Samsung just announced the Galaxy S9, and now wireless carriers are following up with how much they’re going to charge for the new phone. In general, you’re looking at around $800 for the S9 and around $900 for the S9 Plus. But naturally, pricing couldn’t possibly be that simple, especially for a major new release where carriers are eager to incentivize their customers to buy one. Here are the details we have so far — we’ll be updating with more info as it comes out. In all cases, preorders start March 2nd and sales start March 16th: AT&T Buy it outright: S9 for $790.20; S9 Plus for $915. Monthly installments: $26.34 per month for 30 months for the S9; $30.50 per month for 30 months for the S9 Plus. Those come to the same prices as... Yes, the Samsung Galaxy S9 has a headphone jack

Samsung officially announced the Galaxy S9 today, and yes, as indicated by previously leaked images , there is a headphone jack. While many companies have opted out of including a headphone jack — the iPhone X, Pixel 2, and Huawei Mate 10 Pro — some, like Samsung, have continued to include the headphone jack and be... just fine. Sure, Samsung could have readily ditched the 3.5mm connector, but why? As said before, wireless audio is fine, not great. No one is asking for headphone jacks to be removed, and, “ dongles are stupid, especially when they require other dongles ,” as we’ve pointed out here at The Verge many times. The thing is, headphone jacks work, period, and they’re extremely useful. Should we live without the headphone jack on... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "http://ift.tt/2HMh7k7"

Samsung's updated DeX desktop experience uses the S9 as a trackpad

When it launched last year, Samsung's first DeX dock was the latest in a long line of attempts to blur the line between phones and traditional PCs. And you know what? It worked surprisingly well, even though the value for most people wasn't particularly clear. That didn't stop Samsung from trying again, though: the company unveiled a new version of it's DeX hardware alongside the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, and it's much different from the dock we got last year. In its closed form, the original DeX dock sort of resembled an extra-chunky hockey puck, and the sliding mechanism that allowed a phone to fit was quite clever. That's gone. Instead, this year's DeX Pad looks like a shrunken Sega Genesis that the phone is meant to rest on top of. It seems like a step backward in design until you realize that Samsung wanted the phone's touchscreen as close as possible to the surface it's resting on so you can use it as a trackpad. This isn't the first tim...

Huawei announced its first 5G chip this morning at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which will allow the company’s mobile devices to access the next generation of cellular networks, 5G. The company claims that its Huawei Balong 5G01 chip is the first to support the new 3GPP standard for 5G networks, and that it should be able to download data at 2.3Gbps. Given the apparent size of the chip, it’s likely that this will show up in mobile hotspots and not phones. Huawei CEO Richard Yu says that his company has invested $600 million in the network technology, which will likely be used by everything from self-driving cars to mobile devices to smart homes. Huawei also manufactures network equipment and says that it will be the... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "http://ift.tt/2ETHQJA"

Google has been trying to re-engineer Android so it works better on lower-end devices. While Google has been attempting this for nearly four years with its Android One effort , the search giant rebranded with an Android Oreo “Go edition” for low-end phones back in December. Android Go is designed to run better on phones with 512MB or 1GB of RAM, thanks to OS tweaks and “Go” versions of popular Google apps. This week at Mobile World Congress, we’re starting to see the first Android Go handsets. The Nokia 1 is one of the first, and it’s designed to be an entry-level smartphone for a number of emerging markets. The Nokia 1 specs are minimal, and it runs on a 1.1GHz MediaTek processor, 1GB of RAM, and just 8GB of storage. It’s a small and... The Nokia 8 Sirocco is a curved glass Android flagship with no headphone jack

HMD Global, the Finnish company that licensed the rights to produce Nokia phones, first revealed a Nokia-branded Android flagship back in August . At Mobile World Congress today, HMD is launching the Nokia 8 Sirocco, an upgraded variant that comes with some surprising design changes. HMD has opted for glass on 95 percent of the Nokia 8 Sirocco, with a tiny stainless-steel chassis than runs along the sides. The result looks rather impressive, and the fingerprint reader has been moved to the rear to reduce the bezels at the front. The entire phone is curved towards wedge-like points at the edges, with a design that hides the usual ugly antenna lines. It feels small, light, and thin as a result of these changes, although the chamfered edges... Continue reading… via The Verge - Tech Posts "http://ift.tt/2CiYYuK"

HMD brought a Nokia phone for all tastes to this year's MWC. Just as some people might want a retro feature phone or an entry-level smartphone, others want the best that money can buy. HMD's latest offering to these flagship fiends is the Nokia 8 Sirocco, which is pitched as a special edition of the Nokia 8 that launched last summer. Make no mistake, this isn't merely the same phone in a new funky color. It sports a completely overhauled design consisting almost entirely of glass. If it looks so different, why bother referring to it as a special edition and simply call it a new phone altogether? Well, HMD probably wanted to be clear that, in some ways, this is still the Nokia 8. (If you're interested, there was special Sirocco edition of the Nokia 8800 way back when, which is where the company got the name from.) Yes, it's still running Android (8.0 Oreo), and inside you'll find the same octa-core Snapdragon 835 chip, 6GB of RAM and 128 gigs of storage. But ...

Generating hype around the Nokia brand with retro-inspired feature phones is all well and good, but that doesn't necessarily result in people opening their wallets. And to best cash in on any interest, you need a little something for everyone. To that end, HMD Global has announced a number of new Android smartphones at MWC beyond its pricey flagship. There's the Nokia 1, the company's cheapest entry-level device to date; the second-gen Nokia 6, which is going global after debuting in China last month and the Nokia 7 Plus, a bigger version of the China-exclusive 7, which was released last fall. The Nokia 8110 Reloaded is HMD's latest retro feature phone

Many companies descend on the annual Mobile World Congress event to plug their first smartphone launches of the year. It's an established routine, but HMD Global undeniably stole the show in 2017 with, of all things, a new feature phone. Flexing its newly-acquired license to the Nokia brand, HMD put on a marketing masterclass by announcing a re-release of the iconic Nokia 3310 . This year, it's attempting a similar trick, preying on '90s nostalgia with the new Nokia 8110 Reloaded. The 8110 was de rigueur when it launched two decades ago, but if the late '90s are a little hazy, you might best remember the phone for its recurring cameo in 1999 sci-fi classic, The Matrix . Quick tangent: HMD's use of 'Reloaded' is kinda clumsy here, since it was Samsung that created a weird, futuristic phone specifically as a promotional tie-in to the Matrix sequel of the same name. Also, sorry to burst your bubble this early, but the new 8110 doesn't have a spring-...
