
Microsoft is introducing a new OneDrive feature this week that will make it easier to recover from ransomware attacks. Files Restore is making its way over from OneDrive for Business to personal OneDrive accounts. The catch is you’ll need an Office 365 subscription to get access to the new Files Restore feature. OneDrive users can now use it to simply restore files from any point in time within the last 30 days. If you accidentally delete a file you’ll be able to restore it, or if you make some bad changes and want to roll back to an earlier copy. Microsoft is marketing the Files Restore feature as a good way to protect against ransomware attacks that lock files on a local PC, and often try to delete copies that are stored in synced... MIT has a new tool to combat online harassment: your friends

Image
In light of Facebook, Twitter, Discord, and other social media platforms’ struggles to combat online harassment, MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory has developed a new tool that might help. It proposes that instead of relying on platforms’ moderators, people start relying on their friends. The tool is called Squadbox, and it “friend-sources” for moderators to filter messages and support people who are being harassed online. So a blogger who wants to have a public email address to receive tips, but also wants to avoid receiving hate mail from strangers, can set up a Squadbox account, and use two of her co-workers as moderators, MIT scientists propose. Her “squad” of two will divvy up the work between themselves... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2GBEdNe"

Meet Fribo, a robot built for lonely young people

Image
The number of people living alone is on the rise in the US and other developed nations, and it’s definitely not a good thing. Loneliness and isolation are bad for your health , physically and mentally, so it’s in societies’ interests to think about how we can bring people together. Many blame technology for this fragmentation, but could it also help? Researchers from Korea think so, and they have developed a prototype robot named Fribo that encourages young people to text and call one another. Unlike many other robots built for the home, Fribo is not intended to be social itself, but to instead foster socializing in others. Fribos are intended to be distributed in a group of friends’ houses, creating what researchers call a “virtual... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2GUEgTP"

Unsplash, tech companies’ favorite stock imaging site, now has an iOS app

Image
Unsplash, the apparent stock image database of choice for Silicon Valley companies, is launching an iOS app for creators and hobbyists to browse through catalogs of high quality photos to use in a creative project or any other personal use. Today’s launch is Unsplash’s third foray into apps — it launched a macOS app last year solely designed for rotating wallpapers on a Mac computer, and a similar app for the Apple TV in 2016. The new mobile app is optimized to be best used with an iPad — users can drag photos they like to the lower left corner to download the image, or use multi-screen mode to drop the picture into a project file they’re working on. Unsplash fills its database with stock images from a community of photographers willing... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2GA4KXd"

Spotify claims it actually had a better Weeknd than Apple Music

Image
Yesterday, The Verge reported that The Weeknd’s latest album, My Dear Melancholy, had a very strong debut on Apple Music, pulling in 26 million streams in the first 24 hours. The lead single, “Call Out My Name” pulled in an additional 6 million streams, surpassing the 3.5 million streams the single pulled in on Spotify during the same period, according to The Weeknd’s label, Republic Records. Obviously that would be a huge win for Apple Music given that it has around 120 million less users than Spotify, didn’t have two exclusive music videos from the project, and didn’t have The Weeknd promoting its service. But there’s a twist! Spotify says the numbers it initially gave Republic Records were in fact wrong. “Call Out My Name” was... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2q4p6lc"

Mark Zuckerberg says he is a ‘power user of the internet’

Image
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg held a call with reporters today to answer questions about the sweeping changes the company made to its third-party app developer platform, as well as the revelation that as many as 87 million users — not 50 million as previously thought — may have had their personal data misused by Cambridge Analytica . Slate’s Will Oremus asked whether the chief executive himself would have used apps like the one designed by Cambridge psychology professor Aleksandr Kogan, called “thisisyourdigitallife,” that siphoned the data of around 270,000 users and all of their friends, which Kogan then packaged and sold. The CEO’s answer was candid and will likely enter the pantheon of iconic Zuck quotes, which also includes his... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "https://ift.tt/2GXADMI"
