Crypto.com is not for sale

Image
It’s a seller’s market for domains suggestive of Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies, and blockchains. The domain name Tokens.com sold for $500,000 in February. Cryptoworld.com sold for $195,000 in January. Eth.com sold for $2 million at the end of 2017. Blockchain.us wants $3.45 million, and Ethereum.com is asking for $10 million. In this climate, a domain like Crypto.com is likely worth millions of dollars. But Matt Blaze, who has owned it since 1993, isn’t selling. “No, my domain name isn’t for sale. Yes, I mean it. Yes, I’ve probably already muted you,” he tweeted in September. For anyone else trying to contact me for this reason, don't bother. Not for sale. https://t.co/S8yKT4J5IF — matt blaze (@mattblaze) January 5, 2018 Blaze is an... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "http://ift.tt/2GpItMv"

Smartphone notches are now being teased like a big new feature

Image
Regardless of how you feel about the notch, just about every phone manufacturer has decided they’re cool — apparently even to the point of highlighting the design flair in advertisements. Oppo has started teasing its forthcoming F7 smartphone that’s headed for India, and all of its teasers make a point of drawing attention to its cutout along the top edge. This shouldn’t be too surprising. At Mobile World Congress last month, iPhone X clones that mimicked Apple’s design where everywhere . Companies made a point of talking about them during press conferences, using it as a way to make their phones look modern and advanced. Oppo has taken things to the logical next step by actively teasing the inclusion of a notch on its new phone. Rather... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "http://ift.tt/2GpAqzk"

Waymo’s fully driverless minivans are already putting people to sleep

Image
Recently, Waymo began inviting members of its Early Rider program in Phoenix to take trips in its fully driverless minivans. These are normal people who signed up back in 2017 to serve as guinea pigs for the Google spinoff’s experiments in self-driving transportation. And, as you can see in this new video released Tuesday, the experience is equal parts thrilling and boring. In the video, the passengers giggle nervously at the sight of an empty driver’s seat, wondering aloud whether passersby are also slightly freaked out, and making casual references to “the future.” Then, very quickly, as is common among most ride-hailing passengers, they start to zone out. They look at their phones, they yawn, and one even falls asleep. When they... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "http://ift.tt/2IpBJyC"

Amazon’s Cloud Cam now has a web interface and more Alexa commands

Image
Amazon has announced new functionalities for its home security camera Cloud Cam , as well as updates to both the Echo Show and Echo Spot, as reported by Android Police . You can now check Cloud Cam’s live view from a computer, where before it was only available via the app. Also, you can use the command, “Alexa, turn on [camera name]” to turn on your Cloud Cam. These are both small but incredibly useful additions. Many other security cameras already offer the ability to view live footage online, and it seems odd that Cloud Cam launched with Alexa commands to let you switch between various rooms , but not one to simply turn it on. Four months after the device’s release, now you can. The changelog from Amazon also notes a couple updates to... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "http://ift.tt/2HvvwQC"

A chatbot can now offer you protection against volatile airline prices

Image
A chatbot can now offer you protection against volatile airline prices. It’s the same bot, DoNotPay, that helped users protest parking tickets and even sue Equifax for small sums of money. Joshua Browder, a junior at Stanford University, designed the new service on the bot in a few months, after experiencing rapidly fluctuating airline prices when flying to California during the wildfires last year . “It annoyed me that every single flight, I could be paying sometimes double or even triple the person next to me in the same type of seat,” he told The Verge . Browder first used the service himself and then tested it among his friends in a closed beta. He claims that the average amount saved among the beta testers is $450 a year, though it’s... MoviePass CEO formally apologizes for controversial location-tracking comments

Image
MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe has issued an open letter apologizing for the comments he made about tracking customers’ locations earlier this month . “First and foremost, I apologize for these comments and the concern they caused. At MoviePass, we take customer privacy extremely seriously,” Lowe wrote. The letter was published on the MoviePass website and clarifies that the app currently uses standard location services on an “opt-in” basis. Lowe said MoviePass would only identify a member’s location which happens when a user requests a search for nearby theaters or when a member requests to check in at a theater. Lowe made the initial comments, which sparked the outcry at the Entertainment Finance Forum earlier in March, saying, “We watch how... Microsoft received 238 discrimination and harrassment complaints since 2010

Image
Female Microsoft employees filed 238 internal complaints about gender discrimination or sexual harassment between 2010 and 2016, according to documents recently made public in an ongoing court case . Compiled by Reuters , the documents show a string of internal complaints that plaintiffs allege are the results of persistent pay discrimination issues. Microsoft’s internal review found that only one of the gender discrimination cases had merit and was “founded.” Microsoft maintains that there is no larger pattern of discrimination, and it’s difficult to say how that number compares to competitors. (Microsoft employs over 115,000 people worldwide.) The class of plaintiffs has yet to be certified, and it’s still unclear whether the plaintiffs’...
